Bear family to be killed

An entire family of bears in Hanover, New Hampshire will be caught and destroyed and the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game has stated that they are being “forced” to carry out the seemingly heartless task. According to Wednesday’s WMUR News, officials with the department claim that they are out of options and killing the family is the only thing that they can do to keep everyone in the area safe.

A mother and her three cubs are facing an unnatural and untimely demise because they are not afraid of humans – the bears have lost their fear of people in the midst of their scavaging of trash and bird food that is readily available for their meals. The proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back happened when the two one-year-old bear cubs recently entered someone’s home.

Andrew Timmins, wildlife biologist and Game Black Bear Project leader for the Dept. of Fish and Game, stated:

When bears start entering homes, that becomes a threshold where the public’s going to demand something be done.

The bears have become comfortable foraging for food because area residents leave things out – now, the department believes that the bears can’t be relocated because they will simply take up their bad behavior elsewhere…or possibly come back to Hanover.

Traps are being set for the bear family – after they are caught, they will be tranquilized and shot. The decision to kill the bears is not being received well – in fact, many negative comments have recently been left on the Facebook page for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. It is unlikely that public opinion will do much, if anything, to sway officials from their decision.

  1. Thats terrible . They should at least try to relocate them, it might work. Don’t just assume ots a negative outcome. Those bears have just as much right to be there as humans do.

  2. This is the most ridiculous humans are to blame time after time. Why can’t these animals be brought to a sanctuary or to the wilderness!

  3. This is appalling, I don’t believe for one moment these bears can’t be relocated. They just don’t want to be bothered, it’s much easier to just KILL them!

    • I agree with you……. Someone wants them dead (perhaps to sell their parts, meat, bile, fur)…….

Relocation to a very distant remote wilderness location should ALWAYS be an essential first option for bears……. if after 3 relocation attempts have failed, then a reputable sanctuary would be a “final” option…..

  4. This is HORRIBLE!!!! It is NOT their Fault!!!! The people up there need to clean up their area so the Bears will not be able to get the food so readily!!!

  5. This is so sad, the people continue with the trash and birdfeeders so 60thghey will come.why cant they be relocated or sent to an animal.park/ zoo. Please dont kill them.

  6. I just can’t believe that they can’t be relocated or transferred to a sanctuary…..UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! I think someone is lazy

  7. I’m appalled but unfortunately not shocked because this country has no respect for animals and the solution is ALWAYS to kill them, weather it’s a dog, cat, horse or bears!!! The good Lord needs to swoop in and take away all animals and see if that changes that dispicable attitude shown toward all animal life. I just don’t buy the story that there are no other alternatives!

    • I wish the lord could do that. Take all animals away for a year. .I like that idea. I just think they dont want to bother moving them

  8. So they kill these bears. What about the next bear or bears that show up. Kill them too. The next bear is gonna smell that a bear was there

  9. Si les gens arrêtaient de salir la planète et de prendre l’espace tout le monde pourait vivre sereinement. Mais l’humain est un égoïste et un barbare.

  10. These residents are responsible for what’s happening to these bears. N.H has many wooded areas and these residents refuse to take care of their trash and also many of them feed the bears. As a result the bears pay the price.

  11. After I read this about this Bear Family, It make me Sick to hear about the Killing of the Bear Cubs and their Mother.

  12. Sorry – that is a load of crap that they are being ‘forced’ to kill these bears – and once again, the WRONG species is being blamed for what HUMANS do – like not properly contain trash – to kill these animals is unacceptable – why can’t they tranquilize and relocate them – to literally kill them for no viable reason is beyond stupid. Bears do what bears do and if cubs got into a home whose fault is that? Humans who live in these areas need to learn to live with wildlife or MOVE!

  13. I saw it on the news. The bears will not be euthanized. Once they are found they will be placed elsewhere where they will be safe.
