Heartbroken owner forced to surrendered beloved dog

A senior dog has been surrendered to a busy California animal control agency after his owner suffered a serious back injury. The dog, a nine-year-old German shepherd mix named “Sampson” is undoubtedly heartbroken and confused after the loss of his adoring owner.

On Wednesday, the volunteer-run Facebook page, Saving Carson Shelter Dogs, described the sad situation:

SAMPSON is 120 pounds of PURE LOVE and his Owner has a serious back injury and could no longer walk and care for his very large best friend. He brought him to the Shelter hoping someone could give him a better life with exercise and activity he needs to be healthy. The Owner was heartbroken and said he had SAMPSON for his whole life and he is AMAZING with everyone!

Sampson needs help – the animal control facility is full and owner-surrendered dogs are most at risk of being put down. Please share Sampson’s information and help him find a new owner to love him.

  1. Why can’t the community get together to help this man? Volunteer walkers for Sampson and people to play with him. Help the dad relax and heal and Sampson stay where he belongs

    • I totally agree with lisa it is heartbreaking for animals they feel like they let u down n r now b n punished plz dont punish his undying love for his human help them stay together

    • Yes, let this dog stay with his owner and help him to care, maybe this dog could help in some other ways, to felt not alone with his situation. Please come and help the bestfriends.

    • My thoughts exactly! While it’s far easier for us to focus on animals in need, turning a blind eye & hardened heart to a fellow human is just as bad as the monsters who throw kittens & puppies out of speeding cars on highways. I wish the shelter had spoken with it’s staff to offer help to this owner who would benefit with the love & companionship of their furry friend to recuperate. I bet if people had reached out to offer help to keep them together, be it family & friends, neighbors or even perfect strangers (perhaps through an outreach of the social workers at a local medical facility or religious organization); these 2 would have been able to stay together.

  2. Is there NO other shelters in California other than Carson? Although I have to commend Saving Carson Shelter Dogs and Pet Rescue Report for getting these dogs out in the media and seen, Carson isn’t the best place especially for an owner surrender to end up in. I will be sharing Samson and keeping this beautiful boy in my prayers. If only I was rich and didn’t live on the other side of the country!

    • There are so many shelters but you have tontake your dog to the public shekter that is assigned to your area…but you could also lie. That’s what I do to get strays to a no-kill facility. Unfortunately Carson serves a low income, large swath of SoCal

  3. Please will someone out there help. He did not have to give up his Dog. There are folks out there that would Care for His Dog by taking Him for Walks. Feed Him. Etc. The owner has to do a lot of Therapy.

  4. I injured my back badly while serving in Somalia in 1992! I hung in there, in a great deal of pain finally having 4 back surgery in 2014! I have a service dog and would be lost without him! Even if he was “just” my dog I would find someone to care for him! As a matter of fact many people came to his rescue and mine and cared for him throughout that year. I WOULD NEVER GIVE HIM UP!! Please, please, work with this man and take Samson back home and put all of the plans into place for both of them!!! DO NOT KILL SAMSON!!

    • Carson reported to the cross posters on Facebook that Samson was rescued. No details, no freedom pictures no pledge money asked for like rescues always need and ask for… cross posters were ignored when they asked for freedom pics… a woman asked where to send pledge money, still no answer from Carson. I just do not buy the story at all and I doubt Samson ever came out alive.. if he came out alive it was most likely to go to a research lab … This article never updated the rescue like they have other dogs, I really find that suspicious.

  5. I love this dog . Im a foster. And would like to foster this dog. But I’m so far away . I’m in southwest Houston Texas . Sorry ????

    • Has anyone contacted you about this offer? I suspect that you/we could take up a collection for transport. I would take him too but I am in northern WI. Sadly, way too far away.

  6. What is sad is that there are several GSD Rescues that will take owner surrender dogs to avoid this from happening, and avoid putting the dog at risk. So frustrating. I hope this pups gets saved!!

  7. If someone can pull him out and put him in boarding, everyone can chip in to pay for the dog to be at a local boarding facility and not the shelter !

  8. People dump seniors everywhere, but I feel like I read about the majority of them being dumped at Carson. Would be good to open a big senior sanctuary out there. They shouldn’t have to be in these nasty shelters afraid and at high risk to be killed.

  9. Please help Sampson get out of the shelter! Yes he is still there, so sad for him & his owner. If I lived closer I would take him just until his owner was able to care for him again but I also live far away in PA but please someone open your heart & home to help Sampson be safe until he can be cared for again by his owner.

    • I researched about Samson to try to find out why all of a sudden the shelter just lists him no longer available, no word about him … then a web site I found lead me to carson shelter , a comment was made he was rescued, but no name of a rescue was given , which is odd and no pledge money was asked for from the unknown rescue. Now, I have to tell you being a cross poster for shelters, it is odd they never said the name of the rescue, nor asked for his pledge money. The last time I saw this happen , no one was ever to know who rescued the dog which is b.s., I really get suspicious when the rescue is not named, or pledges asked for, most likely they killed Samson. Why else won`t they tell the name of the rescue and want pledges? Are these shelters selling these dogs to laboratories? Lord Samson was so sweet and the look on his face he wanted to go home with his dad and he knew bad was happening. Sorry folks I do not believe the owner cared for his dog to bring him to one of the highest kill shelters known and walk out the door and not look back.. he could have gotten a rescue to take him and I do not buy this b.s. story at all, my mom did not raise a chump. On top of this, there was such a big build up story about him getting dumped there but not updates,in this article about his rescue like other stories they have done on here where the dog was updated by telling of a rescue… not in Samson`s case. Where are the freedom photos the cross posters on Facebook asked for? The cross posters were ignored by Carson because there was no freedom pics , and this story showed none either, the rescue never happened.
