In Southfield, Michigan, it was a bittersweet Mother’s Day for a German shepherd dumped in the city and in active labor. All alone on Saturday, the dog began to deliver her puppies. Two dead newborns laid beside her when a Good Samaritan found the dogs; she called and brought the dog to the Southfield Police Department. According to WxyzNews, it was the kindness and compassion of Southfield Police Officer Bob White, who rushed the mother dog to the veterinarian while she was still in labor.

When the veterinarian called Almost Home-NO KILL Shelter, the mother dog had one surviving puppy, however she had been so distraught, the newborn was unable to nurse. Named Nevie with her tiny puppy Nolan, both dogs needed rescue:

“We searched for a foster. Poor beautiful Nevie only had one living puppy left. She needs the warmth and love as only a loving home could provide. Beth our loving foster came through. Nevie appears to be in shock. She is displaying a sense of depression we have never experienced. She will need a lot of support,” reported the organization on their Facebook update.

Maybe the mystical powers of “Mother’s Day” motivated the beautiful shepherd to bond with her puppy. On Sunday, the happy announcement came:

“Our sweet Mommy Nevie is now bonding with her little baby. She is feeding Noland who is actually Natalie. Foster mom Beth did everything she could to comfort Nevie and give her confidence. She is now nursing her baby!”

The new family will be scheduled for a complete physical on Monday; both will have all that they need including vaccines, testing and well-care until the puppy is ready to be weaned, spayed and made available for adoption. For now on it’s a “happily ever story” for Nevie and Natalie.

  2. People can be the cruelest beings in existance! I’m so so happy this mama and her remaining baby are now in safe hands! God bless Nevie and Natalie!

  3. For MANY of US our LITTLE 4 legged families are ALL that we have… My Second Husband of over 23 years… so gracious He will get a card and gift every year from ( HIM and the little ones) this year a YETI-mint green tall drink container I can haul around with me for ice tea!!! We both laugh at how the boys and girls gather around as IF they are aware of the occasion !!! I hope these two can find a home where they too can become the Loved and Cherished members of a family WHO needs a family to complete their lives TOO!!!

  4. I’m so sorry your first set of people didn’t realize how special you are and dumped you when you needed them the most. Soon little momma you and your baby will be ready to have your real people come for, and they will gorgeous they will. Enjoy your new life..not all people suck.

  5. She looks purebred. What is she doing alone on the streets? Could someone be looking for her? RIP to the pups that didn’t get a chance at the life awaiting them.

  6. Whoever or rather WHATEVER cruel individual dumped this poor dog to fend for herself while in labor deserves to be nailed to a tree and used as target practice. THANK GOD for Officer Bob White and foster Mom Beth – you saved two lives – this story infuriates me – I truly hope both Nevie & Natalie get the safe loving homes they never had.
