At the end of the year, a K9 with the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office was supposed to retire – instead, the eight-year-old dog’s life was cut short with a particularly cruel criminal act. On July 12, the Sheriff’s Office posted a notice about the incident to its social media page – the dog, a Dutch Shepherd named “Chris,” was shot at his handler’s home.

The Sheriff’s Department stated:

Chris was an eight year old Dutch Shepherd that was shot this morning at the deputy’s home in the Bald Mtn. community of Yancey County. Chris later passed away due to his injuries at the Reach Animal Hospital in Asheville. This incident occurred between the hours of 8:30 pm and 5:20 am on 7/12/2017.

The Sheriff’s Office is devastated over the loss of Chris, whom they describe as a “beloved member” of their department. A reward of $2,800 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for this heinous crime.

Individuals who want to contribute to the reward money or to the K-9 program can mail a check to: PO Box 6, Burnsville, NC 28714 attention Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard.

A memorial to honor Chris’ life and service is being held at 2 p.m. on July 20 at Mountain Heritage High.

  1. From all accounts (“This incident occurred between the hours of 8:30 pm and 5:20 am on 7/12/2017”), it sounds like the dog was kept outside instead of living in the house with the family. WTF? That doesn’t say “beloved member” to me.

    • You nailed it Darla – they can cry all they want – this ‘beloved member’ SHOULD have been in the house – not left outside for any idiot with a grudge against cops to get their revenge on – they have no one to blame but themselves. Poor Dutch deserved MUCH better. And that reward is too low – cough it up Yancey County Sheriffs Dept. You can do better.

  2. God bless him I hope the evil creeps who did this will die a cruel evil death they need to be punished & should die god bless doggie in heaven Rest In Peace bg

  3. Poor dog and was a great service to his community. I assume he was in a kennel outside and possibly someone who had a grudge with the police dept. did this. Doesn’t say how this brave dog died.

  4. Why wasn’t he kept indoors with the family? We’ve had neighbors who were K9 handlers, and every last one of them allowed their dogs inside with them, especially overnight, even the one with the dog who was so mean she scared the pit bull next door! I just don’t understand how people leave their dogs outdoors like that, especially these days with people being as vile as they are. A cop should know better.

It IS the fault of the killer, but Chris may have been targeted because he was a police dog. RIP boy.

  5. I always believe dogs should live inside the home. Dogs should not be left in the backyard without supervision regardless of the time of day, There are so many nut jobs around these days who wouldn’t think twice harming your dog as fun sport. RIP Chris, you deserved so much more.

    • I can’t think this as being either, the cops shooting our dogs are human, and most not K-9 handlers. I don’t see any irony or karma in a K-9 being murdered by some criminal.

  6. Why leave any dog left outside. Chris would still be alive if left indoors, but, then was Chris always left indoors until his last day before retiring? Hmmmm makes me wonder.
