Two pregnant German shepherds, one who was in the midst of delivering her puppies, were killed in a devastating fire which tore through a Saco, Maine, breeder’s training barn on Thursday morning. According to the Press Herald, Doreen Metcalf, owner of Timber Ridge Farm, tried to free the dogs, but the smoke in the area of the two pregnant shepherds was too thick, and she was unable to save them.

After the deadly blaze, a Facebook post was made to followers of Timber Ridge Farm:

Today TR and the world lost two beautiful, intelligent, sweet girls. Vera (sable) and Atte (black). The dog training building burned, and although Doreen worked to get all of her dogs safe, these two were overcome by smoke inhalation. We love these two girls so much and we will miss them every day for the rest of our lives. We thought our hearts had broken at the loss of Uhdelle in November. It turns out that a heart is one of those things that can repeatedly break.

According to WGME News, it took firefighters over an hour to bring the fire under control; the training barn was completely destroyed. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation – it is not considered to be suspicious.

The same breeding facility faced tragedy in November 2016 when one of their dogs, a female named “Uhdelle,” was stolen and then dumped away from the breeder’s property. The dog, who was said to be “terrified” and running for hours, was then struck and killed by a car. Read the heartbreaking story at this link.

  1. Rest in peace Vera and Atte, I can’t imagine the horror watching them perish in this barn fire.So very sorry for your loss.

  2. Fire is the only that scares me in regards to all my animals! That’s why all 4 of my barns are fitted with sprinklers and my barns are concrete not wood! I feel for the lady who lost two of her dogs but I would have used a towel to cover my nose and mouth so I could get them out!

  3. Why, why, why are some people so intent on hurting the helpless? I cannot image the mindset that could do this kind of abuse, and I would not want to imagine it. I hope there is a “reward” for those who, on purpose, make others suffer. It just breaks my heart.

    • What are you talking about? There is nothing here to say this was done intentionally, in fact the investigators are saying otherwise.

  4. Breeding should be banned (it wouldn’t stop it, but it would drastically cut it down, if it was properly enforced). Dogs should not be kept in barns in the first place. Sickening.
