In Baltimore, a report of two aggressive, loose dogs and the subsequent false report of a dog bite ended with the shooting death of what authorities described as “two unconfined, aggressive pit bulls.”  On Saturday afternoon, police were called to an alley located behind Edgecombe Circle where investigators found two dogs that had escaped from their backyard.

According to AbcNews, the two four-year-old pit bulls named Major and Savage have never been a problem in the neighborhood. One of the dogs was said to have jumped the fence, and the other squeezed out where three young children – aged 6,7, and 9 had been playing. The dogs were reported to have “scratched and cut” the one little girl. None of the children went to the hospital, and the child at the location was “treated for small scrapes and lacerations” according to the child’s mother who assured reporters her children are fine.

Officers contend they tried to contain the dogs, but shot both of them after they charged. One dog died at the scene, and the other dog ran home and died later that day.

“I ran home to my dog bleeding out on my kitchen floor,” the owner of the dogs stated. “I’m hurt, I’m very numb, and I’m hurt. I can’t even put it into words. I can’t stop crying. We’ve been living around here for almost nine-years or so, and I’ve never had no issues with my dogs. My neighbors never have an issue with dogs, my dogs never got out this gate.”

And yes, the owner of Major and Savage is thankful the children were not hurt, but cannot understand why the police labeled her dogs as aggressive and shot them; insisting her dogs were both “playful and spoiled.” An investigation is ongoing.

So would the police have shot two dogs jumping over a fence if they weren’t pit bull mixes? What do you think? And please comment about local headlines which included such words as “3 children attacked by pit bulls,” “officers shot dogs that attacked children,” or how about this one – “Baltimore police kill dog after it attacked children”?  Remember the children, according to their mother were “treated for small scrapes and lacerations.”

  1. I am AGHAST! WHYYYY???? If the police had ANY dog training, they would have KNOWN that the dogs weren’t aggressive! OF COURSE they were killed just because they were pit bulls! STOP THE MADNESS!!! RIP Major and Savage. You did NOT DESERVE THIS! ???? ????

    • I’m not aghast. I’ve come 2 expect this from “our finest”. They are scumbags who shoot anything that moves for target practice, and, yes, the fact of their perceived breed played a big role in their deaths.

  2. Yes the police would have shot two dogs that jumped over the fence even if they weren’t “Pit Bulls”. Some of our spineless police officers of today, shoot first and ask questions later when it comes to dogs. Shame on whoever called the police claiming someone had been bit especially if the knew whose dogs they were and nobody was really hurt! Just one question though, where was the owner when the dogs were jumping the fence and squeezing through it? If the owner had been there, this most likely wouldn’t have happened. My heart does go out to the owner, no body wants their pets shot and killed like this for no good reason!

  4. Baltimore police are known to be aggressive, which is why, when you read a story about the good ones who adopt a pet, whether a dog (especially a pit) or a cat, you realize that cop is almost a fluke in hiring procedure. NO, those dogs would not have been shot had the not been pit bull mixes! Those cops didn’t give them a chance because that’s the attitude that pervades the department.

  5. Barbara J Catanzaro: never know how a dog is going to react when they are trapped without an escape. I have several dogs the smallest is a Bichon and I guarantee you if he were cornered he would come out biting. Does that mean he should be shot on sight if he were to get out of my yard? There’s no doubt in my mind after a lifetime up doing it German Shepherd rescue with some of the worst abuse cases I’ve ever seen that these two pits or shot because of their breed!

Police have got to be trained. They’ve got to learn the same as dog trainers do to think like the dog. Whenever an animal is trapped or cornered it gets afraid just like people do. Best case scenario is they could have called Animal Control you could have tranquilized these two until their owner was found. They don’t understand why they have to stay in a fenced yard so they can get out they will. That shouldn’t be a death sentence any more than protecting their family when an officer comes on their property or into their home should be.

    • Training of police concerning canine encounters is a myth. No amount of training in the world is going to help a single dog that finds itself confronted by the police. Why? Because there are no consequences for shooting a dog. Period. Society has not yet caught up to the fact that cops kill an estimated 25 dogs a day. Society also places these “heroes” on a pedestal. They are infallible, untouchable, beyond reproach. No dog stands a chance against such immortals.

      • How right you are, there are no consequences even if they kill their own K-9s. I have the greatest respect for the police for what they have to face and contend with, but there is no reason for killing innocent pets. You are right the ones that do this need to be held accountable but there are good ones out there also that do serve and protect, we just don’t hear as much about the good things they do.

  6. It is a shame that the 2 dogs died when they didn’t bite anyone. Not even the kids in the next yard. Not even their mother was accusing the dogs of savagly hurting the kids. So if the police was to believe anyone it should’ve been the neighbors. And I know it was because they were Pit Bulls. If it was any other breed they would’ve been just brought home or to the pound and they would’ve called the owner.

  7. Once again police shoot and kill 2 dogs for no reason! The dogs charged? Some how I doubt that! The children were not bitten, a couple of scrapes where did the dog bite rumor come from? If pitbull looking dogs are loose they automatically get shot and killed by the cops or they get put down at the shelter! It angers me! These dogs don’t deserve the treatment they are being subjected too!

    • I’m right there with you, Kathleen! Every pit bull I’ve ever met has been just the SWEETEST dog. This is SO UNFAIR!!! I “promote” them on FB as the wonderful dogs that they are…and I urge you to do the same. We’ve GOT to change “the public’s” mind about these dogs!

    • As par for the course, out of control piss poor examples of cops ride again – they shoot pit bulls just to do it, matters none if these dogs did anything or not, which apparently they didn’t and these brain dead cops will lie and lie to cover their asses. Apparently Baltimore looks for police recruits under rocks cause that is where these two were found.

  8. So so sorry for your loss! This is out of control! I hope that justice is served even though it will not bring back these babies. My heart just breaks ????

  9. The kids could actually have just gotten the scrapes from playing in the yard. There seems no confirmation the scratches are even from the dogs. I hope the owner sues the police department. Once again, dogs being shot by police. Pit Bulls are the most common to die at the hands of police. Baltimore has a history of police aggression towards dogs. Remember the cop who cut the throat of a Sharpei while his partner held the dog? It used to be the biggest worry you had when your dog managed to get out of your yard was the possibility of being hit by a car. Now you have to worry about the very people who are there to protect you – shooting dogs just because they feel like it. There are far too many cases – even dogs confined to their yards or inside their houses. A dog was shot IN HIS CRATE during a failed drug raid in St. Louis a couple of years ago (the police didn’t find enough of anything to justify the raid, but two dogs, including the one securely in his crate, were shot dead….in their own home).

    • I’m right there with you, Linda! This is RIDICULOUS! I don’t remember the one about the dog being shot IN HIS CRATE! I always make sure my big dog is IN his crate before I leave home. Seems even THAT isn’t a guarantee of his safety! Please see my Facebook page, Justice for Dogs Shot by Police, for even MORE stories of police incompetence. ???? ???? ????

  10. I feel the police were abusing their power again just wanted to shoot or kill something that day baltimore cops love shooting first than later asking questions . They say trust these officers . If you have a dog and you see a police officer , protect your dog befor they see it.

  11. They were killed because cops like to shoot things, and they know they can get away with shooting somebody’s dogs. You get a young guy, let him wear a gun, sooner or later he’s going to want to use that gun.

  12. So who gave the false report? The police or someone else. And also, though I feel for the owner, a pet owner must do everything necessary to keep his or her pets safe. If they weren’t loose, this would not have happened. Chances are the police profiled the dogs as aggressive. Partly because of the breed and not knowing the dogs behavior. I don’t know why cops can’t use tranquilizers, nets etc instead of killing dogs. Really the only victim here are the poor dogs

  13. Had the dogs been chihuahua’s . or rat terriers. Or some little ankle biters. NO THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SHOT.. pit bulls are so abused and misunderstood. Rip babies. Some people are just crap

    • Worst part is, if they HAD been Chihuahua’s, Rat Terriers, or some other ankle biter, they would have been MORE likely to bite. My daughter has a nasty little Terrier and he will bite you before one of my German Shepherds will.

  14. Cops who like to hunt dogs actually don’t discriminate, you can find stories about just about any breed being shot by a cop. That’s why it’s better to keep your dogs in the house and hope that cops don’t need to come inside, because they will shoot them in your house, too. They’ve shot crated dogs, puppies, seniors, dogs locked in bedrooms and even shot at least one straight through a bathroom door, repeatedly and deliberately. I’m not talking about stray bullets either. Not all cops are like that but there are some bad ones out there.

  15. Hell no they wouldn’t have shot labs or goldens jumping the fence. But let the dog be a pit, rott, shar pei then they shoot. why didnt they taze or peper spray?

  16. Just another Knee Jerk reaction from stupid Cops who just don’t Understand and just want to shoot something!!!
