In an emergency rescue by Trio Animal Foundation from a Chicago city shelter, a four-pound, emaciated dog, who had been blinded by her matted fur over her face, soaked in her own urine and too weak to stand, was rushed to the organization’s partner veterinarian. In order for the medical team to fully assess the dog’s condition, she was immediately shaved down, and although everyone knew the little Shih Tzu dubbed Liz, had been terribly starved, just that she still survived in that condition, defied logic.Liz Trio cover 2

After several hours at the emergency veterinary hospital on Monday, Liz’s body temperature finally began to register. The four-pound emaciated dog, who  should have weighed from 10 to 12 pounds, radiographs, blood tests and physical exams determined Liz couldn’t stand because she had been starved and her muscles had atrophied. She was started on intravenous fluids and given small pieces of chicken – the tiny dog was ravenous.Liz trio cover 3

As is prudent for dogs that have been starved, only small, frequent meals have been offered, and the plan is to slowly increase her diet. Because she is in such deplorable condition, Liz’s age can not be determined; her teeth have suffered from extreme neglect. By Wednesday however, with a little help from her doctor and when placed on a rubber mat, Liz was able to hold herself up for a few minutes. Still very weak from starvation, she will need to gain weight to regain her strength and muscle mass in order to stand and walk again.

On Thursday, Liz’s condition scared everyone. On the organization’s Facebook, the little dog who could- almost didn’t. For a moment, her rescuers held their breath:

“We had a scare with Liz last night as her heart rate spiked for some reason. Luckily, since she is still hospitalized at the ER Vet, they were immediately made aware of it. After much worrying and praying, we went to spend time with her last night around 9:30. At that point, her heart rate was back to normal, and she was resting comfortable. Liz’s medical team is not sure why this episode happened, but she will continue to stay hospitalized at the ER Vet until she is stable.”Liz Trio 3

As to whom is responsible, no one knows, however this is an egregious case of animal abuse, neglect and torture. Tragically Liz’s owner is not known; the person who brought her into the Chicago shelter was not the responsible party. Be the voice for those who cannot speak. Surely someone had to have seen the condition of this dog before she was brought to the shelter barely hanging onto life. Look around, be observant, and if you suspect any animal being mistreated, call animal control, the police, the nearest shelter or a rescue organization. What happened to Liz didn’t occur overnight.Liz Trio now

Trio Animal Foundation is asking for help in sponsoring Liz’s medical bills which are expected to be astronomical. Tax-deductible donations can be made by clicking here. Please earmark your donation “Liz.”

  1. Unbelieveable… how can any human do this to a living being? To just stand there watching an innocent being suffer, starve, grow weak…. I’m sure cry out in agony is beyond words. It goes far beyond understanding !!! I’m so thankful she was found and is receiving the much needed medical treatment. Again, I simply can not understand. My prayers are with her, for a complete and hopefully quick recovery. She is adorable and has a great/strong will to live. It’s beyond any comprehension any of us hold to begin to understand the pain and suffering she was forced to endure. Thank you from the depths of my soul for reaching out helping her. I have donated what I could to help with her medical and housing/boarding costs, I’m sorry it couldn’t be much more. Please keep me/us updated on her condition/recovery status. Give her love, cuddles, and respect from the Patton family in San Diego, California.
    Bless you for helping her…

  2. This is sad that again another ass of a human did this to this poor soul. I hope they find him/her and really charge them with animal cruelty. Sending prayers for her recovery. Sharing.

  3. I can hardly look at her and breathe. I hope she has enough “fight” in her to win this battle of starvation. I pray her organs hold on. Asking our good Lord to reach down and give her his healing touch. The tears are flowing.

  4. I hope that those who are responsible for the torture of this poor sweet innocent baby and those who stood by and did nothing die a slow painful death and rot in hell for eternity.

  6. There is no excuse for this poor baby to be starved like this . People who mistreat animals are not worth the air that they breathe . We need to enforce tougher laws on animal cruelty . We need to be the voice of those who can’t be the voice for themselves . I hope that these kinds of people burn in hell.

  7. This is beyond comprehension!!! Our society
has become so emotionally sick when it comes
to human life! So many people cop out and
say it is not my problem when they see animals
    suffering, children suffering, homeless suffering
and the list goes on! What has happen to our
    moral compass??? Our neighborhoods are
broken and our families are broken!!! And so,
little Liz is paying the price!!! Thank God there
are some people left like your group who still
care and want to do all that you can to help
these precious lost souls!!! Thank You!!!
How can I donate so the funds go toward
Liz’s care? Bless you for your compassion!!!

  8. Poor Baby. I hope she will be ok and become the strong lady she deserves to be. I hope you find who did this to this poor baby, and Prosecute them.
