A Jacksonville man has been charged with animal cruelty after a puppy was found covered in blood inside of a box outside of an Eastside home on Friday. Keyunon Smith, 23, has been arrested. According to authorities the puppy was a victim of extreme cruelty, and when found was bloody, appeared malnourished, had lumps on its head and suffered from a broken jaw.
According to News4Jax, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office found the room where the puppy had previously been kept and reported there was blood all over the walls and the floor. Police say Smith’s girlfriend called police to report the puppy had been abused; it is not known if she will be charged with animal cruelty. The couple have denied the charges, and told police they did not know how the dog was injured.
Investigators reviewed a surveillance camera mounted on a neighbor’s home, and in one of the videos, a man matching Smith’s description was spotted going in and out of the room where the dog had been kept. The room was nearly empty, and there were no objects in the room that could have injured the dog.
Neighbors reported they had witnessed the puppy playing inside of the fenced yard, but it had only been there less than two weeks. There have been no updates on the pup’s condition.
This is a developing story.
