Lost senior dog euthanized hours after being found by good Samaritan
Spread the love

A family in Genesee County, Michigan, is mourning the loss of their senior dog, who wandered away from home and was later picked up by a good Samaritan. The person who found the old dog, whose name was “Capone,” did what they thought was in the lost dog’s best interest, they transported Capone to the Genesee County Animal Control.

In a perfect world, the senior dog would have been safe at the animal control agency at least for a few days until his family could find him and bring him back home.

Tragically, Capone’s family didn’t have a chance to retrieve their dog because he was dead within hours of being taken in at the animal control agency. According to the For the Love of Louie *Michigan Lost Pet Lookers* Facebook page, Capone was euthanized just two short hours after being turned over to animal control.

The Facebook page posted about the devastating situation which left Capone dead and a family heartbroken:

He was wearing an orange harness. A clear sign that he was an “owned” dog. HIs owners were searching frantically for him and were relieved when they learned he was turned into Animal Control. Their joy quickly turned to devastation when they called Animal Control, they were informed that Capone was euthanized.

Exactly why Capone was denied his time under the mandatory stray hold at the animal control agency is a mystery. At this point, all that matters is that he is gone – before his time. Rest in peace Capone.

  1. Shelters have a lot of sick people who kill animals because they cannot legally kill people. Rest in heaven sweet boy, and may your killers rot in the fires of Hell.

  2. I’d like to know why they killed Capone and didn’t try to find his family! What is wrong with this picture? Certainly a dog with a harness on is someone’s pet!!!!! My condolences to his family, if it were me I would be looking into this and a law suit might be in order!

  3. I heard this story over and over ! These animal control personnel should be punished and fired! They get power mad and these poor animals suffer for it!

  4. That is terrible. I am so sorry this happened. The animal control should have waited. My condolences to this sweet pup’s family.

  5. Unbelievable, unacceptable, and no excuse for this to have happened! RIP Capone. You did not deserve a death sentence. I would like to know why.

  6. This is outrageous and so bloody wrong there should be a investigation on this ASAP. RIP Capone you didn’t deserve to be euthanized. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.

  7. This is utterly inexcusable! Capone was wearing a collar so they knew he had a family. They BROKE THE LAW by murdering him before the mandatory hold was up, and, again, they KNEW he had an owner.

So why would they kill a dog under those circumstances? Sounds to me like some sadistic people work at that ‘shelter’, and they need to be fired and jailed.

It also sounds like the family needs to sue the hell out of that place.

  8. My heart goes out to the family that lost their senior pup in this manner. The shelter owes the family an explanation and compensation for prematurely euthanizing Capone. While no amount of compensation will replace Capone, the shelter must know there are consequences for acting in such an irresponsible way. It doesn’t appear the shelter made any effort to locate Capone’s owner. Was Capone checked for id?
Rest in peace Capone……..now you are totally free.

  9. What THE HELL goes on here::: It is a damn good thing this was not ONE of my “canine family” THIS IS NOT ETHICAL !!! TWO DAMN HOURS HEADS WOULD BE ROLLING OVER THIS!!! FROM THE SHETER< MAYOR< COUNTY COMMISSIONERS THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER ALSO WOULD BE NOTIFIED>> this dog was not seriously injured, vicious , contagious, so WHY>> HIS FAMILY SHOULD have the benefits of the TAXES they MOST LIKELY PAY in ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!!! IT won’t bring their precious CAPONE BACK BUT it sure as hell will STOP this STUPID SHIT FROM happening again!!! I feel so sad for the family WHAT ONE TORRIFIC SHOCK!!!

  10. The head of the DIRECTOR ” would be rolling down the road to the unemployment office after MY LAWYER GOT DONE” and at this point I would not give one shit the cost of the lawyer because NEXT step I would file a suite against the county…. ASSHOLES THAT THEY ARE

  11. An investigation is needed. Perhaps even a lawsuit. This happens too often. It’s bad enough when it’s an unwanted dog, but when the dog is part of a family who is frantically looking for him, this is beyond wrong. I feel for the family. I can’t even imagine if something like this happened to me.

  12. Something is VERY wrong if an animal is not held for the mandatory stray hold period. Sadly for this family and their senior pet, nothing can undo the damage……..

Those POS’s who euthanized Capone against the shelter’s stray hold period policy deserve to burn in Hell forever for their cruelty……. wonder how many other animals were euthanized before their families could retrieve them???

RIP Capone. Sorry so many humans failed you.

  13. The folks that killed this families pet needs to give some answers. How many animals are put down because thats just what this place does. The word needs spread about town.

  14. Ill tell you why. it was euth day and they had the death techs in house that day and they needed someone to throw to these destructors. the orange harness didnt even register as an family pet!? Or his soft feet or being well fed? They know a stray from an indoor dog
I wonder how the good sam also feels? to think, if That person just left the dog alone the dog wouldhave went home himself and be sleeping with his owner.
    Tragic.

  15. This shelter thecperdon who ordered the euthanize should be investigated also pkease tryvto send updates

  16. Totally unacceptable. This AC and all parties including the head must be punished to the fullest extent of the law and beyond. Wonder how many dogs have lost their lives to their mistakes. RIP CAPONE. SO SORRY YOU WERE MURDERED. To Capone owners, do not let them get away with this

  17. This makes me SICK!!!! The Shelter or even the Person who Turned this Senior Dog didn’t even wait and see if anyone would claim Him. I Hope all the Staff at this Shelter gets Fired. Karma knows who you are. This is why my Senior Dog will be with me. I Bet they didn’t even check for a Chip.

  18. Whoever is in charge of this facility needs to lose their job!!!! This is unacceptable!!! I feel so bad for the dog. His last moments were in the hands of uncaring individuals not his family who loved him dearly. This needs to go viral People please share so this facility gets the punishment they have earned. So sad.

    • I WOULD LOVE to see one of those Petitions put one line that there be an IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION BY THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER”S and NOt ONLY RESTITUTION FOR THE LOSS OT THEIR ELDERLY PET< BUT PEOPLE HELD ACCOUNTABLE!!! this is out and out BULLSHIT!!!

      • The county commissioners are to blame for the way the shelter is run. It is one of the commissioners best buddies that is director

  19. This is not the first time I’ve heard that this happens. Shame on that shelter I swear sometimes bad shelters exist. You know like psychopaths working there who enjoy putting animals down! Sorry for your loss but those employees should be held responsible.

  20. The Genesee County Animal Control’s actions are deplorable, despicable and extremely cruel and criminal – TWO HOURS and they murdered a beloved family pet – the director of this hell hole should be held responsible and FIRED before this happens again. Capone deserved MUCH better from a facility that is SUPPOSED to be humane – there was nothing humane about what they did and this whole place needs to be investigated – I hope the family who lost Capone sue the pants off of this place.

  21. Les conditions dans lesquelles la pauvre âme à perdue la vie est illégal, je serai les maîtres, j’attaquerai le refuge en justice. Pas de pitié, ils n’en n’ont pas eu pour leur bébé.

  22. There is a lot of wrong doing at this shelter other than killing peoples pets. Millions were awarded in a mileage almost 3 years ago to remodel the shelter and replace tiny cages with runs. Nothing has been done except to hire a volunteer/rescue coordinator that does nothing but ban volunteers and Facebook stalks them all day. NO ONE will do anything. Commissioners and the local news have been alerted and still nothing has been done. All these greedy, corrupt, inept people need to lose their jobs.

    • there really DOES NEED A SERIOUS INVESTIGATION DONE>>> THER IS MORE THAN LIKELY MUCH MORE ABUSE AND KILLING GOING ON …. SOMEONE UP THERE NEEDS TO INFORM THE GOVERNOR AND A SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT>>> YA!!! WHERE DID THE MILAGE GO ERTTAINLY NOT FOR THE PETS needing assistance!!

  23. How evil this damn place was!!!!!!! What idiots that did this to their dog…..i would sue them!!!! They didn’t get a chance to say goodbye!!! Get a lawyer and see what you or rites are regarding this…..sounds like this place needs to be shut down………i am soooo sad.

  24. My question is: Can’t shelters be SUED after they do do this? I’d certainly sue them with all my might if they did this to my dog. I am a volunteer at the Miami Shelter, MDAS and it’s heartbreaking enough to see the owner surrender dogs at the kennels, the poor stray dogs whose families are either totally oblivious or do not care about them, or others who ignore and don’t know where to find their dogs. I’ve heard of very weird cases, they “hold” dogs for events when they could ave been rescued and they could have taken another dog to an event … anyway, People suck! If people were more responsible shelters and rescues would not be necessary. More education, way more education, is needed.

  25. My heart breaks for Capone’s family and the finder, who is also grieving. As a shelter volunteer in Livingston County AND an Admin on For the Love of Louie, I KNOW this shouldn’t have happened. SHAME ON YOU GENESEE COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL. I will make sure everyone I know is aware of what you did.

  26. Some of these shelters are kill happy and just take it upon themselves to change rules as they see fit…playing god. I am so sorry for the tragic end of their beloved pet at the hands of an incompetent /hateful shelter and I sure hope that they get to the bottom of why protocol was not followed and why they didn’t hold for the three days they were supposed to. They need to be held accountable. We have heard several stories like this recently, where people quickly go to claim their pals only to find out they have been euthanized prematurely. This is horrible and I pray for this family and I hope they have the strength to follow up and make sure this doesn’t continue to happen to others locally. Shameful shelter.

  27. This is simply horrible. I hope the family sues the pants off this shelter and has the person(s) responsible neutered They don’t belong reproducing any more morons like that
    .

  28. This is a shelter that’s drooling from the mouth to kill dogs! They broke the law and I would be suing the hell out of them! Maybe that would make them take heed to the rules that are in place for strays! This is unforgivable and inexcusable! RIP CAPONE THEY OUT AND OUT MURDERED THIS DOG!
