In South Texas, a German shepherd and his canine pal had been running loose along a busy expressway when both dogs wandered too far out into the highway. The German shepherd, Kal, suffered severe injuries; his pal died at the scene. An emergency plea went out on social media; Kal needed a miracle:

“EMERGENCY! German shepherd got hit by a car, killed his friend! He is back at his owners house with his eye out and in horrific condition. So many dogs are allowed to just roam the streets. The owner doesn’t have a car nor money to get him help! I cannot afford another ER bill so donations need to be called in before they start treatment… He might have a skull fracture, bleeding from his mouth, unable to stand and racing heart…”

In a 911 call to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC on Thursday afternoon, shortly after the accident, the advocate pleaded for help for Kal. Stacy Silverstein, co-founder of the non-profit rescue, who focus on providing emergency care and believe that no injured animal should lose their life simply due to lack of funds, arranged to have Kal transported to an emergency veterinarian in the area.

“Kal is in critical condition and has been rushed to the hospital. Right now he is in shock and paralyzed. We are hoping he will regain function now that he’s being treated,” Stacey explained on the organization’s Facebook page. “We don’t know if he will make it, but we won’t let him die without giving him everything medically possible. It’s not his fault he was left to roam aimlessly.”

Kal’s trauma includes a crushed eye and punctured lung. Although his condition improved slightly over night, unfortunately the dog also suffers from severe tick disease and heartworms. On Friday afternoon, it was decided that his eye would have to be removed if Kal was to have a chance to survive. In order to build him up in preparation for surgery, he has been administered a blood transfusion containing extra blood platelets to combat his low blood count as a result of the tick disease.

“We know it’s risky,” admitted Stacey to Pet Rescue Report, “but he deserves a chance to live, and this surgery is his best chance at survival. We ask that anyone who does not support efforts to save this dog, please leave our page. We will absolutely not tolerate any negativity when it comes to doing everything medically possible to save Kal’s life and taking the advice of the medical staff at the veterinarian hospital.”

  1. You are in my thoughts and prayers Kal. I wish that i could donate to help you get better but i am benefits so i can’t i am so sorry Kal that this has happened to you. Please get better soon

  2. If you can’t afford to pay the medical bills for your dog then you have no business being a pet owner. Furthermore, it’s your fault that Kal got hit by a car on the expressway. Why was the dog running around loose? I hope you live with guilt for the rest of your sorry life. Thank you Rescue Dogs Rock for stepping in and provide this poor pup the medical attention he so desperately needs. I’m sorry Kal’s pal got killed. RIP pup, now you’re free and can roam all you want. What happened to the owner of the deceased dog? My prayers go out to Kal for a speedy recovery.

    • Helen – you are absolutely 100% right – this piss poor example of an ‘owner’ is totally responsible for Kal sustaining horrific injuries – they should be in jail for their crappy attitude – and again if it weren’t for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC this poor animal would be sitting in a hell hole shelter suffering until they put him down.

  3. Please use all the resources you have to save this dog, he deserves every chance to live! Thank you for all that you do!

  4. I have a list of places who pay for emergencies like this. Please send me text number so I can forward list to you.
