Helen: Stray left lying in heartbreaking little ball on side of road

Along the streets of Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, stray dogs are a common sight. Most are friendly and a bit skinny as they scavenge about the villages trying to survive; often gentle folks will feed them scraps, even in the poverty stricken areas. When a Good Samaritan notified Animal Aid Unlimited about Helen however, this poor dog’s plight was so tragic that her heartbreaking condition brought tears to even the most stoic of rescuers.

“Our rescue team found her lying in a heart-broken little ball on the side of the road. Her hip bones, rib cage and spine jutted against her paper-thin skin. She looked like she no longer believed that life could hold anything but pain, and she didn’t have the strength to even stand. Pain and hunger had taken everything from her.”

Even as the rescuers offered her cookies, Helen was too weak to accept any food; the aged dog with no teeth had given up all hope. Her crusted skin burned and itched – just a few tufts of fur remaining that had once been part of her glorious golden coat. She cried in pain and agony when she was wrapped in a blanket and picked up to be rushed back to the veterinary hospital at Animal Aid.

Helen’s rehabilitation began very slowly. First she was given medication to ease the intense pain from mange. Intravenous medication was started to fight the severe dehydration, but Helen had been so defeated and so depressed, she still wouldn’t eat. All she did was sleep, and then came a glimmer of hope. For the first time since she was rescued, the dog took a few small bites of food. Three days later she ate her first full meal. By the tenth day, Helen had her first bath – and as the scabs slowly fell off and a soothing lotion was applied to her skin, she began to heal; both physically and spiritually.

  1. How could anyone walk past that poor dog and not do something? It boggles my mind the callousness of humans – THANK GOD for ANIMAL AID – they literally performed a miracle transforming Helen – she deserves all the love and affection she can get.

    • I share your feelings. I think the problem is that the people in India, are very poor so have little to give. But it is strange that they appear to have the philosophy not to harm animals, but they don’t seem to go to the next level and actually help them . Thanks goodness for the people that do help the lost and lonely ones. Bless them and the little animals.

  2. The poorest of the poorest of Indias poorest.
