At the Harris County Animal Shelter, the heartless family of a frightened Labrador/shepherd mix tied a rope around her neck and legs and dragged her into the shelter. The “family,” still in their slippers, yelled at their terrified dog named Maya – angry and impatient that she wasn’t walking into the high kill shelter willingly. With her tail tucked tightly between her legs, her eyes wide with fright – Maya’s owners continued to drag her into the shelter. Not a tear was shed; the family’s little boy; not only a witness to the heartless act, but also a young participant pushing Maya as she tried to hold her ground and resist – all caught on a disturbing video that went viral.
Just one day later, Maya was freed from the shelter by Rescue Dogs Rock NYC:
“We were so disgusted at Maya’s family, who didn’t even look back and even care that Maya was losing everything. They actually pushed her into the shelter as she resisted. At least have some type of compassion about surrendering your dog,” posted Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of the rescue organization.
Advocates were irate as they watched the video clearly demonstrating how bothered and annoyed Maya’s owners were having to take the time to dump their dog at a shelter. And even more heartbreaking was watching the frightened dog and feeling her rejection.
Early Sunday morning, Maya’s additional freedom photos now show her enjoying the outdoors and breathing in the fresh air as she is accompanied by a compassionate vet tech. Maya is now being prepared to be spayed, vaccinated and tested for parasites. She is heartworm positive and will be treated.
“The best thing that can happen to Maya now is to have a home waiting for her when she is ready to make the journey from Texas to New York,” added Stacey. “We are accepting applications for Maya. She is two-years-old, a shepherd mix and kid and dog friendly. Maya is sweet, loving and affectionate despite her cruel past.”
