When a photo of Otis the brave dog who lives in Sinton, Texas – practically a boot’s throw from Corpus Christi, took it upon himself to survive the ravages of Hurricane Harvey,  went viral, the dog’s determined spirit just proved the “when the going gets tough in Texas, the tough get going.

Now if you’re wondering how this awe inspiring photo came about, let’s go back to Saturday morning when Tiele Dockens had been inspecting damage in her neighborhood and spotted Otis. There he was – strolling down  the residential street carrying his bag of dog food. At times like this, does one say “bad dog” or “good dog”? Read on to get a few more details. And so – Tiele posted the photo to her Facebook page with the following description:

“This dog is walking around Sinton TX carrying an entire bag of dog food with him. LOL,” Tiele posted – adding the hashtag “#refugee.

PSA: Owner is found. He is not a stray he just got out on his street.
Dogs name is Otis.”

There have been hundreds of comments about this viral photo, but what stands out the most are people affirming that tough nature of Texans. We know you won’t give up, and many of us are trying to help.

Wondering who Otis belongs to I’ll bet? According to the Houston Chronicle, Otis, a German shepherd mix, belongs to Salvador Segovia’s five-year-old grandson. Segovia noticed the dog missing on Saturday morning and went driving around the area looking for him. It was a neighbor who flagged down Otis’ family and said they had just seen the dog carting his dog food – onto higher ground – maybe?

“Otis is an all around special dog,” Segovia said. “He’s been instrumental in helping comfort Carter following numerous hospital visits for seizures and asthma. Otis is also a local celebrity,” which earns the perky pooch some cool privileges as well as delightful treats.

“Otis can go to Dairy Queen and he can get a hamburger. He’s the only dog allowed to lie down in front of the county court house,” Segovia explained. “He also goes to H.E.B. He’s not a stray. He’s a good dog.”

Please volunteer and help our Texas neighbors. Whether it be rescuing, donating or sharing, make it a point to help someone from Texas today.

  1. Very smart dog and would like to think he is either carrying the bag of dog food to share with other dogs or possibly taking it to a safe spot away from more rain. A blessing he was located by his owner because he is a valuable dog for her grandson and the family. Local celebrity has earned that name.
