Heartbreaking: Abandoned and matted little dog rescued

When a six-year-old  abandoned Lhaso Apso was found wandering the streets of Leeds earlier this month, rescuers were horrified when they discovered the dog was so matted his leg stuck to his ear. Indeed, the pup’s leg fused to his ear and the matting was so severe and painful, his coat started to peelaway from his skin.

According to the Daily Mail,  dog warden, Harriet Chaplin, who alerted the RSPCA about the dog dubbed Soldier had never seen an animal so neglected:

“The dog was matted like no dog I had ever seen before. The mats were so bad they were pulling his skin off around the eye and his front leg was matted to his ear,” Chaplin reported. “I believe he was either dumped in this area or has come from a home nearby as I don’t think he could have wandered far in his state.”

And so Soldier found his angels at Dogs Trust Leeds who began the difficult task of easing the dog’s pain and making him comfortable. Rescuers were not able to figure out his breed when they first saw him – like where was his tail? Obviously not groomed for many months, the staff had to anesthetize him to cut away his coat without pain. Manager of the Dogs Trust, Amanda Sands has been rescuing animals for 30 years and stated she had never seen anything so “horrific and heartbreaking.”

“We really didn’t know if he was going to make it but we are relieved to say he has started to eat and we are hoping that he will continue to improve, but it is very early days,” Amanda stated.

Soldier is now being cared for in a foster home. Anyone who might recognize this little dog is asked to contact 0300.123.8018. Doesn’t he deserve justice?

  1. Months since his last grooming,HA! I think it has been years! Soldier on Soldier, live will get better for you now!

    • I meant, LIFE will get better for you now! May you find a new forever home that will pamper you and treat you with love and kisses and especially hugs!

  2. So where did this dog come from? Where has he been and who is responsible for his condition! I’m glad Soldier is safe now and getting the care he needs, but someone needs to be charged with neglect!

  3. Whoever allowed this poor dog to get in such horrific condition deserves a trip through the wood chipper – that little dog must have been in such pain for years and left to suffer. THANK GOD for Dogs Trust Leeds was there for him and not RSPCA – they would have done nothing as usual. I hope Solider gets the safe loving home he never had.

  4. Some people are just pure evil and heartless. This poor dog must have suffered a great deal. Solider you’re safe now and I hope you get a loving family.

  5. Poor soldier! This is one of the worst cases of neglect I have ever seen and I monitor plenty. Horrific and hope they find the responsible party. Prayers to soldier and glad he is groomed up and in a safe foster home.
