Houndhaven Inc. is a no kill animal shelter near Orlando, Florida.  Their main goal is rescuing dogs and puppies from kill shelters where they run the risk of being euthanized.  The dogs stay at Houndhaven until they can be placed in loving homes or with another rescue group.

Houndhaven is not a typical shelter. They house no more than 20 dogs at a time, so each dog can get plenty of individual attention.  Most of the dogs find homes within 5 months, and no dog is ever killed due to lack of space.  Volunteers describe it as a happy, positive environment for the animals.

One of Houndhaven’s most recent “guests” is Kennedy, a black and white puppy who arrived at the haven at 8 weeks old.  This poor pup almost died due to a case of Parvo and also fought off a case of ringworm. Now, at the ripe old age of 4 months, he is ready for a forever home.

Kennedy had two sisters who also suffered from Parvo and ringworm, but they have since found homes. Kennedy is waiting for his turn to find someone to love. Volunteers describe this handsome boy as funny, sweet and cute; a pup who likes other dogs, loves people, and enjoys toys like all puppies his age. Now, a whopping 15 pounds, Kennedy has tripled his weight since his arrival. He will most likely not grow up to be a huge dog, possibly in the 50-pound range.  He will make some lucky family very happy to have him in their home.

Anyone interested in adopting Kennedy, or looking at the many other wonderful dogs available for adoption can visit the Houndhaven web site at www.houndhaven.org or call 352-243-9796 and leave a message.

If you would like to work with puppies like Kennedy, Houndhaven is always in need of volunteers age 18 or older to work in the shelter. They are looking for people who can handle large dogs and have no existing medical conditions that would hinder that such as a bad back or pregnancy.

Volunteers are also needed to work adoption events at Petsmart and Petco in the Central Florida area.

Houndhaven has some exciting events coming up for the holidays. Their first event is the Howl-O-Ween Hullabaloo on October 14, 2017 at the Petco in Clermont from 10am to 2 pm. There will be various rescue groups and vendors, as well as a costume contest and other fun activities.

Help bring some Christmas cheer to homeless dogs at Santa’s Twilight 5K Run/Walk in downtown Clermont on December 16, 2017. The race starts at 7 pm, and the sign-up link is https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/Clermont/SantasTwilight5KClermont.

  1. I’ve known about Houndhaven for years (and I’m in the State of Iowa). It was through them that I learned of a Lab in really bad shape that they’d taken in and needed money for his medical care, to which I gladly donated. I’m happy to see them getting some much deserved national recognition.

  2. Thank God for this no kill shelter, so few, so much needed in other states, especially in New York, where killing is a way if life for that shelter. We have kill shelters in Calif. As well
