In a recently released advertisement for an Australian retail company Myer, pop singer Katy Perry is seen telling her little dog Nugget to chase koalas – garnering the ire of animal advocates and slamming her for promoting animal cruelty. The advertisement features Perry’s tiny dog Nugget dragging her as she examines a Myer sign. When Perry informs viewers they can enroll in a competition to win tickets for her upcoming Witness tour, she then orders Nugget to lead her away and says:

“Let’s go chase some koalas Nugget!’

And so the litany of complaints about animal cruelty suggestions was launched – and it turned into a social media frenzy after being slammed by Queensland wildlife veterinarian Claire Madden who called the action of Perry and Myer “inappropriate on so many levels.” According to Courier Mail, Madden called Perry out on social media:

“Perry is a role model to so many young people, and this just destroys all the good work we do to try and encourage people not to let their dogs come into contact with koalas.

“Katy Perry, I challenge you to come and spend a day with me (a wildlife vet) and learn first hand why your comment should NOT be streamed across the nation. Koalas attacked by dogs is one of their biggest threats and primary reasons for presenting to wildlife hospitals across Australia.”

Myer has since announced they are removing Perry’s comment from the commercial. Veterinarians have reported 110 koalas are attacked and killed by dogs in Queensland every year.

  1. You would think an Australian company would have more sense than to air an advertisement like this. Let’s not blame it all on Katy Perry. She most likely thought it was like us saying to our dogs, lets go chase some squirrels.

  2. Even though she never should have said it, I think a koala could kill her dog, so I wouldnt advise her dog to attack anything.

  3. Another entitled celebrity that knows nothing of the real world and what their words actually mean when they speak. Why would she add chase some koalas without knowing that dogs are a problem for koalas?

  4. Yep, a superstar whose ego supersedes common sense. I am not a fan and now I know why. She needs a massive wake up call. Teenybopper brain.
