A Hempstead woman was arrested on Monday and faces animal cruelty charges for stabbing her sister’s dog in the face “several times” after the dog bit her one-year-old child. Stephanie Penado, 26, was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and third-degree criminal mischief. Her arraignment took place on Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
According to the CbsNews, the child only suffered a minor cut to his face. The dog, a two-year-old Siberian husky named Rex, was transported to the North Shore Animal League where he is being treated for his injuries. The dog belongs to Penado’s sister. The dog needed surgery to repair his open wounds – costing more than $2,000.
Penado’s sister will not be charged for the “attack” on the child.
On Wednesday, the judge ordered Penado to undergo a mental health evaluation.
