If you have traveled to Key West, Florida, you have undoubtedly seen the area’s iconic “gypsy chickens” which roam freely through the area. With Hurricane Irma destined to slam into Key West in less than 24 hours, what has happened to these birds?

At least some of them have been whisked away to safety. On September 6, the Facebook page for Key West Finest posted a photo of bundled chickens which were evacuated.

To those worried about the manner in which the birds are wrapped up, no worries. One person, a chicken owner herself, commented on the post and assured concerned animal lovers that this is a safe and effective way to transport the birds.

    • I’m glad they are supposedly safe, but transporting them this way didn’t look right to me either. However, I don’t pretend to be a chicken expert on how to ship live chickens.

  1. I have had a few chickens in the past, and I think if you don’t have cages to put them in wrapping them like this keeps them from flapping around in her car. Chickens stay calm when you hold their wings close to their body that is how I held my chickens when I held them.

  2. MY grandfather used to TRANSPORT HOMMING PIGEON”S that way for the US ARMY in WW II they were also wrapped like that at times when shipped on rail cars…
