Depending upon how the situation is viewed, a stray three-year-old dog has been given a new chance at a long life – even though how she arrived at her good fortune may have been quite fortuitous. The dog now dubbed Elka had been found by a Good Samaritan in central northern Manitoba with her toes sheared off – she was bleeding profusely, limping and obviously in severe pain.

“This horrific injury may have been caused by a snare or steel trap. She was found by a concerned community member who contacted us right away. She has been seen around prior to the injury, but her limping brought her quick attention,” posted Norway House Rescue on their Facebook page.

According to CbcNews, Colleen Holloway with Manitoba Mutts was notified and the non-profit rescue quickly jumped into action. With the help of Norway House Rescue, Elka was flown to Winnipeg and has been treated by a veterinarian – including cleaning up the injury and bandaging her up.

“She is relaxing in someone’s living room right now realizing, ‘Holy smokes this is what life can be like’.”

Although Elka is adjusting to her new life since no one knows what her life had been prior to her being captured. It is likely however, she will need her foot or her leg amputated. For now she has a fluffy new bed at her foster family’s home. Elka’s veterinarian care will be very expensive, but isn’t every life worth saving?

  1. Trapping was one of the main means of supporting a family in the 1800’s and early 1900’s THIS IS NOW THE 20th Century and this practice is inhumane BULLSHIT !!!! What a horrific way to die… We have a trapper right down the road from us he mistreats his own animals…. people around here hate him… Myself I wish he would catch his foot in one of his own traps and someone plug him between the eyes!!!!! Animal’s should not have to suffer like this… Needless to SAY some small child could be out sledding , walking , and also suffer the same horrific and painful , not to mention LOSS of LIFE for a trap….. What a complete bunch of assholes!!!! So glad this girl was saved…

    • It wasn’t too long ago here that a poor girl was walking her Labrador Retriever and she got caught in one of these traps. We have an old army depot that is fenced in and some POS had cut holes in the fence and placed traps so animals could be trapped from outside the fence. This poor girl’s dog Molly (on a leash no less) got her head trapped and the poor girl stood there waiting for help watching her dog die. The worse part was this was illegally done by our POS County Animal Control officer and another man who were trying to “control” the coyote population. They took some sort of a plea deal which amounted to almost nothing as far as punishment, a fine and an admission of guilt. The worst was the defence attorney trying to get the charges dropped saying “There was no harm caused by the offenses that the Defendants are charged with.” what the Hell, a dead family pet is “no harm done”?

      • I’d like to see that defense attorney get trapped in a snare and say no harm done. What a ridiculous and callous thing for him to say. A torturous death to a pet witnessed by a little girl is NO HARM?? what a nut!

      • If you look at Casper, Wy. Tribune; there was a case of the illegal traps set at a subdivision and a family was walking their family of St Benards. and the same thing happened… they were helpless to keep their dogs from immediate choking because you had to have wire cutters to release the snare trap from their necks….. horrific death and I don’t believe they ever caught the SOB that set them…. Wyoming is the Good Old State when it comes to shit like that….. The Great West….

  2. I wish they would outlaw these horrible traps, This poor baby, it’s too bad someone didn’t step in and help her when she was seen roaming around before she got caught in the trap and injured!

    • WHY BECAUSE THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT!!!! There were # beautiful St BERNARDS Killed by illegal traps in CASPER< WYOMING at one time when the family and children were walking them…. the children would have been killed if they had been the first to walk the field… NOT a thing was done… Pull up the story in the Casper Star Tribune..

  3. I agree with Pennydachshund…. trapping should no longer be legal or traps even available. There are just too many people and too many pets that go out to walk and hike. These traps should be outlawed NOW!!!! They are absolutely a horrible, sadistic thing for anyone to use!!! I think anyone who thinks these are ok, need to go out and EXPERIENCE GETTING TRAPPED IN ONE. Then lets see what they say!
