In Moncks Corner, South Carolina, owners have been abandoning their pets to go on vacation. For the past few weeks the Berkeley Animal Center has seen an influx of abandoned cats and dogs at its gates dropped off at night and non-business hours.

Live5News spoke to Berkeley Animal Center’s spokesperson, Hannah Moldenhauer, who expressed her concern for all the cats and dogs being left behind – including the pets coming in that are pregnant.

“This is not a place where people can board their animals,” Moldenhauer said. “We’ve even had people who have called over the phone and said we want to drop off our animal, we’re going on vacation for a few weeks and we don’t really want our pet anymore. Well, you shouldn’t have gotten a pet in the first place.”

In recent weeks, the pet population in the shelter has increased to 80 dogs; the normal capacity is 69 dogs and 51 cats. The shelter is taking in five new pets a day. To help the animals find new homes, adoption fees have been discounted. For cats over two years old, there is no fee; under the age of two, cats can be adopted for $10. Dogs over the age of two are also able to be adopted for $10; under the age of two are $15.

The shelter is also asking the community to volunteer and foster some of the pets as well as send in donations. And if you’re not interested in finding a dog or a cat for a lifelong pal, there are also rabbits who need homes.

The center is hoping to install a surveillance camera system. It is illegal to abandon a pet by just tying them to the gate or dropping them off on the side of the road during off-hours. Come on – you irresponsible pet parents – don’t get a dog or a cat if you think that going on vacation is a reason to abandon your loyal pal.

The center does take animal surrenders, however, the owner must schedule an appointment to drop the pet off to prevent overcrowding.

  1. What a cruel, insensitive, unkind, uncompassionate, cold hearted, inhuman and selfish world we live in! Isn’t humanity suppose to be evolving into a kinder more compassionate place where we do better? What has happened to humanity? We are NOT advancing and we will crash and burn as a result! This is so painful to read and there is not a thing I can do help these precious souls! GOD HELP US

  2. I HATE PEOPLE AND THIS IS THE REASON WHY!!!!! May your inconsideration, lack of responsibility and cruelty come back at you in spades – you deserve the absolute worst – and your vacation turn into a nightmare.

  3. Who in the hell even thinks of throwing away your dog or cat so you can go on vacation? My God, the absurdity of it boggles my mind. This throw away mentality has to stop. The ONLY way I’m going on vacation is if my pet sitter is available to take care of my babies. If she’s busy and can’t do it, then I stay home.

  4. This me, me, culture we live in just shows that being selfish and uncaring about anything that requires work, is so easy to dispose of. The over breeding of both dogs and cats has to have better regulations and controls either by each state or the federal government. Stiff fines for backyard breeders as well as those who are ‘apartment’ breeders. Crackdown on these people. To drop your dog/cat off at a shelter because you are going on vacation is despicable and if the owners are found, they should be in jail and put on a federal registry that they can never own any animal again.

  5. I don’t go on vacation. At most I take weekend trips, and only when there is a family member home with the furbabies. I’d rather spend my time with my four-legged babies than spend money taking a trip.

  6. I hope anyone that does this so they can go on vacation has the WORST vacation anyone could experience. How someone lives with their selfish selves is beyond me!

  7. That is just heartwrenching how a person can do that. Im dumbfounded. I’d give my life for my pets they are my world and mean everything to me. So sad….hope these sweet innocent babies find new loving forever home.

  8. I Guess that this Stupid Family don’t know it that your supposed to take your Dogs on Vacation with YOU. Karma will get you for doing this.

  9. I really hope the shelter will get some surveillance cameras ones that can id them as well as some in the parking area so they can see their license plate. They to punish these people and have a record of them never to be able to adopt a pet ever again. I hope some one there will campaign to raise funds for these cameras. These pos should never be able to own pets if they are just going to discard them like trash. If you cant take care of pet and provide care while you go on vacation don’t get one! Owning a pet takes responsibility and commitment to that animal.

  10. You guys that comment here are the rare people that get me. It is a cruel and insensitive world to animals. Society for the most part is abusive towards animals OR does NOT want to say or do anything about it…so they look the other way. I don’t know how people with caring hearts can stay silent. This is outrageous how they are discarding pets like they were dropping off old clothes in a bin at the good will. Don’t even have the decency to bring them in to an employee during working hours, which would be bad enough. But anything could happen to these animals when there is no-one there to receive them. INHUMANE disgusting state of affairs. Keep on speaking out , my fellow animal activists, we can not let the cruelty overwhelm or defeat us. Much love to those who care about a kinder world to animals. …and to the others, you are not worthy of the ground on which you walk…
