Update: Aqua only has to the end of Monday to be rescued or she will be euthanized. Please share her story again.

At Orange County Animal Services in Orlando,  Florida, volunteers regularly interact with the shelter dogs in order to improve their chances for adoption. While most of the time, the dogs’ past lives are literally unknown, their behavior at the shelter often reveals a lot of their story. And on Saturday, volunteer Cris Ferreira Reed discovered the unexpected about Aqua, a frightened shelter pup desperately in need of a home, who just needed to hear the words, “your’e a good girl.”

“Yesterday I met a fearful dog,” Cris began. “Aqua is housed at the very last kennel. She was already out in the yard with my friends. Her posture was rigid and no eye contact. We couldn’t even get a good picture of her.”

At a time where many volunteers would be afraid of a scared dog’s reactions, and at times rightfully so, Cris just refused to give up. Something inside of her heart told her there was more to this lost soul.

“Then we sat on the ground,” Cris continued. “I pulled her close to me and held her face and told her softly what a good girl she was… She melted and turned into a completely different dog. She was loving, she enjoyed belly rubs, and her fear faded away. Dogs like her renew my passion for shelter dogs; for those that deserve a second chance for rescue. Aqua is that kind of dog.”

  1. It shows what a kind word can do for these frightened dogs. Thank you for not giving up on her, here’s hoping she finds her forever after.

  2. Most dogs just need a little kindness from us and they forgive us no matter what other humans put them through. They give humans MANY chances; they are so forgiving. Certainly this girl deserves a second chance. I see all these dogs I fall in love with but they are all the way in cali and I am in the Deep South. I pray this dog gets plenty “good girls” and love in the future!Someone in Cali get her out of there!!!

  3. Thank you Cris for seeing Aqua for what she really is – a sweet loving dog – she deserves her forever home and hopefully there is someone out there who will give this to her.
