Dozens of dogs at a California city animal shelter are perishing from a deadly viral disease. According to Thursday’s KTLA News, some employees at the San Bernardino City Shelter have expressed concerns about the number of dogs dying from the disease, buy they claim that they are being threatened with losing their jobs if they speak publicly about the distemper outbreak which is believed to be responsible for at least 80 canine deaths.

Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease which causes respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological problems. The viral infection is spread through bodily fluids, including droplets from sneezing and coughing – with dogs kept in close proximity inside of the city’s kennel runs, spread of the disease can be rampant.

The animal control shelter manager has stated that the shelter staff is doing what they can to contain the distemper outbreak – including bleaching of the kennel areas and evacuating certain portions of the shelter. Though the shelter manager has stated that the crisis has already “peaked,” there are rescue volunteers who believe that the problem is not yet contained.

Tragically, dozens of dogs who have been adopted from this facility have come down with the disease – and most of them have died. According to Pet Md, adopters who are concerned about their new pet should watch for symptoms of distemper, which include: Fever, watery discharge from the nose and eyes, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and neurological signs such as paralysis and seizures.

  1. This is heartbreaking, back in 1968 I watched my precious little puppy Tippy die of this horrible disease. I never have forgotten the heartbreak not being able to help her and to watch her suffer so. Prayers for this shelter, I hope they can stop this outbreak.

  2. California Hell Animal Shelter! Do you know how to control distemper? First you vaccinate every dog that comes into the shelter. Then you DISINFECT EVERY OUNCE, EVERY CAGE, EVERY ANIMAL LOCATED FACILITY IN THE SHELTER! A.H.! WHAT KIND OF HELL ARE YOUR RUNNING? Is this epidemics so that you’ll SAVE MONEY? SO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO HUMANELY EUTHANIZE, which you should not if you were actively promoting ADOPTIONS AND TOOK CARE OF YOUR SHELTERED (SHELTER MY ASS!) PETS? How much disgust I feel for people like you, California, New York, Texas…ALL OVER THIS DAMN USA!

    • You are so right! After decades of trying to change the laws in this pathetic, greed infested country, I have come to KNOW that money is all that matters and the human race is heinously self entitled and self important. The animals will always suffer as long as the people in the USA continue to devolve. Sick, sad country.

  4. I would be devastated if I adopted a dog and he came down with distemper and died. I know vaccinations are never a 100% guarantee of not getting a disease but you can’t tell me that DOZENS of dogs who were vaccinated have died. Is the shelter trying to save money by not providing this vaccine to incoming dogs? RIP to the poor pups that have died.

  5. This place has always been horrible, now it’s come public knowledge they aren’t doing their jobs correctly. God only knows how long this has been going on and hidden from public knowledge. It needs to be shut down, adoptions need to be put on hold, vetting must be #1 for all the animals there!!! Containment of this horrific disease is the only way to stop it !!!

  6. That damn animal control director should be fired& the health dept. Should be told. All those people who afopted animals from here & got ripped off!Shameful so-called animal shelter!

  7. The same thing happened to Kansas City Shelter and they have recovered from the loss and the disease. Please, San Bernadino, fix this NOW! You are in business of knowing what to do. How dare you adopt out a sick dog, knowing it came from this group?? Don’t you realize when this hits the media you will all lose your jobs?? Shame for telling employees to keep quiet. Glad they didn’t!!

  8. It is my understanding that this is the same shelter that was vandalized just a few months ago. Fighting dogs were stolen and others brutally killed. San Bernardino County is a mess as it is and the animals in that county don’t stand a chance.

    • Yes that county is the pits, drugs, killings, animal abuse, and then you think after being rescued and pray the poor animals have a chance! The bastards there are ignoring the situation. No need for these precious animals to suffer dire pain. This is AWEFUL.

  9. My take on this is this is that the staff are not cleaning the kennels thoroughly with beach and probably are not giving the pups the shots when they enter the shelters. This the problem with most kill shelters They just don’t care. bottom line.

    • I took to strays to be fixed here in VTA co, trapped and release program, I kept them for a month or so, old enough so they’ll get fixed. Was gonna nurse them after and feed them as I have about 78 ferals. I took em, and couldn’t get em back I had to adopt!!! I told them there not adoptable I will watch them, I had to adopt one! The other was adopted our ritecas I was fixing paper for one I was adopting. Well both were sick! The week they were there they contracted a virus…. I had to pay for one, but all my ferals that I take care of came down with the virus too! My god that Was Expensive!!!! And VCAS told me I couldn’t bring em back! No outside cats, imagine that!!!!!!!’ I’ve never dealt with them and now never will AGAIN!!

  10. […] AB 485’s narrow focus on pet stores won’t just send pet lovers to illegal mills. Shelters and rescues face almost no regulation from the state of California, even though they provide a much higher proportion of California’s cats and dogs with loving homes. Because they frequently take in pets that have been abandoned and/or abused, or otherwise have few or no records, rescues and shelters need to be vigilant about pet treatment. This protects both animals and their prospective owners, as shelters are not required to provide warranties when animals are adopted out. Regretfully, a California rescue and a city-operated shelter were recently busted engaging in substandard practices and abuse of dozens of animals. […]
