Shelter is full, unwanted pets will be put down
Spread the love

For the first time in over three years, an animal shelter in Arkansas has had to create a “list” of unwanted pets to be put down. The sad situation is the result of a huge influx of animals being taken in and not enough animals being adopted.

In a Facebook post made this week, the situation facing the Jacksonville AR Animal Shelter is explained:

It’s been 3.5 years since we had to euthanize for space
But with the high intake of dogs and cats, we are having to make ‘the list’ today😒
All areas are full and there is no space for any new dogs that will come in today
Last week we took in 25 dogs and only 4 were claimed by their owners
It seems no matter how hard we try to adopt out animals….you can’t fight the high amount of animals that come in on a daily basis!
Please share!

Jacksonville Friends of the Animals is trying to help prevent dogs and cats from losing their lives. On Tuesday morning, the group wrote:

We are full again 😔. The only way we can do free adoptions is when we have enough donations. The city does NOT pay!! We pay for all the vet care for the dogs and cats in our shelter including heart worm treatment at almost $400 per dog. PLEASE HELP. Please share, adopt, or donate!! You can click on the donate button near the cover photo or go to www.jacksonvillefriendsoftheanimals.org. Thank you!

The precious souls who are being held at this shelter have done nothing wrong – they were born and now they are unwanted. Please share this information and help find these homeless pets find a safe haven.

The Jacksonville Friends of the Animals, Inc, is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization that raises money to help the animals at the Jacksonville Animal Shelter. We pay for medical treatment not included in the city budget such as heartworm treatment, injuries and amputations (car accidents, etc.), illness such as parvovirus, skin conditions (mange and allergies), and cases of extreme abuse and neglect. We also help with the cost of spay/neuter, and for vaccinations. Our goal is to give every animal in our shelter a chance of a long, happy, and healthy life. Our mission is to make our shelter a true no-kill shelter (no euthanizing an animal for space while keeping our doors open for those who need us.) With your help, we can do it!

  1. These Dogs don’t need to be Put Down. Have some Compassion. This is why I Hate Shelters. The Stupid Owners of these Dogs should be Fined. Please Spay and Neuter your Animals Also Have your Dogs Micro Chipped. The Only Time my Dog was in a Shelter in Parker, AZ was when I had a Medical Emergency. Had Blood Clot in my Left Leg.

    • John, help me understand why you hate shelters….I don’t see it as a shelter problem, it’s a human/public/community problem…not enough people spay/neuter, local governments barely fund, if they fund at all, animal shelters, local governments have few if any regulations/laws requiring registration/spay/neuter and stray/roaming laws regulations and even if they do rarely do they enforce them…this is all true where I live and I hear it all over the country….backyard breeders purposefully breeding their dogs, including mutts, so they can “make some money”…..again, no regulations, no taxing them on this, no nothing…..so I don’t see this as a shelter problem, I see it as a community problem….please help me understand why you hate shelters….at least when these people are “done” with their dog, or “have to get rid of it now”, there is a place they can be taken vs being dumped on the street…which by the way is trending upward now that all these shelters are more focused on being “NO KILL” vs insuring pets aren’t dumped when their owners, whether for valid or invalid reason “have to get rid of them now”. They now are saying they are doing “managed intake”…..really….how do you do that….well I’ll tell you….they turn people away….they tell people they are full and just keep that pet for 7 to 10 days until a space opens up, or try this or try that…it’s ridiculous….people drive down the road and dump their pets…..now the dog/cat etc has to fend for itself…find food, water, shelter…..hoping some predator, wildlife or human, doesn’t harm it or get hit by a car or any number of horrible things….I simply do n to see it as a shelter problem….although I do see this whole “no Kill drive causing more problems…..and don’t get me wrong…I love animals….and don’t want to see them humanely euthanised, but I prefer they receive a humane euthanasia to being dumped and ending up suffering many dangers…the least of which is fear and not understanding why they are now abandoned…..we humans are a mess….if only we were more like animals…..

  2. Maybe the shelter could run a half price adoption fee once or twice a year as well as join in on the clear the shelter day

  3. It’s not the shelters fault. They did not create this problem. Irresponsible pet owners did this. I hope the shelter can find rescues or fosters for the animals. New York city animal care and control makes a “List” every day.

  4. Maybe someone could arrange a “flight to freedom”? Fly them to a part of the country where they could be adopted much quicker?????

  6. This is not acceptable, to put down healthy animals makes no sense! The need to implement spay and neuter programs is now imperative! Don’t let these little ones have to die here! They have a right to know what it is to be loved and cared for!

  7. consider other possibilities for solutions. Outreach to the community. Organizations that need therapy and companion dogs.

    • Eleanor, are you willing to take in one or more? Do you volunteer at your local shelter, do you donate to spay/neuter programs in your community? Do you push your local government officials to fund spay/neuter, animal shelters? This is not a shelter problem…it is a community problem….and until the community expresses as much outrage at their local government and community as they do with shelters it will not change…we all need to look in the mirror and ask what we have done to improve this community problem….until we all do something…the animals will continue to be the ones that suffer…..not being mean or hateful…it is simply the facts…..spay/neuter, spay/neuter, spay/neuter….adopt don’t shop, adopt don’t shop….volunteer, donate, volunteer donate….push your local government for tougher laws/regulations and make them enforce them….stop backyard breeding, I could go on and on……

      • Cheryl I must say I applaud ur comments!! Every single word is right on target, every single word is awesome and the absolute truth! Thank u for ur comments on this issue!!!!!!!

  8. Just wondering, when an animal gets picked up by the shelter and the owners come for it, is the animal spayed or neutered before the owner can have it back? Vets should spay and neuter at a very low price for this.

    • It depends on the law in each state and community….and not all vets are willing and able to donate their time and practice supplies and staff to do low price spay/neuter…..but, you could urge and encourage your city/county/local government to fund a vet and vet tech plus supplies to do the spay/neuter and cover most of the cost….or donate to your shelter or to a local spay/neuter program, don’t have one, you could help start one….most shelters receive little to no funding from local governments and depend on donations….it seems many people don’t understand this….it is a community problem and the community needs to step up…support your local shelter and push your local government to adequately fund a shelter and implement tough animal laws that support spay/neuter, and discourage backyard breeding, strays, adoption over purchasing pets…..if everyone would get out in their community and push things could improve for the animals…but if you are waiting for your local gov’t to do it, it won’t happen…..be the voice of the animals….do something…volunteer, donate either time or money, push for gov’t funding at the local level, push for tougher registration and spay/neuter laws…..but do something….and while the internet is a great tool…just expressing outrage online does NOTHING to help the animals.

      • Cheryl, I’m sensing your frustration and I’m applauding your common sense and advocacy for the animals and shelters; there doesn’t seem to be any quick solution because as quickly as 1 animal is put to sleep to make room in shelters, 3 or 4 more become homeless. Public awareness, education, community agency partnerships, shaming public officials, following best practices which have worked in other locations adapted to our communities, are all essential, in my opinion, to make positive gains in this epic dilemma. Keep speaking out-you’re wonderful!

  9. People blame, the owners in that community, what the fuck are these owners, doing, cleaning out their homes. These idiots have no heart, look at the condition of these pups. Sending prayers, and sharing thru tweeter and facebook.

  10. i just don’t understand why these shelters don’t reach out to other shelters across the country! I know of ones who will have dogs shipped to another shelter so it isn’t killed just because they don’t HAVE ROOM ! Yes if you want to own an animal you have to take care of it ,vet visits, shots it is expensive ,but they didn’t ask for,it . It’s humans that just think they can dump their dog or cats on the streets and not think twice of what they just did ! The older I am getting I hate being around humans . I always wanted to have a farm where I could take in stray animals .its a dream that haven’t come true yet !????????????

  11. Can you give an update what happened to these animals? I don’t understand why someone will adopt and them surrender their friends just like garbage. ????????????

  12. Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890): “The cruelty to animals is like a man does not have love for God … They do not make us evil, they have no power to resist … there is something scary, so satanic in the abuse of those who have never hurt us and who can not be defended, who are completely in our power … “
