Horribly neglected senior dog found at Arizona woman’s home

A horribly neglected senior dog was found at a woman’s home in Queen Creek, Arizona. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the 12-year-old cocker spaniel, named “Lillie,” had not been groomed for a “long, long time” and she had four pounds of matted fur that was so heavy that she could barely walk.

ABC 15 News reported that a welfare check at the 66-year-old woman’s home led to the disturbing discovery – in addition to the neglected dog, investigators discovered a malnourished and emaciated horse named “Santos.” The horse was in such poor condition that he had to be humanely euthanized.

Detective Dave Evans with MCSO described the horse’s poor condition to ABC 15, “All the ribs, bones were showing. The horse was in real bad shape. It was emaciated, it was having liver failure, it was dehydrated, and it was in very bad shape.”

The animals’ owner, identified as Sandra Wood, is facing four counts of animal cruelty. The situation remains under investigation.

When you get to be MY age (68) you won’t think 66 is “elderly” this bitch deserves jail time no matter what her age!

let’s see now, something about a welfare check? she could have given the horse to the humane shelter, before it got sick and had to be put down. then she could have bought a pair of clippers, and taken the hair off herself. what a stupid moron of a female. put her in prison,

“Hadn’t been groomed in a long, long time”? Looks to me like NEVER! The news reports her as improving from her neglect. She was described as emaciated, also.

If a Welfare Check was required on the woman owner perhaps she is not mentally or physically capable of making decisions for her own daily living needs. I am not excusing her actions in any way,but would be interested in knowing ” exactly whom called authorities for the welfare check ” were there no neighbors or concerned family ? This poor dog and the dying horse did not suffer this serious neglect and abuse in 2 weeks or 1 month time span . There is so much more to this horrible state of both animals. Nothing was said of the woman’s condition, other than charges were filed against her.
I so wish an after picture was shown of
Lillie. Prayers for her finding a Loving Forever Home.

Sandra Wood is an abuser. Send her ass to jail. How hard is it to give up your animals if you can’t handle them?

Sandra Wood should be treated as poorly as she treated her dog and horse. Hogtie this bitch and dump her useless ass in the desert – let her rot like she did to these innocent animals. There are some people who deserve to be eliminated and she is one of them. There is NO excuse for this neglect.

People are soooo quick to form an opinion and condemn people without taking the time to find out if what their being told or reading is in fact the WHOLE story!!.. The time it took all of you to write your foul mouthed thoughts and opinions you could of looked into this got all the facts and then form an opinion instead you’re just listening to a tiny speck of a huge situation… now would it be fair of me not knowing all of you individually to go ahead and form the opinion that you all are sheep

Pray tell what part of the WHOLE story are we missing here? What excuse is there for not brushing and caring for your dog or letting your horse get into such “bad” shape it needs to be euthanized? Tell me what are we missing that we should back step our opinion of this woman? I say it like I see it, I don’t really care what you think of me or my opinion, but I read all accounts of this that I could find and see no “speck” of information that should condone or excuse what this woman allowed to happen. So enlighten me to why this woman shouldn’t be condemned!

Well …i guess I’ll start from the beginning…Sandra has always had a passion for horses. Her backyard is huge with stables and corals and runs. In her earlier years she did shows and stuff. For about a year now she’s been in and out of lengthy hospital stays…the last 3 months were her worst. She got so sick so fast she couldn’t get a hold of her health. One day she went to get a glass of water and collapse on her floor. She had a stroke and laid there for 6 days till the neighbor across the street thought that her mailbox was overflowing and went to knock on the door and see if everything was okay she was able to muster up enough strength to yell help. She’s still in the hospital as of today she had diabetes kidney failure and many many more ailments. Now when she knew six or seven even eight months ago that she was ill and hired some woman by the name of Toni to come every 2 days Philip 100 gallon barrels of water and feed and brush Santos. Now Sondra being as sick as she was told the lady to just go in the backyard and care for sontos and Lily and every two weeks paid her through some kind of PayPal thing. Sandra had no idea this woman was not doing her job. Matter of fact when ambulance people got to her house and we’re taking her to the hospital she kept saying wait let me get my phone so she could call Toni and let Toni know she was going to hospital and to look after the “kids” as she called them. Sandra has not been able to walk for a long time do to being so I’ll. So she couldn’t go check on Santos…she just trusted the wrong person to care for Santos and Lilly. She didn’t even know Santos had been put down!!.. I had mentioned it in conversation and saw her just crumble in grief. The reason I know so much about this story is because like a lot of you guys I saw the story read the news articles and was outraged but before I could curse the day Sandra was born…I found the hospital where she was at and called her room and asked if I could talk with her. She had no idea what was going on…no idea she was in the news…nothing. so from that day on I’ve been visiting her quite often and Ben trying to help her anyway that I could. I am committed to finding this Toni person…not sure if when i do if I’ll turn her in to authorities or dish out my own form of Street Justice

Factsfinder, thank you for the enlightenment. You spin a very sad tale, and yet the authorities that must know all of this still charged her with animal abuse. I am trying to wrap my head around all of her woe’s and still think if I were in her position, I would have made sure my pets were taken care of and not trusted someone I obviously didn’t know. Somehow she must have been getting help to get groceries and prepare food for herself if she was unable to go into her yard to check on her pets, and where was her dog so she couldn’t see what was going on with Lily? Did she leave her in the barn with the horse? You state this has been going on about a year, the Vets state the dog had been neglected long before that. So this “sheep” still thinks that something still stinks about this story, and I am not ready to just give this woman a pass for her dead horse and horribly neglected dog. Oh by the way, I deal with Paypal, if she were paying the woman via paypal Toni has to have a legitimate address and accounts associated with the account. You can’t have an account with them, they check your address and accounts. Good luck tracking down the monster.

I have never had a PayPal account so I didn’t think of being able to use PayPal as a way to find Toni…thank you for mentioning that!!
