Disturbing photos of Irish students dancing with a dead porpoise have been posted on online; animal advocates are disgusted and the actions of the two students have sparked a furious reaction with comments branding the men as both “idiots and cruel.” According to the Irish Mirror, the incident happened at the Parchment Square Student Accommodation complex, close to Cork IT. The students involved are not believed to be students at the college.

Shocking images showed two young males dancing in the kitchen of an apartment in Cork with the body of the porpoise draped over one of the men’s shoulders. Another photo showed the dead animal flung out the window lying on its side in a flowerbed. It is believed, during the drunken brawl, one of the men threw the animal’s body out the window of the third floor complex. Their actions were videoed and then posted on Snap Chat.

It is not known if the dolphin was dead or alive when the photographs were taken. They were  subsequently shared by Cork radio station Red FM on their Facebook page:

“I got these photos this morning from a friend. Apparently they’re doing the rounds. They’re disgusting. I think it’s a seal or dolphin.”

The radio announcer continued:

“The poor animal. I don’t know how or why they did this. It’s appalling. It seems to be students. I was a student myself once, and I know what goes on. Most of it is harmless fun, but this is disgraceful.”

An employee at the complex discovered the dead body of the animal lying on the grass the next morning. He was instructed to properly wrap and dispose of the mammal’s remains.  A spokesperson for the Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals condemned the action:

“The mind boggles with people’s stupidity. Anybody with any level of cop-on would know it’s not right. They’ll think twice before they do something like this again,” the representative stated.

The Parchment Square Student Accommodation where the disturbing incident occurred has not commented.

The police reported they were not aware of the incident.

  1. Another example of inconsiderate punks who think of nothing else but themselves – idiots with a capital I.

  2. There needs to be necropsy done to see if there was any chance it was alive while this whole act started. I would give the students an option yr alcohol revouvery or jail.

  3. Reward of €4000 for the arrest and conviction of Harbor Porpoise Snatchers.

Yesterday I offered a reward of €2000 for information identifying the two men who danced with a dead dolphin and threw the body out of the window of a dormitory. I said I was looking for information on where in Ireland the dolphin was taken and when? Plus I needed information leading to the arrest and conviction of the two men responsible.

I did receive quite a few responses but none of them can be found credible because dozens of different names were turned in and no information of where the dolphin was taken and when.

The reward is now €4000. Another person came forward to offer an addition €2000.

This reward will be given for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible. Apparently there are photos and videos available and this is the kind of evidence that can be of considerable value. Please provide this evidence to the National Park and Wildlife Service.

I have advised the NPWS to inform me if they have received evidence leading to an arrest of the individuals involved.

Some people have angrily denounced our reward saying that the two men did nothing illegal.

    Well, actually they did.

In Ireland the harbour porpoise is protected under the Wildlife Act, and is listed under Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive. Annex IV of the EC Habitats Directive. Protected species of Wildlife (Amendment) Act, OSPAR List of threatened and Declining Species and Habitats. Protection under the

Under the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 1976-2005, all cetaceans and seals are protected species listed on the 5th Schedule.
Ireland has also ratified the Berne Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats
(1979), the Convention on Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS or Bonn Convention),

All cetacean species are included on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). CITES prohibits international trade in specimens of
these species except for instance for scientific research. In these exceptional cases, trade may take place
provided it is authorized by the granting of both an import permit and an export permit (or re-export certificate).

It is an offence to trade ‘possess’ or ‘transport’ Harbour Porpoise and parts. The offence is committed if the animal is alive or dead.

To receive the reward of €4000 report the information to the Irish Department of the National Parks & Wildlife Services as a breach of the Wildlife Act.
