Hurricane Harvey continues to barrel towards the Texas Gulf Coast and the National Hurricane Advisory Service has categorized the mammoth storm at a 3, with sustained winds of 125 mph. Animal shelters in the areas which are expected to take a hit have been scrambling to ensure that the pets in their care are safe.

On Friday afternoon, San Antonio Pets Alive notified Facebook fans that the shelter needs help:

Hurricane Harvey has been upgraded to a Category 3 storm. San Antonio is preparing for an influx of people and pets. SAPA! steps up every day to save the most vulnerable in the City Shelter. We are anticipating a large volume of dogs ending up at the shelter in need of us to immediately save their lives. Please foster, donate and spread the word that San Antonio pets need your help NOW.

As did the SPCA of Texas:

Hurricane Harvey Evacuations: The SPCA of Texas is working hard to help our friends at Shelters across the Gulf Coast and will be welcoming more than 120 evacuated cats from The Cattery Cat Shelter in Corpus Christi later this afternoon. The attached photo is from The Cattery Cat Shelter as they transport the cats here to North Texas. We stand at the ready to take in 300 pets and will do all in our power to help pets and people affected by this dangerous storm and its aftermath. We send our thoughts to all in the region and hope everyone stays safe.

As we prepare to deploy our disaster response here in North Texas to assist the Gulf Coast, your support is critical.

San Antonio Pets Alive is hoping to get pets into foster homes – anyone interested in helping is asked to email [email protected]

A Facebook group, Hurricane Harvey Texas Rescue, has been established for residents to turn to for help and/or concerns during this natural disaster. Click here to learn more.

There are several critical things that pet owners need to do as this storm continues to roll in.

For those evacuating, DO NOT leave your pets behind, especially outside on chains  or in pens or cages (they will likely drown). Do not leave pets inside of a vehicle – if the temperature rises after the storm, pets can die from heat stroke. Ensure that your pets have ID tags on in case they escape during the storm – this will help families reunite with their pets. Please keep your eye out for pets who have been left outside – if you see an animal in distress, please contact the authorities with a location.

  1. Pray for animals, all kinds, as well as families. Hopefully everyone has been listening to the weather channels and doing what they’ve been told to do.

  2. They WILL leave their pets outside chained. And they WILL drown. It is TEXAS.
Is there ANYTHING that could be done to go and collect those pets that are LEFT outside chained BEFORE they drown?

    • We have to hope for the best ilona. Since Katrina and most recentally sandy its animal and human safty and this time there is help in place.
This time texas provided help fot familys with their pets.
Peaple from other states are already gearing up to collect the many strays that will be coming into the metro area stunned and looking for help as well as family dogs that may have bolted. People will be collecting trapped animals standing on high ground trapoed by the flood.
But for now, I believe Texas will be looking out for each other as well as there pets for as long as they can. everyone is holding on tight. Texas will get thru this. They lived thru this 100 yrs ago. Galverston is always in the path of destructive hurricans this time houston and out side help have moved animals away days before.
houston has learned from the past you will see a lot less suffering animals and horse and dog rescue will be safer and quicker. But we need to make sure the feral dog’s and unchipped family dogs sent to out of state shelters are not euthanized like during the after math of katrina.
We have to be aware that that was a solution with out our ok and we have to stand up to that.

  3. hold on to your hats. we are beginning to see the upcoming carnage from ground zero point of totally. every one in the nation should be preparing for tough times. batteries food and water and necessities. start preparing. from now to Sept will be a rocky adjustment.
be prepared friends animals are already beginning to show strange behavior in the fields. by sept you will either be adjusted or fall, be prepared. we might each be on our own for a while.
    courage diligence.

  4. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Texas, I hope and pray all have made it to safety and took their pets with them.

  5. I will stay up with you tonite Texas.
It’s time to test that new and improved water wall against Harvey.
Hoping for the best for you.
God willing and the tides rise.
I am praying you and your loved ones,
Are all together safe and sound.
God bless you Texas. Well help you thru it

  6. All shelters should be mandated to allow animals to be housed along w/their families – NO animal should be left behind during such severe weather – many people will not evacuate and leave their pets to perish. I know I would never leave my pets. All species should be safe.

    • Nancy, that is exactly how I feel! Under no circumstances would I leave my beloved pets behind! If they say evacuate,I would gather up my pets and evacuate. I don’t understand the people who choose to ignore the evacuation order and stay behind to ride out the storm! To me that is insanity!

  7. For me,whenever Mother Nature brings any kind of disastrous weather my immediate thoughts and worries go to the animals. And that is because humans have the ability to save them selves by either evacuating or seeking shelter! But it’s all the homeless animals out there who are already struggling to survive on a daily basis that my first thoughts go to,for they have nobody to shelter them from harm! Of course I pray for all humans too,but the animals are who really pay the price. PRAYING FOR ALL THE PEOPLE AND ALL ANIMALS WHO ARE IN THE PATH OF THIS HUGE,DANGEROUS HURRICANE! ITS GOING TO MASSIVE AND RECORD BREAKING!
