A Phoenix family will be allowed to adopt another dog after their newly “rescued” pet died on the way home from heat exhaustion. The young pit bull named Adler had just been adopted from the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control earlier this week. Adler collapsed and died after walking home with his new owner – approximately four miles away.

According to AzFamily, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control director Mary Martin admitted making the dog walk in the extreme heat of the day for an extensive amount of time was certainly stupid, but insists that provided with additional education and guidance, the family should be allowed to adopt another dog.

“We can help them be successful or we can shun them. I choose to help them be successful,” stated Martin.

That decision has caused an extreme reaction from the public with many advocates expressing their ire on social media. Martin says the incident brings forth a new awareness of the dangers of heat and dogs.  Shelter workers will now be asking prospective pet parents if they have a way to safely transport the animal home. Temperatures in Phoenix this week have been ranging from 99 to 110 degrees. Anyone living in areas of unbearable heat should exercise their pets early in the morning or late in the evening. Keep exercise periods brief, and make sure pets have cool water and a comfortable place to rest at all times. If a dog shows symptoms of heat fatigue, let them rest and confer with a licensed veterinarian. Here are the symptoms to watch for in extreme heat according to PetMD.

  • Panting
  • Dehydration
  • Excessive drooling (ptyalism)
  • Increased body temperature – above 103° F (39° C)
  • Reddened gums and moist tissues of the body
  • Production of only small amounts of urine or no urine
  • Sudden (acute) kidney failure
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Irregular heart beats
  • Shock
  • Stoppage of the heart and breathing (cardiopulmonary arrest)
  • Fluid build-up in the lungs; sudden breathing distress (tachypnea)
  • Blood-clotting disorder(s)
  • Vomiting blood (hematemesis)
  • Passage of blood in the bowel movement or stool
  • Black, tarry stools
  • Small, pinpoint areas of bleeding
  • Generalized (systemic) inflammatory response syndrome
  • Disease characterized by the breakdown of red-muscle tissue
  • Death of liver cells
  • Changes in mental status
  • Seizures
  • Muscle tremors
  • Wobbly, incoordinated or drunken gait or movement (ataxia)
  • Unconsciousness in which the dog cannot be stimulated to be awakened

What do you think? Should the family be permitted to adopt another dog?

  1. How horrible. RIP Adler. Who would even think of walking a dog in the heat for 4 miles?! Stupid, stupid and reckless!

    • somebody who wants a dog more than a car. and who them selves are no stranger to walking . an indian family

      • Walking a dog for 4 miles in the heat on a pavement is horrible! Shit I get so upset when I see owners on their bikes with their leashed dogs running beside them during the summer! My big mouth almost got me in trouble when I had words with such a bicyclist.

      • i got one of them also. iv seen him twice, but on my way to work. ive been trying to see if he does it at the same time every day. id like to know exactally where he lives. maybe a neighborly chat.
but that rarely works. im thinking of dropping a dime on him to sc aspca’s dt. roy gross and wondering if i will regreat it.

an old guy, on a bike with a dog trying to keep up.its hard to mind your own bizz when you see something misserable.

About the az people. its outrageous to a east coast person but i know this is the desart and they are wired differantally and they thenselves conduct their biz anytime of the day. I think the issue was no car . I think the shelter is partally at fault they must have been aware they were carless.

I think the outcome will be they will keeep an eye on the next dog and work with the community and perhaps do a well check on the animals in general and help with basic animal care and hope for the best.this is a whole differant culture an an extreamly harsh place to live for all creatures. but some how they live.

      • ellen when I adopted Elvis someone walked me to my car and bid him farewell. Not all shelters have this protocol. However, he was transported from the the south(TN) at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Ma. For 6 months (no kill shelter) I was surprised that no one had adopted him. He was a great dog! I’m assuming some shelters do not go through the major questions for one to quality to adopt.

  2. WTF????

If these dipshits were THAT IGNORANT – enough to cause the death of this hapless companion, Adler – WHY THE HELL would you allow them to put yet another creature at mortal risk???

That shelter deserves all the wrath their receiving!

I pity any poor creature that’s left in their “care”….

    • worked with Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Souix ,for over ten years. God what Horrific treatment their animals got from 94% . Ashland, Lame Deer, Crow, Gerryowen, lodgegrass

      • yes in an institution for the money.
clearly no love for them . dont paint your self like you have been available to help them as a trounced upon people. as you name drop tribe after tribe of mistreated people.
You and your kind wouldnt have them any other way.

      • actually,
Im sure you were a well respeted RN who most likely helped people and animals when no one was watching, and for that, I will give props where props is do. Either that or you were the scariest police man on the pierrier. I cant figure out wich one. dont tell me i want to guess.
You do have more then one gun thats for sure and I dont mean in the house theres lots I mean your guns not your husbands. You probebly know how to machine parts for them also.

      • ellen cottone, for some one who claims to be from the “sensitive younger generation” you say cruel, nasty things to people you don’t even know. Tell me what have YOU done for the down trodden American Indians lately? You have displayed you are NOT sensitive to anyone’s feelings and make mean hateful statements about people you don’t even know, then wonder why they disrespect you and your opinions!. Your attitude solidifies my belief that most of the “younger generation” is only into themselves and care nothing about others. You have displayed a heartless attitude more than once about poor animals that have been abused and like this one that needlessly died. You display compassion for these people that basically killed this poor dog and then go back for another like it is a piece of property that if destroyed can be replaced. Not one once of compassion for Adler who, had he not been allowed to leave with irresponsible people would be alive today! Leave pennysdachund alone! She has more integrity in her little finger and has helped more people and animals than you could ever fathom! I am sick of your vendetta against what you call us old bitter bitches. This BITCH has had ENOUGH!

      • That should be “one ounce”, my fingers sometimes don’t work properly when I am angry!

      • Ah, boo hoo barkly, if ya cant stand the heat get out the kitchen. and stop putting words in my mouth. i dont have to help any one because i dont immediately assume they are idiots like in your original post. i offered that someone local who was to poor to own a car. look at you carrying on like your innocent little victim, a cry baby is unbecoming. the reason you say youv had enough is because you know your wrong and repeatedly. as being sensitive just replace it with smarter and try not to let it get you down.
you haven’t had enough. its just time for you to play with the dogs they probably miss you like mine does as were wasting time annoying each other like a couple of kids.
ills see you at Pet rescue report tomorrow.
        until then,
        adios amiga!
I love how you stick up for Penny. Like she needs help from someone.

      • i have compassion for many things sometimes at the same time i believe in the redemption of humans up to a clear and broad line.
and i do not judge with out knowing all the facts. and i dont refer to you or anyone as bitches thats your bag. i would never be so senselessly cruel . you do not have any idea how i feel about Aldo because i will not wast the time sharing grief with strangers i do that in private and i have the appropriate personal rituals. but it would be great if another dog gets to leave the big house.and thats how i see it. i feel suffering as deep as anyone here but i dont see the point in wasting time with the pos owner routine, and its more productive getting another creature saved and making sure it cant happen again. real rescue means not wasting one more precious second on what is not important. and i live that every day of my life. all joking aside i hope you learned something here because i have.my days are numbered here maybe ill come back in a year to see if anything has changed for people and animals. I have too many projects on the home front and wasting alot of time on this guilty pleasure.

  3. So stupid , and unessary why the he’ll are they not facing charges? Did the dogs life mean nothing ? No more pets for them absolutely heart breaking

  4. You have got to be kidding! I have a dog who thinks he needs to run, not walk, and will do so until he literally collapses. His walking time and space have been SEVERELY curtailed because he will not stop and you can’t make him stop.

But 4 miles? That was insane to begin with! How did they fail to see the warning signs? If they’re that stupid in the first place, they should never be allowed to have a dog! If this shelter is going to let them have another dog, they’d better damn well do a THOROUGH home check and keep on doing so, because they’re liable to leave the poor dog they adopt outside without shade or water……..

  5. This is ridiculous! What kind of “human” idiots are walking 4 miles in that kind of heat, let alone adopting a pet and making him walk home in it? I can imagine the hot pavement on his paws to begin with! Yeah Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, you think may be you ask next time how they are getting their new pet home? Disgusting this beautiful dog lost his life like this and letting them adopt another unconscionable!

    • an impoverished navajo indian. who is trying to inprove the quality of his and his familys life. because they have love to spare and a humble home to share.
      That kind of “human” idiot.

      • Did ya miss the part where there is a reservation with in 4 miles. you made me verify when i did not feel like it. And for that I will never forgive you. BM from here on in sit back and enjoy the ride. or get the hell out of the way.
If ya can , try not to let me get under that bitchie old hide of yours.

if you are so offended by my flip, first thing that comes to my mind comments, then keep on walkin. Your just another common easly ruffled old lady that hates the fact that I have compassion for people and I know the differance between those who are worth a second chance and those who do not.
And i do have an uncanny ability to understand on a differant leval then you. you have attacted me other times only to find out in later updates that i was right. Just because you dont get it dosnt mean i dont.
        Sorry for your loss.

      • Good lord ellen cottone, why so hostile? Yes I did NOT see any reference to a reservation near by! And quite frankly, I do NOT remember ANY incidences where you were RIGHT except in YOUR own mind!

      • Sadly, a number of the rescues I network with are dedicated FULL-TIME to the intervention and rescue of hapless companions from native reservations in Minnesota and the Dakotas: Disheartening to witness how ignorance and poverty impacts the values of a nation of people whose very culture and religioun are based upon reverence and respect for the lives of all living beings (particularly, those in the animal kingdom), as some of the most heinous abuse and neglect cases originate from within those areas…

      • rezdogs,
there is no way for me to know if this is a case of an indian family, imhere on long island on the east coast. was this indeed an indian adopter, who is to poor to own the luxury of an air condition car?

      • Actually the Name “:Puff the Magic Dragon” He lived by the Sea in a land called Gallai! go look up the tunes they are 60’s at the time of Woodstock… I think you will find them quite entertaining !!! another Help me Rhonda..!!!! I am an oldie but a Goodie. I didn’t blow Smoke!!!!

      • pennysdachshund, she came up with all the “Navajo Indian” BS and then tells resqdogz that she is in “Long Island” so she has no way of knowing if this was even an American Indian family. Our “expert” makes up more than she knows and obviously has no inkling about American Indian culture at all! Of course she wouldn’t know what a Tom Tom was!

    • Don’t you hear the “Tom Tom’s ” beating ! Thump Thump Thump. Oh No actually it is the Heart and the lungs that are about to explode from the continuous stress on the internal organs, with no way to release heat from the body cavity with not having sweat glands. the Drums Again DUM! Dum! DUM! the trashing of the wings of an Eagle … Oh No that is the heart fluttering , and pulsating in an irregular rhythm as the poor over heated animal is struggling to keep going to please the family he so wanted in his life… Crash Gone!!! He is no more!!

      • Thank you pennysdachshund for putting in a way I can understand, LOL! This “easly ruffled old lady” gets confused.

      • that tom tom bit is one long bold racist statment. Das Penny. one of your crulest to date.

    • Go back to our teens!!!”MAGIC DRAGON” ” HORSE WITH NO NAME” “MAGIC CARPET RIDE”” that is where the mind of our “friend ” resides!!!!

      • These very songs are “about the substances that causes the various psychosis in people ” paranoia, superior, lofty, attitude…

      • what does that even mean!?
im not even sure that can be a dig. but some how im sure it is.
any way, its a new day
        group hug!!!!

Dont take any wooden nickles.while buying your ciggs, on the rez.

      • There is nothing about the Tom Tom bit that I did not get. Just calling you out on it.
You can be as clever, witty and right on sans the racism bit . I’m from the sensitive younger generation. The one that doesn’t know who John f Kennedy is

      • Paranoia!!??
        Over what exactly?

        Penny,
Didn’t I ask you to stay out of trouble this morning!?

    • Boy OH Boy how would you like to have the task of having to work along side a total ” ozone inspired ” ego mania inspired being day in and day out… Retirement is not all that bad!!!

    • yes, i live on long island. we have Indians Here they all have cars and A.C. But this is NY, we take care of things here. Out west maybe different. But i dont have to live in the west to be able to figure out its a poor Indian family even though i know nothing about the place or the people but it looks like i am probably right since every comment since has been Indian related. so snark all you want.

you were the first person who asked a question who would walk 4 miles and it popped in to my head not because i have to know Indians from the south west but because it was the first thing that popped into my head in a fraction of a second.

Before my Indian answer no body mention american Indians so what your really asking is how could i possible know something with absolutely no reference. sorry if you repeatedly need to take comfort in accusing me of making things up. i asked rezdog because i was hoping he could tell us both whos right and whos wrong. you or me, sadly he is from yet another part of the united states. but i was asking for your sake. i already new the answer thats why i commented an Indian would walk. Because he had to

      • I live in New York too, and the Indians are far from destitute, they have taken much of the land in the Finger Lakes Area and go on about a treaty they signed back in the stone age and would have us give all the land back to them because their ancestors basically gave it away. if we “taking care” of things here mean they don’t pay taxes and are draining the area dry with their gambling casino’s then you are correct! New York has become the new Las Vegas! I personally don’t care whether you are wrong or right about who adopted this dog. This is an article about a dog that died because of someone being irresponsible. As usual you are sticking up for the people that killed this dog and then went back to get another like it was a piece of furniture that if destroyed you just “replace” it. Adler deserves better than this, I am done with you and your nasty, mean comments to some of us that you call “Bitchy old hags”. You have no respect for anyone’s opinion if they don’t agree with you, and I am quite done with your “holier than thou” attitude! I hate to tell you ellen cottone, I know people that live in Phoenix Arizona and the Indians do NOT have to walk! They have cars like the rest of the people out there!

      • Until YOU go to a real reservation YOU ARE CLUELESS !!! EVEN our last President was culture shocked when he went to the Crow Reservation south of Hardin Mt… The Native American is down trodden BY their OWN CHOICE !!! the get royalty and treaty money quite often also monies for oil wells and such on Tribal Land.. it is off to the used car lots in the area … a new ride at least until the oil runs out or the tires wear out… Then piled in a junk heap on their land they were awarded by the treaties… Hell some let 10 -15 cars pile up weather and rot on the property never to be touched again.. How many go on to further their education… the numbers are in the single digits!!! Who did this to the Native American .lll The Government… Now we owe it forever!!! This is the sad truth!!! the beautiful art, music , dancing, is a lost art…

      • Hell get on a bus ride the West… Indians are just like anyone else… they are not out herding sheep in their hand made Guchi Shoes.. they drive very nice PU trucks in the 50- 60 thousand range. They shop in Sam’s , Walmart , use credit cards.. the only time the wear traditional buckskins is when they have a tribal celebration or in parades!!! They eat junk food , like Taco Bell’s , McDonald’s just like we do…

      • thats funny barkly because i thought it was a cautionary “Dog” tail about a shelter who knew the bag well enough and still managed to drop the ball and was contrite enough to re reward the family with a dog and now walk the extra mile to make sure It does not happen ever again.
maybe you should take off your hate specks and put on your clear views. If you can find them. Being surrounded by all the dark and all.

    • Hi barkleys mom,

it turns out Maricopa County, Phoenix, AZ , “IS” an Indian reservation.
And the people are called the Maricopa Indian Tribe.
so now that you know this fun fact do you really think im ,
how did you put it!? B.S and making things up as i go along?
      LMFAO !!

      Groveling apology excepted,

Now meet me at the shaved husky site so i can give you more of the same.
      unlike your self,
i dont have to know what the hell im talking about to be right on, sister!!
call it a gift. Your the only one who seems to be interested in it. i dont even notice it
(Bronx cheer!! to you and your tom tom too)

  6. Anything to get rid of another dog, eh Maricopa? What the hell is wrong with you allowing these idiots to adopt another animal after exposing Adler to the extreme heat for four miles? These people should never have been allowed to adopt another dog. This poor dog will probably suffer some neglect and/or abuse with jerks like these for owners.

  7. ABSOLUTELY NOT OKAY AT ALL! If you are too stupid to understand that walking a dog in extreme temperatures isn’t good, then you are too stupid to own any living thing, especially a dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Je ne comprends pas que l’on autorise encore ces gens à posséder un animal. Se sont des gens irresponsables. Honteux.

  9. Ridiculous! It is common sense to not walk your pet four miles in hot weather! They shouks never be allowed another pet!

  10. Adler should be their last dog. Anyone with common sense knows a dog should not be exercised in 100 degree heat. If given another dog they will do the same thing. No more dogs.

    • Poor Adler was hitched to a STUPID HUMAN! Just as the old saying goes “You can’t fix STUPID”. Why would you let them adopt again? What STUPID act will this fur babie have to suffer through next? Too much! If this were a child would you do the same? Adoption question HAVE YOU EVER LOST A PET? YES, I LEFT IT DIE OF HEAT EXHAUSTION. HOW MANY DO YOU WANT TO ADOPT? Disgusted!-!!

  11. Is this a joke??Stupid AND cruel!!4 miles,no water,no shade!!!!AND you idiots want to let them adopt another “victim”!!!!NO NO NO NO..Hope they are childless!!

  12. i live in Australia and here it can get very hot here it can reach up to 108/114. Its not rocket science that you don’t take a dog out in that sort of heat. I always take the dogs out for a walk early in the morning between 6.00 and 6.30 am in the morning as its a lot cooler then. You also don’t leave dogs in cars with this sort of heat neither you leave them home where its a lot cooler for them. In what these people did to this dog is utterly stupid and should not had been allowed to adopt another dog

  13. poor family, indigenous, do not own a car, do not need a car. want a dog. need a dog . deserves a dog. will now be mentored and checked on. The shelter was aware they did not pull up in a car. to bad a shelter worker couldnt take them on the 5min car ride home. the shelter also is at fault.
even poor people can be good dog owners.
they get points for coming back and asking for another dog and that dog will be happy to be out of a shelter.
the shelter is smart and the family will be visited im sure till it all works out just fine. and other dogs will be adopted in there community. Not everybody in america lives like us people.
and dogs dont know the differance. they are just looking to get out and be a part of any loving family.

  14. I find it difficult to believe that the person didn’t know that the dog was suffering from heat distress while walking the 4 miles home. This is not good enough. I cannot help but wonder what will happen to the next dog.

  15. DO NOT LET THEM HAVE ANOTHER DOG….. you have to have common sense to take care of an animal….and if they made this poor dog walk 4 miles in the heat of the day……THEY ARE TOO STUPID TO OWN AN ANIMAL…. DO not release another fur baby to these idiots!!

    • red, when you were 18 and you left 2 of your fav L.Ps in the back seat of your chevy impalla in july and came back to find resolidified mishapend vinyl you attained common sense.
So did these people. So yes they deserve another chance.because now they know. And they want to take on the burden and relieve a shelter of the overabundance of dogs in danger.
also dont you think the shelter knowing they had no car could have done a little something?
knowing they are dealing with the very poor?

  16. Adler should be their final dog. Everyone who knows what’s right understands that you shouldn’t make a dog play outside when it’s 100 degrees hot. If they get another dog, they’ll probably make the same mistake again. They shouldn’t get any more dogs. dog drooling
