Imagine a dog, estimated by Manhattan’s Animal Care Centers of New York City to be a young, adult pit bull, weighing only 15-pounds. Imagine a young dog’s muscles so atrophied and weak, she was barely able to stand or walk. Imagine what life must have been for a young dog  left alone in a crate for a prolonged period of time.

On Saturday evening, Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC ,received an emergency call from the emergency room veterinarian at the  shelter for help with a suspected cruelty case. The quiet and extremely docile young adult dog just wanted to be held and loved. She has been named “Hope.” Her initial assessment by the staff included:

“Subjective: no history, emaciated young dog with crusted epistaxis debris around nares, no cough or sneeze
Eyes: clear
Ears: clean
Oral Exam: moderate staining
Heart: WNL
Lungs: WNL
Abdomen: tucked in, WNL
Musculoskeletal: emaciated 2.5/9 BCS, affected ambux4 due to muscle wasting
Mentation: QAR, mild dehydration
Preliminary Assessment: emaciated neglected animal”

Hope was rushed to the organization’s emergency veterinary hospital on Saturday evening. The staff is currently running extensive blood work profiles to check her organ functions, electrolytes, blood values and everything that can make an impact on a muscle atrophied and severely emaciated dog. Hope is currently on intravenous fluids; more information as to her condition is expected later on Sunday.

Hope needs everyone’s help:

  1. OMG! This has brought me to tears!!!! A MILLION THANK YOU’S TO RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC!!! ONCE AGSIN COMING TO THE RESCUE OF A HOFFIFICLY ABUSED DOG!! ❤️GET WELL SOON SWEETHEART HOPE❤️ I AM PRAYING FOR HOPE????????

  2. This is why, for the most part, I hate people. Only maggots who do thing like this don’t qualify as people – therefore, they deserve nothing and would best serve humanity by ceasing to exist. I’d be willing to help them on their way to non-existence.

  3. RDR will hopefully be able to help this dog get stronger and overcome the abuse she has received, Hope has such a loving face and we must stop this abuse from continually happening. Police know from being on the streets who neglects their pets or uses their animals for dogfighting. We need to put an end to this and it can be done if those who see any of this happening immediately report it. Stiffer punishment with extensive jail time should be the norm in sentencing. Use these scum as an example for others who mistreat and abuse animals. We can do it but must keep our eyes and ears open.

  4. I had one, a black lab. Same condition. He was old, at least 14. He was at the Saving Grace facility in Eugene. The 2 years i had him he never took more than 3 inch steps. He was unemotional at first as well. Oh, how i loved him. He was so special. He had been locked in a crate for many years. Hope will do fine soon as a family gets to love on her and treat her right. She is young so recovery will happen with attention. Get well soon Hope. Love and dog cookies are waiting. RDR will make sure of that. They are special too.

  5. HOPE YOU ARE GOING AFTER THE MONSTER WHO crated this poor baby her whole life. Why are there so many monsters that own pets…… we have got to find a way to stop them.
