Despite cars whizzing past on a busy interstate in Newark, New Jersey, a faithful dog refused to leave the side of her deceased friend who had already been struck by a passing car. Thankfully, Troopers with the New Jersey State Police were notified of the situation and responded to help save the remaining survivor.

On Thursday, the State Patrol recounted the situation:

Earlier today, troopers from Totowa Station responded to the report of two dogs on the shoulder of Interstate 280 in Newark. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with the area, Interstate 280 is a busy roadway during rush hour, especially in the Newark area. So, the responding troopers were greatly concerned about the safety of these animals

And wrote of the surviving dog’s devotion to her fallen companion:

When they arrived, they searched the area and discovered a German Shepherd lying next to a Pit Bull. Sadly, the troops discovered that the Pit Bull was deceased. With no owner in sight, they knew they had to get the Shepherd off the highway, but she did not want to leave the other dog’s side.

With some persistence, the Troopers were able to coax the shepherd out of harm’s way and she was taken back to the police station where she was offered some water and perhaps, “a quick game of fetch.”

It is currently unknown how the dogs wound up on the side of the highway – Troopers are still investigating. The State Patrol wrote, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the other dog, but we’re elated that we were able to rescue the Shepherd.”

The rescued dog has been taken in by a local animal rescue shelter.

  1. I would have stopped my car and attempted to get her and her lost companion inside(buying her friend in my back yard if necessary). In the time that people called in and reported them and the authorities arriving, she could also have been killed. I hope that this loving devoted friend is soon in a loving home. Bless her and her friend.

  2. And of course, those self serving motorists just kept right on going with no thought of helping these dogs – what does that tell you about humans? Yet, a dog had more compassion and concern for his friend while ignorant humans just passed them by – Sweet Jesus, no wonder I have no use for the human race – animals have MUCH more soul than most people and this proved it. So glad the shepherd was rescued and may he get the safe loving home he obviously never had.

  3. You and I would have stopped traffic and picked both dogs up for their safety. Hope the pup gets a really good home with well behaved and loving children.

  4. IN this day and age :::: our society has become :::: and self-centered group of throw away dick weeds!!! Hell they don’t care about family ( Parents, Spouses, Children). Most have No time to even care for a pet properly LET ALONE SAVE a HURT, FRIGHTENED, LOST ANIMAL …. may thanks for the officers that attempted to save both, but were at least able to save ONE..

  5. Someone dumped these babies there with intentions of them being killed. Hopefully the owner can be located and jailed, fined, SOMETHING!
