Heartbreaking reality: Owners line up at shelter to surrender their pets before July 4th parties

A long line at the entrance to an open-door animal shelter in Houston, Texas has inspired a great deal of dialogue on social media about the homeless animal crisis happening in many areas of the nation. The heartbreaking photo was taken by the rescue group Snarr  – Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation. On the organization’s Facebook page, the frustration and anger over the number of surrendered animals was palpable:

“All these dogs and cats are about to be DUMPED to face a death sentence. Right now, they are standing in line, the concrete searing their paws, and they have no idea that it’s about to get worse,” the post begins.

And then the reality of what the dogs and cats are quickly sensing and the apparent indifference of their human companions brings both anger and tears at the same time:

“They’ll be dragged from the person they love, the person that swore to love and care for them for the duration of their lives. They’ll be confused, sad, but most of all terrified. The smell of death is overpowering here. After a day or two of sleeping on cold, dirty floors with the cacophony always all around, shivering and scared, they’ll be walked down a long hall to a room.”

The world will soon end for that once “loved” pet while their owners most likely are reveling in the fireworks, the celebrations and the long vacation weekends, but wait – Fluffy and Fido breathed their last. Vacations and holiday celebrations are the most common reasons pets are surrendered at this time of year:

“A needle will slide into their veins and they’ll slip away, wondering where their beloved human is and why they never came back.”

This is just one shelter, and if anyone thinks this is an unusual occurrence and perhaps this writer or the rescuers of Snarr are exaggerating, here are more examples of what continues across the country:

“Snarr – Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation This is the harsh reality every day at most every large city shelter. 8 surrenders at the Harris Shelter at the time someone was there looking for an lost dog.”

“Brenda Lee The exact thing is happening in Philly this week, today too. We have over 80 owner surrenders in one week. Our shelter only holds about 100 big dogs. So, you can imagine how bad it is.”

“Wendy NV Our rural shelter in the Mojave desert in CA is suffering the same…more come to drop animals than help them the past few weeks.”

And while some may say every person who shows up at a shelter with a dog or cat may not always be the owner, many times people will not admit to being an owner to avoid paying a surrender charge – funding used to feed and care for the shelter pets no longer wanted by their families. Of course there are hardship cases, but reach out to the community for help, call friends and family, contact breed specific rescue organizations and network to find your faithful companion a home before surrendering them to an open admission animal shelter. Make sure to spay and neuter and reduce the problem of unwanted litters.  How many of these young, healthy pets will ever make it out of the shelter? How about the senior dog whose heart is broken into a thousand tiny pieces as he watches his owner walk away for the last time?

“What can you do about it? FOSTER. ADOPT. TRANSPORT. SHARE. DONATE. And always remember to spay and neuter pets. Looking away is being a part of the problem.”

Did you know? There are currently 230 dogs available for adoption at Houston’s BARC Animal Shelter (open-admission facility) and 133 cats. At the Harris County Animal Shelter there are currently 256 homeless dogs and 318 cats.

In a response from BARC, Jennifer Durrence Donaldson, the deputy assistant director for the shelter stated,

“The line in the photo includes both wellness and intake customers. We had 57 wellness and foster customers today.”

The shelter takes in 26,000 dogs and cats annually stating they have an 80% rescue rate. Therefore 20% or 5,200 dogs and cats die at the shelter each year. Divide the number by 365 days, assuming the shelter is never closed, which then averages 71 pets entering the facility daily; therefore averaging 14 dogs and cats per day surrendered or turned in as strays. While the efforts of BARC are to be celebrated, there is still much work to be done.

  1. All of these POS owners just sentence all of their pets to death. So disgusted with the human race. Heartless, soulless and pure evil.

      • Buy a gun chuck it only get worse from here. Pets are an inconvenience. They’re fun for a while, until they start to invade on your social life, interrupting your texting and cell phone conversations, and dam-it they don’t know how to use the toilet and have to be “Walked” and it’s a pain in the ass in the dead of winter. If I go to the store I can’t leave it in the car or I’ll be arrested. They’re just like women and require attention all the time. Yeah chuck the human race sure is a fuck up.

      • John, I gave David the benefit of the doubt but I have found when being “sarcastic” it’s wise to state you are being “sarcastic” sometimes people don’t get it and take it the wrong way.

      • LOL David! Yep, heaven forbid a dog peel someone off the couch to appreciate life outside of social media. Maybe even get some circulation and exercise while they’re at it.
I loveeeeeee my dog. I get more laughs and good times with him (and meet super cool human beings) than I’ve ever gotten from social media. That’s for sureeeee!

    • I’ve worked at a shelter, I’ve seen seniors come in who beloved pets were suffering and needed to be put down due to age or illness (cancer) and they couldn’t afford the outrageous prices. VEts want to humainly end their suffering. I realize it’s expensive to have a pet as I have 3 diabetic dogs that require insulin and just had 5 four day old pups brought to me who’s mom didn’t make it and I’m bottle feeding them. But as we say pets are for Life and sometimes hardships hit ppl and they have no one else to help them, I just buried my boyfriend in Sept and we had life insurance or I would never had been able to keep our 3 dogs as I only get 735. a month to live on. We set up our life insurance just so our pets could have a full life at home

      • I had to put down my sweet Becca Sue last summer due to mast cell cancer. When her inoperable tumor ruptured and she began to bleed internally, my vet was closed, so I took her to another. The fee for euthanasia was $20.00. Cremation was $90. That fee went to the crematory, not the vet. Eight years prior, I had to put down my Cleo. Again my vet was closed for the day, so I took her to a 24 hour emergency hospital. The euthanasia fee was $20.00, and the crematory was $90.00. I could have brought both of them home and disposed of them in the trash, but I opted not to do that. I don’t think those fees are outrageous. I got to stay with my dogs until they took their last breaths and their hearts beat the last beat. And they let me stay with them until I was ready to let go. Far better than leaving your pet in a strange, scary place with no one but a complete stranger with them as they died.

      • Wow Marta, I totally agree with your sentiment but I need to live where you live bc here in Oklahoma our euthanasia and cremations aren’t $20 and $90. Ive taken my 14 year old dogs to the emergency vet and regular vet and both were hundreds of dollars. The non emergency vet was less, but not reasonable still and they even charged me $50 extra for the extra shot to make him comfortable first. I love my babies and try to take good care of them but I really hate how it feels like such a racket and almost impossible to give them good care unless you’re really well off financially.

    • If we go on vacation, we kennel our dog, and have someone check in on our cat…it’s sad, BUT wouldn’t it be more cruel to just abandon them on the side of the road? People act all disgusted with animals dropped at shelters or babies dropped at hospitals/firehouses, but isn’t that better than putting them on a heap in a garbage can? Don’t get me wrong…I take care of my animals, and they’re always happy to see me, but I would rather them be dropped in shelter than dumped by the road, or beaten.

    • Agreed! But every person who eats meat is doing the exact same thing, on a daily basis, to cows, pigs and chickens, who feel pain and fear exactly the same as dogs and cats do.

    • Helen, It is horrible! But before you bash Texas too much (I am not from Texas nor do I live there) you need to know that the worst most abusive shelter in the entire USA is New York City. Over 8000 adoptable dogs are killed per year there! It is a city filled with uncaring self centered narcissists and with one of the worst Mayors on the planet. Then you move out to LA, 2nd worst in this country, with horrible horrible abuse and death…then to Miami Fla, very abusive system and death camps. Texas is by far not the worst in this country for these things! I’m in rescue and these things are well known…

      • Actually I think the most heartless shelter award belongs to the one and only shelter run by PETA! The last I read it had a much higher kill rate than any other shelter in the USA. On a side note this story sets my hogwash meter off! Meaning I have a hard time believing it.

      • Timothy L Ritchie. Please cut the crap! I’m sure that you’re as aware as anyone else that PETA do not actually run a shelter. They offer a free euthanasia service to people who can’t afford the amount vets charge for it. The ‘PETA shelter kill rate’ myth has been exposed as a lie for years now. Quit spreading misinformation to promote your anti animal rights agenda.

    • I’m in Texas and have devoted my life to rescuing all animals…opened my own horse rescue, which is solely operated by me…supported by me, and private person donations. I go without, to ensure animals in need get theirs first. If you want to stereotype Texas, fine. I’d like to be a stereotypical Texan when it comes to dishing out what these subhumans discarding their “pets” really deserve!!! Noone carries out justice better than Texas. Helen, y all come down & see us sometime. ..ya hear!!???

    • I’m from Texas, and I adore my pets. I’ve had my two cats for 10 years, and they’ve gone with me on every vacation I’ve taken since I adopted them. Every dog and cat I’ve ever adopted has been with me their entire lives.

    • Helen, your comment is what is unbelievable. Are you not aware of animal abuse and neglect not only in EVERY state in the U.S., but WORLDWIDE. And you must not be aware of the great strides made in the last few years to enforce cruelty charges with jail time. Who do you think the persistent squeaky wheel is pushing that? I’ve been rescuing for 45 years personally, as well as working with various organizations locally. Not even going to guess where you are from, because it’s a moot point. So, as us hillbillies and rednecks in Texas say, after we take the hayseed out of our mouth, “thems’ fightin’ words”???? So, you need to come on down, sit for a spell and see for yourself. Regards from Texas!

    • I’m a 62 yr old vegan living in Texas with my 52 year old vegan wife and our 14 yr old vegan (6 years no meat) brother Booter. Acts like he’s 2. We donate to a local no kill shelter and a farm animal sanctuary in Angleton Texas. Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.
And we find it disgusting that people could do this to their companions. But the shame is a worldwide issue, not just Texas.

    • Helen….What has TEXAS got to with it????? These ignorant people get to me. What in the world does HELEN know about TEXAS??? I am shattered at these pictures, but some people like HELEN make me sick.
God Bless all these wonderful little innocent animals who are being thrown to the wind for no good reason. There never is a good reason.

  2. I AM DISGUSTED BY THIS!!! How do you give up your pet to death!! Maybe these people should be profiled and their photos placed on the internet. THIS IS BEYOND MY COMPREHENSION!! When my Wrigley gets scared from fireworks, I cuddle him and reassure him that he is safe. I don’t take him to his death!!

    • Angela, I just told soneone how if I don’t have someone to watch my dog, I won’t go out on July 4th because my dog is SO afraid of the fireworks! If only more people cared about their pets like we do.

    • I’d like to know how real this is. Not defending these people, but many people drop pets off at shelters, for a nominal fee, and pick them up after vacation.

  3. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME REALLY????? THIS IS SO MUCH BULLSHIT!!!!! THOSE STUPID ASSHOLES NEED TO BE THROWN IN THOSE CAGES INSTEAD OF THE PETS!!!! I HATE PEOPLE!!!!

  4. As a person that takes very few “vacations” because I have to board my 4 dogs I find this appalling! There is NO vacation or celebration worth the life of one of my dogs! These people are disgusting!

    • You said it best!!!!!!

My husband and I stagger our business travel whenever it’s possible so as to minimize the stress on our furbabies. It’s not the cost of boarding, it’s the stress they experience when not with us……..

We always stay home on 7/4 as our furbabies freak out from the noise…..

Right now I am staying home for MacKitty as he is in the fight of his life with liver cancer……. I would NEVER give him up without a HUGE fight…….

No trip or possession is worth a life……. NEVER………

Who cares if our cars are 20 & 17 years old & that I only buy shoes once every 4 years……. we soend our money on vet bills…….

SMH @ these POS owners giving their furbabies death sentences……..

Special place in Hell for these POS owners (& I hope they get there sooner vs. later)……..

      • Bunny Peters & hubby you ROCK???? many of us wish we could do that ya know. you’re blessed to be able to, especially with MacKitty and his time of need. My prayers to you during this very emotional part of life????????

      • So TRUE. Here we are lucky we only have no KILL shelters in my country. But I cry and share all I can on my wall just to save 1 dog or cat. Here its about 400 USD to abandon an animal, to a shelter and pr. year theres only about 35000 animals in shelters. Its not easy to get an animal here its very strickt supervision and you dont get one if its not a fit. I have 3 2 senior ladies and 1 young male. I hope your Furbaby gets well again.
        Hugs from Denmark

      • You are so right, we recently took a trip from our home in New York to visit my husband’s daughter’s family in Florida, I was worried sick the whole time about my 12 year old GSD who is showing the signs of his age. It isn’t the cost at all, it’s their well being I worry about. These people should be ashamed of themselves doing this to their pets!

      • A good friend of mine travels a lot. She got a doctor to sign a document from the airline that her little dog provides emotional security for her, so it flies with her for free. She has a special sacthel carrier that fits under the seat with the dog on her lap.

      • I have 3 insulin dependant diabetic dogs they go everywhere I go or we don’t go on vacation point blank . They are family and you take them with on vacations would you leave your human children behind so u can go vacation

    • Id rather stay home with my germie than go ne where else but this is soo fucked up they should b ppl pounds like dog pounds for ppl who can just drop their child or something off instead or this shit if u cant agree then pay the penalty and get abortions cuz this is soo fucked up and i shouldnt have read this now im extreme pist at texas and all should b shot!!

    • Called my local shelter, and here (upstate NY) people drop their pets off for a nominal fee and pick them up when they get back

    • Our local no kill shelter here boards pets also, I too live in upstate New York. I don’t think you can surrender you pet to them though and expect to get them back when you return.

  5. What kind of ‘animal lover’ does that make you??? Shallow selfish and cruel….this is not an ornament you are taking to it’s end, it WAS your friend and companion. DO NOT get another animal EVER. No animal will ever need your kind of love again. Shame on you all, you are literally killing it as you let go of the leash. Never have I heard of such a shameful situation. Karma. She will be on your case, as soon as you walk away, and it will be well deserved.

  6. Pet shop love u why please think very through before you do this thier heart is in pieces & crying why did y do this to me why u are for them forever do not give up your beloved pets for you are giving up a love ❤️ that truly belongs to your pet & you please stop take pet home with you please take back what belongs to you in your heart & loves you forever bg

  7. What selfish assholes to surrender their pets so that they can enjoy themselves on a holiday weekend! Hope these people don’t have children. What lesson are they teaching them? If you don’t want something you can just get rid of it. Hope they never own another animal!

  8. Why weren’t the faces of the people abandoning their pets to the shelter included in the photo? Then, they should NEVER be allowed to own another animal again. NEVER FUCKING EVER!

    • Because the owners above were there to get shots for their pets, not surrender them – would have caused a Whole lot of legal trouble if the photos were used to promote fake news like this.

  9. Why weren’t the faces of the people abandoning their pets to the shelter included in the photo? Then, they should NEVER be allowed to own another animal again. NEVER FUCKING EVER!

  10. This is so heartbreaking and i am sick to my stomach reading this. How these owners abandon their dogs and cats its beyond me just because they want to enjoy the celebrations. Why can’t they just enjoy it in their own homes with the animals instead of dumping them in a high kill shelter. These owners are bloody selfish BASTARDS and only thinking of themselves. Karma will get her revenge on all of these SCUMBAGS owners i can guarantee it

  11. What they can’t put them in a room with food and water while they party. These people absolutely disgust me. They should be put on a list of people not allowed to adopt, because more then likely they will do it again. Trash everyone of them.

  12. Why weren’t the faces of the people abandoning their pets to the shelter included in the photo? Then, they should NEVER be allowed to own another animal again. NEVER FUCKING EVER!

  13. Sadly we know many will go back out after the holiday and get another innocent being and then again another holiday many lives betrayed by these selfish greedy punk ass subhumans!
Would love to be there snapping pictures and definitely putting them on a big Wall of Shame with many choice words under each photo..

  14. THESE PEOPLE SUCK
They are subhuman and none of them deserve to live among normal people here on Earth. I sincerely hope their houses burn down – with them in it – from the stupid fireworks, or they get shot through the head at their crappy drunk-fest parties.

  15. All these people should be put on a list to never be able to adopt another animal. I have had dogs and cats through out the years. All I do is close windows and turn on the air conditioner. These people have to give up their animals because the want to party?? Shame on them.

  16. There needs to be a policy that when you surrender your pet like this the day that pet is executed for your SELFISHNESS the shelter needs to send you a registered letter telling you “We killed your pet today. Just thought you’d want to know. They looked for you to rescue them until they took their last breath.”

And these people’s names need to be put on a NATIONAL REGISTER of DO NOT ADOPT that can be accessed by every shelter and rescue nationwide.

I hope it rains on their vacations. I hope they get diarrhea. I hope their flights are cancelled. I hope their fireworks fizzle. I hope every moment of their summer is a living hell of disappointment and betrayal. Perhaps then they will know a small portion of what they put their pets through. And people wonder why I prefer the company of my dogs!

  17. SO HEARTLESS. HOW CAN ANY OF THEM LOOK THEMSELVES IN THE MIRROR?? KNOWING THEY DID THIS TO THEIR PET, A FAMILY MEMBER?? DOING THIS UNSPEAKABLE ACT TO THEIR PETS THEY NEED NOT EVER SAY THEY ARE GOOD. THEY HAVEN’T EARNED THAT RIGHT. NOT BY THEIR ACTIONS.

  18. People who abandon their pets “just because” should be on a NATUONAL list and NEVER be able to adopt or own another animal, just like the abusers out there! We are suppose to be a nation full of intelligent people,we are suppose to be a nation that loves dogs,we are suppose to be the wealthiest nation in the world but yet we can’t sit down and come up with new and innovated solutions to the over-population of dogs? Society accepts the mistreatment and abandonment of dogs and cats, society accepts the disgusting classification of these animals as PERSONAL PROPERTY with no rights, society accepts the idea that companion animals are DISPOSABLE PERONAL PROPERTY! Who ever thought that a thinking, feeling, living creature should be classified as personal property with no right to their God given life should be sent to a deserted island for such asinine stupity! This is a HUGE AND HORRIFIC problem that if we continue to ignore is going to grow and grow and grow! IGNORING IT WILL NOT MAKE IT DISAPPEAR! IGNORING IT WILL NOT MAKE IT GET BETTER! Humanity domesticated the dog and now humanity needs to fix this immoral and sad problem! Humanity should of just left the dog in the wild because they wouldn’t of had to endured the horrors they do in this day and age! SUCH A HEARTBREAKING NIGHTMARE!!!

  19. People who do this should NEVER be allowed to have another animal of any kind.i believe makeing the choice to get an animal is a commentment and shouldn’t be broken. Just like makeing a choice to have a baby. One just don’t decide one day they don’t want it any more and, that’s ok… NO IT’S NOT…. IT JUST SEEMS MORE AND MORE PEOPLE NOW DAYS JUST DON’T HAVE ANY FEELINGS AT ALL FOR LIFE OF ANY KIND ANYMORE. OUR WORLD HAS GONE TO SHIT BECAUSR OF PEOPLE LIKE THIS AND WHAT’S EVEN MORE SAD IS THAT THESE HEARTLESS PEOPLE CONTINUE TO BREED

  20. This doesn’t make sense. Every pet owner I have ever met would die for their pet. Something about this smells like fake news.

    • You do realize that this happens at shelters all across the country right?
Around 8 million animals a year enter the shelter system…
We kill nearly 3 million of them. 1 in 10 dogs born ever finds a forever home. There’s nothing remotely fake about this issue.
      – a shelter volunteer

    • It happens before every major holiday, and family vacations are a big reason for surrender, holiday or not. But let me guess – according to your kind, there’s no such thing as climate change either?

    • I guess Patty you are lucky to only know quality pet owners. This certainly isn’t “fake news” it happens every holiday!

  21. They make it to easy to sundered your pet IT SHOULD BE MANDATORY TO HAVE TO WATCH A VIDEO OF WHAT HAPPENS IN THE EUTHANASIA ROOM SO WHEN YOUR PETS TIME IS UP THE VIDEO WILL BE SENT TO THE POS WHO GAVE THEM UP

    • Great Idea!!!

I think kill shelters should send videos (cellphone videos would be sufficient) of the animals being euthanized to the actual people who surrendered them……(all the shelter needs to do is keep a file of animals’ ids linked to surrender names & contact info). I think attitudes about “casually” surrendering pets would change…….

I remember when my former co-worker told me that she brought her 2 year old dog to the pound to be put down (the family couldn’t control him….. no training, not de-sexed…..smh: that’s why it’s necessary to train an animal & de-sexing helps keep them home and not roaming around looking for a mate)…..

She was so casual about ending his life and then had the nerve to ask me for advice on the next pet…… I was horrified to learn what she had done and told her that all animals have needs and are children with fur. I told her that she needs to put as much effort into caring for an animal as for a child (vet care and nourishment, obviously, but education and training are as essential for an animal as for a child.). Also, unless one is a professional breeder, all companion animals should be de-sexed so there are no unwanted litters adding to the pet overpopulation problem…..

I think if she had been required to watch her dog being euthanized, she would not have been so casual about having and then abandoning animals.

  22. I HATE MOST PEOPLE!! WORTHLESS SELFISH POS SCUM TRASH!! WHY DO YOU EVEN GET A PET?? ????????
THERE IS A SPECIAL SPOT IN HELL WAITING YOUR ARRIVAL????????????
PLEASE GOD,,, SAVE THE PRECIOUS FURBABIES???? PLEASE????

  23. This is EXTREMELY misleading. Is anyone doing fact checking over there? Call the shelter. This is a line for wellness appointments. Low cost vaccines.

    • What shelter is this? I know some people who would love to fact check, but “a shelter in Huston Texas” doesn’t help us

  24. This is why you should have to pay $1000’s of dollars for a pet to be in your home, because just maybe someone will think twice about how hard they had to work to get that pet, how valued that pet is, REGULATION ON BREEDING, STOP THE FRIGGIN’ GLUTS OF COMPANION ANIMALS CRANKED OUT BY GREEDERS!!!!!!!!!!

    • You obviously have no idea how many pure bred, expensive dogs end up in shelters. People who can afford to pay that much don’t think twice about tossing them like garbage. I have two European Great Danes, an Italian Mastiff, a Brazilian Mastiff, and an Anatolian Shepherd – all from kill shelters. The dog park people thought I must be rich to have such expensive, show quality dogs.

  25. I’m in NO WAY defending what they are doing, but it does make me question: Why does it cost so much to board a dog? I’ve done it many times, and what I’ve found is that my dogs spend most of their time in a cage. Even if I pay extra for extra walks or the pool, STILL, they spend most of their time in a cage. So, why to boarding houses think they should charge so much for boarding?

The very people who claim to love animals the most; people who work for Vets (or the Vet, themselves), or pet boarding houses, charge extraordinary prices for all types of services, so therefore the AVERAGE person in discouraged from taking on a rescue, or any dog or cat for that matter. And then they sit back and judge the rest of us for being selfish!

    • thank you Karen I was raise on a farm so I have allways has a dog but after I lost my husband and his dog of 14 to cancer a lady was getting rid of a little dog people shut in a door and broke all her ribs 4lb,then another was in a parking lot given this little male dog away and I got him then a lady was going to dump her big dog on the street cause she was moveing so I got her the same night a lady gave up her dobbie cause a dog beat her up I got all 4 dogs spaded and all there shots up dated well I have had them going on 5 years last winter the sheaper fell on ice and hurt her hip the vet wants 5,000 to fix it I don’t have that kind of money so I ask could I make payment and they said no I also ask for help all I got told is what a bad person iam for not be able to take care of my dog.i even said I would give her up as that break my heart.she can run just has trouble getting up and down and I have to help her get into the car ian going on 66 years old people told me to take her to the pound but I cant do that.what do you think am I bad to my dogs cause I love them so much

      • You my dear are in a place that many of us are in. I am dealing with a 12 year old German Shepherd with an ulcerated eye. I have already spent close to $1,000 on my vet and the specialist who now thinks maybe he needs surgery to the tune of $1,200. I am 69 and my SS & pension amount to approximately $900 a month take home. What have I done? my IRA is down to nothing, and my credit cards are maxed out. But I would do it all again for any of my 4 pups. You are doing the best you can and I applaud you, for anyone to call you a bad person for not having the money and asking for help is disgusting. I will keep you in my prayers, I wish I was rich and could help.

  26. Record the names of ALL these bastards and add them to A NATIONAL REGISTER OF THOSE WHO SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED THE PRIVILEGE OF ADOPTING OR PURCHASING *** ANY *** COMPANION ANIMAL, EVER AGAIN!!!

  27. That is simply unbelievable. Its also because its too easy for these people to be able to surrender. If they made it a painstaking nuisance, maybe a lot of these people would think twice

    • Wow, blind-biased much? Austin, Dallas, and Houston tend to go Democrat. The WORST cities in the country for animal welfare and high euthanasia rates are in Democrat-run cities!

      • I would say that animal abuse is equal opportunity and neither Democrats nor Republicans hold an advantage in this issue.

  28. Really u people make me sick these animals love u unconditional and all u can do is dump them off u people dont derserve a animal u have no care in the world what happens to them animals are family for life

  29. They all sick I’m retired 62 years old I have 4 dogs six cats only get $1,300 a month but my animals are fed happy and they go to the vet regularly

  30. This makes me want to bawl. Wait, I am. There’s a special place in hell for these pet “owners”. I’d rather go without a vacation or a party or even food! Before I’d let anything happen to my pets. I’d take them all if I could…

  31. They should never be able to have another animal ever again. There pets where not family members to them in the first place. Wonder if those soul less heart less dumbass people are giving there kids up too, or is that there money maker! Keep these people from ever being able to have cats, dogs, horses, goats, pigs, chickens, nothing they are cruel senseless pieces of crap.

  32. This makes me shocked, sickened, angry, tearful and deeply depressed. People was despicable and my heart bleeds for each and every four legged creature WHO DESERVES BETTER! Deepy upsetting, that people don’t care that they’re animals will suffer unimaginable fear, sadness and terror that accompanies knowing they’re humans were more than happy to have them murdered. I F’G HATE PEOPLE WHO MURDER THESE BLESSED ANIMALS WHO TRUSTED THEM. FLAVIA, WORDS CAN’T DESCRIBE MY FEELING OF HORROR FOR THEM AND WISH i OWNED 100K ACRES THEY COULD LIVE OUT THEIR LIVES WITH LOVING PEOPLE WHO’LL ALMOST MAKE THEM FORGET THE DESPICABLE, SHAMELESS AND COWARDLY ACTS OF THEIR OWNERS. This hits close to home because I found my beloved Tennessee Walker by good fortune only to learn his owner took him and others to auction fully expected my Mane Mane would be brutally murdered and make into dog food! My God, why have you forsaken them?

    • Tears. We keep up with all we can possibly do and that is the right thing to do. So gratifying to save what we can. No wonder we love animals more than people most of the time.

  33. People suck! What more can I say! All I can do is cry and pray for those beautiful furry souls that I wish I had the ability to take all of them! God will punish the inhumane! As we all know God/Dog

  34. I hate Humans anymore. These POS should all be put in a system to never be able to own another pet ever again. Humanity has gone to Hell.

  35. If you are going to own any pet, then you take care of them ill the end… I just lost my fur baby Lucy from cancer i had her for 11 years, I would give anything to have her back… How dare these people do these animals this way.. If and when I go out of town i take my animals with me.. These people should never be allow to own another animal, I would like to put these assholes in one of those cages..

  36. I wish for them owners nothing but pain and sorrow. They are not human they are bunch of fucking shape shifiting demons.

  37. Wow I can’t believe almost everyone of you simply just believe everything that’s put in front of your noses to read… and from the Internet no less, the most creditable source of anymond of news. Hahaha. In this time and age of hoax celebrity deaths, fraud and numerous other computer created bullshit made just to cause an uproar for a reaction. But good to see how much you all love pets so much, so much you’re all just sitting at your computers typing up these angry storms rather than going out and actually doing something to help. Duh. Then you could find out what exactly is actually going on truthfully with this story…

    • And yet you are here at your computer typing, criticizing this “computer created bullshit” Joe. Why are you not out doing something constructive? Duh?

    • You don’t know what you are talking about. Just about every poster here is involved with rescue in some way, we’ve been to the shelters, we know the employees, we have rescues at home that we own or foster – YOU are the ignoramous without a clue. Get out in the world and you will find this is exactly right.

  38. I have a 19 year old dog. She is my life! I don’t know how people can do this to their pets.I have rescued many animals because people just want to get rid of them and found them great homes. I see this stuff on craiglist people getting rid of animals just because they are old! Makes me sick! And the excuses they make is sicker! Its like getting rid of your child! So wrong! Dogs have feelings! Cats have feelings! Wake up people! Just because animals speak a different language doesn’t mean they don’t know whats going on!

  39. I am SICK of the Human Race that Surrenders their Pets to a Animal Shelter. I Guess they Don’t know that Pets are Family. Not to be Surrendered. I Hope and Pray that KARMA Comes and Gets You Low Lifers. You Don’t need another Pet for Life.

  40. ARE THEY CRAZY???!! For the price of a couple of cases of beer (which I’m sure will flow freely at most of their homes) they could BOARD the animal !!!!!!! – and then reclaim after the fireworks– OR they could put their animal in a room with the radio or TV on and their bed and toys and calming pheromones. WTH is WRONG with Humans? The word Man”KIND” is truly an OXYMORON!!!!!

  41. NOT TRUE!! This was a line up for a wellness clinic. It is not uncommon for shelters to offer such clinics for the community.

Media again misrepresenting and manipulating the news.

    • You are incorrect. Spoke with BARC … it is an open admission shelter which means anyone can drop off a pet. Of the 26,000 dogs and cats taken in annually, 20% die which adds up to the startling amount of 5,200 dogs and cats; much too much so let’s not make light of irresponsible people dropping off their pets. Direct quote from BARCS; “This brings me to the question regarding the wellness and intake line. The line in the photo includes both wellness and intake customers. We had 57 wellness and foster customers today. Most of those customers came through our front entrance. I hope this helps clarify some of the questions in this post and sheds light on what BARC is truly working toward!”

So do the math… 26,000 dogs and cats annually divided by 365 days in a year assuming the shelter is open everyday, that comes out to 71.2 pets coming in daily. How many of them are surrenders, abandoned, cruelty. The entire premise is to spay and neuter and be a responsible pet parent.

  42. Sometimes there are reasons why someone would have to give up their pet/s, financial situations come up. health issues, becoming homeless, but just because of inconvenience, that is just wrong. At least try to find a rescue, there many out there. Most people believe that someone else will adopt their pet, they need to put a big sign on the door, THINK TWICE,
SURRENDERED PETS CAN BE PUT DOWN THE SAME DAY YOU DROP THEM OFF.

  43. This is heartbreaking! Can someone please leave the shelter’s info on here? Maybe there are more people willing to adopt them before they are killed. I would be happy to adopt.

  44. Many of the people posting here can thank yourselves and others with like minds for this outcome. Only 5% of shelter dogs are purpose bred dogs according to research, yet you lie and tell people that if you somehow stop purbred dog breeding that mixes will stop showing up at shelters. Purpose bred, PUREBRED dogs are the LEAST LIKELY to lose their original homes according to research, because it is much easier to match breed traits with owner lifestyles, yet you lie and tell people that the majority of the shelter dogs ‘just need love’ to be just as awesome and well suited as a purbred dog. Although there are for sure some that are good dogs, in the majority of cases the same owners irresponsible enough to drop their dogs off at shelters due to inconvenience, also never spent the time to effectivly housebreak (number one reason for adult dog abandonment according to research) train, socialize or instruct their pets. Your solution? Demonize purebred dog breeders and focus on eliminating that 5%. Plus, with your ‘adopt don’t shop’ mantra, YOU inadvertently teach people to think that an unwanted dog is best processed through a shelter, and to reinforce that outcome you attack any possible avenue of relief other than a shelter by demanding restrictions on advertising for pets. Now even Facebook has joined Craigslist in the insain belief that if it is difficult for buyers and sellers of pets to connect that those potential buyers will magically morph into potential adopters and will be funnelled to the recieving end of mass drop offs like this one. Anyone with any reasoning ability will understand that John Smith looking for a Pug, or Jane Doe looking for a Sheltie will not likely pop in at the local shelter to shell out their hard earned dollars for a Pitbull mix, but by banning pet ads that Pittbull mixes’ only hope lies in a select number of people who actually enter those shelter doors. The thousands of people who may have considered taking on a particular dog if they could have seen the ad and communicated directly with the original owner, will not be so persuaded seeing the same dog in the anonymity of a shelter. Congratulation all of you purebred haters, breeder haters, Craigslist flaggers and Facebook petitioners, this is YOUR baby!

    • You obviously are a disgruntled breeder, and/or spend absolutely zero time in shelters. I have SIX pure bred dogs at home, that came from kill shelters. I’ve seen pure-bred just about everything, in the shelter system. Especially little dogs like pugs, yorkies, pomeranians, chihuahuas, maltese, poodles, french bulldogs, usually turned in by groups rather than as single surrenders – and you can find them every single day if you look. Of the nine shelter dogs I have at home, ALL of them, were 100% housebroken, even the ones picked up as strays. My particular dogs are large breeds – Danes and Mastiffs – you see those too, all the time. Along with Huskies, German Shepherds, Labs, Retrievers, Hounds, Beagles, Dalmations – unless it’s a truly hard to find breed, it’s likely sitting in a shelter or a rescue somewhere. And I’ve not seen anyone demonizing responsible breeders here, it’s the puppy mills and backyard breeders the community wants to stop.

      • I agree with what you are saying. My husband and I have our fave breed: “rescued”!!!

Every year, since 1996, we have sponsored an animal blessing ceremony (and vegetarian brunch afterwards). All the catering staff wear t-shirts I designed showing a momma dog (or cat) with her babies & the slogan, “Don’t let litters become trash. Spay or neuter your pet”.
We have had hundreds of people attending each of our events (& lots of children). Hopefully the message is getting through…….

  45. I have two great pyrenees mixes and a german shepherd and my yard has less crap in it than this article does. If the people who were lined up for the vaccination clinic sue you for libel, I’ll laugh my ass off.

    • How odd that in the end they do not mention the best “cure” of all for unwanted animals populations….spay and neuter.

  46. I’m sitting at my desk, literally in tears because I know that’s exactly what each unwanted dog and cat is thinking when they’re tossed out like trash – wondering what they did wrong and why their family doesn’t want them anymore because they loved their family with everything they had in them only to be dumped and killed because they’re now an inconvenience. RIP to the dogs and cats who died because of their effed up humans.

  47. Many people oversimplify this problem and judge too quickly. It is a sad reality that many families have to choose between things like paying pet deposits or going homeless. We are a nation of renters right now very few people can afford to buy their own homes. Pet ownership is a harsher reality when you are a renter. Also it is simply a sad reality that many pets do truly become a heavy burden on people. High vet bills, high property damage, legal and financial liabilities, etc. We are a nation painfully strained by the horrific imbalance of financial means.

    • “Vacations and holiday celebrations are the most common reasons pets are surrendered at this time of year:” is the subject of this article, It has nothing to do with rent, or vet bills, or being homeless. I do agree with you that we are a nation of “horrific imbalance of financial means”.and indications are it isn’t going to get any better anytime soon, but that is a debate for another time and place.

  48. Every one of these sorry ass sons of a bitches should be kept track of and never allowed to own a pet ever again… even a freaking cockroach for a pet. Karma bus is gonna roll, and I sure hope I get to drive the damn thing right through their lives like a steam roller.

  49. I can’t even imagine doing anything bad to my dog or leaving her! These people are awful!!! Poor Animals if they are willing to dump them off imagine how they were treated when they where living with them. Breaks my heart!

  50. I really like animals although I have none due to allergies. If I did have one I would never mistreat it. I understand the frustration and anger of people on this post but I can’t help thinking about the thousands of humans that are suffering some due to no fault of their own. Animals are joyous pets but they cannot compare to human lives. We actually have dominion over them. I am glad they at least took them somewhere where they could be put to sleep peacefully and not left on the side of the road to be hit by a car or to be starved and abused. It’s a very sad situation but then again we do not know the whole story behind why they are turning in their pets.

  51. If you own a dog or cat you should be put on a register so if you abandon an animal in a field there is a record that you owned one and it wasn’t documented as stolen/lost/deceased.. If you dump your dog in a field or take them in to a shelter to dump, you shouldn’t be allowed to care for any animal ever again. Exceptions should be made for recent adoptions because sometimes a dog doesn’t mesh well with the other dogs/cats of the house. But after a certain time, no, you’re responsible like you would be with a human child.

  52. You people should all burn in HELL, look at you all, standing there, playing with your phones, your poor pups standing on the hot blacktop awaiting their deadly fate because they are “inconvenient” ….. You all suck and I hope on your way home every one of you crashes and burns in your cars. Yup, I said it and I pray you all loose sleep thinking “A needle will slide into their veins and they’ll slip away, wondering where their beloved human is and why they never came back.”

  53. Hopefully Karma will bite every one of them in the ass in the form of their own children doing the same to them when they get “old” and “burdensome.” After all, that’s what they’re teaching their children, right?

I’ll be home on 7/4 with my 2 senior dogs (16.5 and 13), senior cat (16), and grumpy old potbellied pig (13.5). And they will ALWAYS have a home with me, no matter how old they get or much work they cause.

  54. I am not a religious person, so I don’t pray. But after this I pray that the piece of shit owners have a miserable rest of their lives filled with poverty and sorrow and that they rot in the very bottom of hell. ????????????????????????

  55. There are many people that should be not able to own a pet, this is disgusting thank God there are many more people that love their pets! to those people all I can say Karma is a bitch!!!!

  56. Which shelter is this that is pictured in this article? Does this shelter automatically euthanize every animal that’s brought in or do they give the poor animals a chance to get adopted out? I feel so bad for shelter pets. All of my fur babies are from shelters. If I could I would save them all. There are a lot of really terrible people in this world, there are a lot of good people too, but unfortunately there are more bad people than good. Seems like a losing battle. All we can do is adopt, donate, put these stories out there, and try to educate people on how to help. My heart breaks for every animal who has to go through abandonment, cruelty….neglect.

  57. The title to this article is misleading not true because of the 4th of July. This is a line of all pets that are being surrendered everyday!!!!

  58. inject the bloody moron owners this is absolutely disgusting, all these people should be banned form ever owning pets, many put them down because they want a younger pet, will the also put their parents down when to old, god I hate you sick bastards

  59. The most important thing is that these assholes have a mobile phone and snapchat or instagram. Why waste money on animal when they can get the latest phone?

  60. Dogs and cats are gross, there are too many of them, and they aren’t the only animals people keep as pets. But, they still get all the attention. Disgusting.

  61. If this is something that typically happens a lot then why don’t these shelters refuse to take all these pets? There should be some kind of option in place to prevent these heartless slugs from just dumping their poor animals.

  62. Tout s’est irresponsables devraient être sur le fichier des assassins d’animaux et ne devraient jamais plus posséder d’animaux.
    Tous des parasites, des barbares.

  63. humans are the worst animals on this planet, by neglecting there pets and throwing them away like a trash, the karma will come around to these owners.
