A female koala bear crawled into the wheel arch of an automobile last weekend while it had been parked in Adelaide, in south Australia and lived to tell the tale. For nearly ten miles, the marsupial hung on, and it wasn’t until the driver of the vehicle heard the panicky cries from the little one that she realized the animal had been trapped.

According to the Global News, rescuer Jane Brister from the Fauna Rescue stated she could smell the koala’s burnt fur. The wheel had to be removed from the vehicle to free the animal.

“She was crying a little bit, she was a little bit shaken, she was certainly in shock but I rushed her straight to the vet,” Brister said.

The koala was not injured and covered in oil, but it was determined she had been a lactating mother and her infant (joey) was missing. Rescuers searched the entire area but were unable to locate the baby. After a week of rest, the mom was released back into the wild.

“After everything she’s been through, she’s had so much stress and trauma, to see her just toddle off and up the tree, and currently she’s found the biggest fork in the tree, she’s snuggled up, she’s fast asleep,” Brister said.

There are fewer than 100,000 koalas in Australia left in the wild, and they are classified as a “vulnerable” species.

Koalas are known to search out strange places to hide and sleep. This choice may not have been the koala rescuers nicknamed Kellie best decision.

Stay safe little one.
