A hunter shot a man’s dog on Friday afternoon, mistaking the Weimaraner for a deer. According to Massachusetts’ Truro Police Department, a 911 call was made by the dog’s owner on Friday afternoon – the man stated that his dog had been shot by a hunter in a wooded area near Pine Grove Cemetery.

When the authorities arrived, they found the dog’s owner as well as two hunters, who had remained on scene. In a release, the Department stated:

Investigating Officers located two Weimaraner dogs in the back of the dog owner’s vehicle. The dogs were brownish gray in color and weighed approximately 70 pounds each. One of the dogs had a visible gunshot wound to his right upper leg. The injured dog was immediately transported to the Eastham Veterinary Clinic by ACO Cowing for treatment, and later transported to Weymouth VCA Veterinary Hospital.

Investigating officers determined that the two dogs were running in the wooded area, off-leash, and their owner was wearing a camouflage jacket. The dogs’ owner heard a gunshot and a yelp – at that time, he yelled for the hunter to come out of the woods and the hunter complied.

According to the police, the hunter is properly licensed and is cooperating fully with the investigation; the dog, named Henry, is expected to make a full recovery.

The Truro Police Department issued a reminder to everyone that when walking in wooded areas, it is advisable to wear blaze orange to reduce the chance of being mistaken for a “game animal” during hunting season. While hunters are required to wear blaze orange during certain seasons, all outdoor users who are in the woods during hunting seasons should wear blaze orange clothing as a precaution. Pets should also wear an orange vest or bandana for visibility.

  1. I will never understand letting dogs run loose….. if they need exercise….GO TO A DOG PARK or find a ball field where you are the only person/dogs there! Why take the chance of lettering anything happen?

  2. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE SCUMBAGS IDIOT SON OF A BITCH! DOES THIS DOG LOOK LIKE A DEER, OR ARE THESE PEOPLE BLIND MONSTERS? THESE PEOPLE ARE TOO GUN HAPPY, AND I WISH THEY SHOOT THEMSELVES INSTEAD! DUMBASS MONSTERS!

    • This is the dog’s owner’s fault!! Allowing a dog that size and that color (any dog!) to run loose in an area where there is hunting is just plain stupid! We used to do some hiking and I made my dog a bright orange jacket! And I still kept her close to me! Dogs should not be allowed to run free in a hunting area. I don’t care if you approve of hunting or not this owner was stupid!!

  3. INSTEAD OF HAVING THE OWNERS AND DOGS TO WEAR CERTAIN CLOTHING AND COLORS, THEY NEED TO ABOLISH AND STOP ALLOWING PEOPLE TO HUNT DEERS! JESUS CHRIST, WHEN IS THE WORLD GOING TO CHANGE THIS? THIS IS SO EVIL THAT PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO HUNT TO BEGIN WITH! PLEASE SOMEONE CREATE A PETITION FOR THIS, THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS AND EVIL!

    • How silly! The deer population is much healthier because of hunters! The area where I live in N. GA had NO deer when I was growing up, it was a big deal to even see one! With proper management and controlled hunting the deer population is healthy. But they just ate my chard and kale so maybe too much of a good thing? LOL But they are pretty – and delicious!

    • Because the dogs owner didn’t have control of his dog and allowed it to run loose in a place it should NOT have been? I’m sorry his dog was shot but… He’s not evil and he has a right to his gun and he has a right to hunt! Are you vegan? If you are not you are a hypocrite!

    • Jennifer Taylor I agree with u! Wondering if it was “Aunt Jane’s” family member mistakenly shot by a foolish hunter that pulls the trigger of a gun without being %200 certain of what they are shooting at if she would still be typing such moronic stupidity! Some people have zero empathy and compassion! SMH

  4. They need to stop blaming people for not wearing vests and blame the idiots who shoot at whatever or whoever moves in the woods.

That hunter should be charged. No excuses.

  5. WTF!!! If u are not %100 positive of what u are shooting at then DO NOT SHOOT!!! What the hell are the hunters now a days half blind? Was it not just a week ago or so a hunter with a pistol of all things killed a woman? I’m glad the hunters are cooperating with the cops but mostly I’m relieved the dog is alive and will recover!

  6. I will never understand how a licensed hunter can mistake a dog for a deer. I have German Shepherds and the deer that come into our back yard are way bigger than my Shepherds. A Weinheimer doesn’t look anything like a deer, when have you ever seen a floppy eared deer? Hunters need to KNOW what they are shooting at before they shoot! A woman was killed near near after dark because some idiot thought she was a deer! Totally irresponsible!. That being said, dog owners need to know that there are idiots out there that shoot first then go see what they hit. This time of year keep your dogs home safe, it isn’t worth going for a hike in the woods!

  7. Aunt Jane: I am in total compliance with you – these damn hunters are way too quick to shoot anything that moves – we just had a case in my area where some idiot w/a gun shot and killed a woman who was walking her two dogs on HER property – that is how much attention these idiots pay to what they are doing. The only thing this hunter did was own up to his stupidity and he should be held responsible for the dog’s medical care.

    • Sorry all – I made a mistake and misread Aunt Jane’s post – she has no clue and it is apparent – I DO NOT AGREE W/HER.
