Last night, an elderly woman nearly drowned while trying to save a dog who was struggling in the water in the Forked River community of Lacey Township, New Jersey. According to the Asbury Park Press, the woman, in her 70s, jumped into the water to save the dog before emergency responders arrived at the scene.

By the time that rescuers with Forked River Fire Department and Lacey Township Underwater Rescue and Recovery dive team arrived on Thursday night, the woman had already gone under. When she was pulled out of the water there was no pulse.

Emergency personnel were able to perform CPR on the woman and restored her pulse – she was transported to a hospital in Toms River; her current condition is unknown.  The dog who was in the lagoon was rescued as well and was reported to be “okay” after the harrowing ordeal, reported NJ.com.

  1. GIANT THANK YOU to this courageous and caring lady for her gallant attempts to rescue a dog – you did what many people would have not – you are a hero to the helpless animal who thanks to you was saved – hope you fully recover.

  2. I hope the elderly woman is okay. It takes a lot of courage for someone at that age to jump into the river to save a dog. Bless her heart.

  3. There are people that would throw the dog into the water and hoped it drowned and then there are angels like this woman who risked her life to save a dog and from the sounds of it, not even her dog. Prayers she will be ok.

  4. She did what most of us would do. I’m glad they got her back. I hope she will make a full recovery. She will be glad to hear the dog was pulled to safety, as well. That will do her heart good.

  5. I hope they are both okay. What a courageous woman to jump in and attempt to save this dog. I love to hear about animal defenders !
