In one of many surgeries ahead, Champ bravely endured his first surgical procedure to repair his jaw. For anyone not familiar with Champ, the dog was found wandering in a rural part of Fort Worth, Texas just five days ago. It is suspected someone stuffed a lit firecracker in the dog’s mouth.  The rescue group from Dallas Dog RRR – Rescue. Rehab. Reform posted a very disturbing photo of the dog. No one knew at the time what happened; the horror and disbelief of his condition was shocking:

“We literally sat back in complete shock, horror and disbelief when we saw his condition. What could possibly have inflicted that kind of injury?? Half of Champs face is nearly ripped off. His left nostril is missing and his jaw is shredded. His teeth look like they have been ground down. Is it possible that someone actually did this to him?,” wrote the group’s moderator on their Facebook page. “He has no other obvious signs of trauma anywhere else on his body. He is emaciated with his ribs protruding. We cannot bear to think what he has lived through. How much pain and suffering and neglect did he have to endure before he was found. We don’t even want to think about it !”

Tragically, veterinarians have figured out how Champ was seriously injured; the damage was not done in a dog fighting arena; the injuries were done from the inside out. Most likely someone exploded a firecracker inside of Champ’s mouth. And on Monday, repairs commenced for a dog who, despite the pain, the prodding and the pokes continually wags his tail and appreciates every tender pat and scratch. So what was done?

“Once inside it was clear the damage had been done by some sort of explosive because there is a hole blown straight thru his gum line, which is where it seems the object was placed. The photo attached show the hole and the extensive surrounding trauma.

Both of his canines had to be removed as they were fractured from the blow. His gums were repaired, but the doctor isn’t sure they will hold so he will be going back on Friday for a recheck and possibly get stitched up again. Yesterday’s surgery was the first of many because he had so much dead tissue surrounding the jaw.”

Champ is now at his foster home, and has been nothing short of a gentleman to both humans and other dogs. Get well soon Champ. We will continue to update your progress. Once healed, Champ will be available for adoption.

  1. Oh, how I hope they find the monster(s) responsible. Not only should they spend some serious time in prison, but should have to pay for every penny of Champ’s vet bills, his food, and other care. For the rest of his life. Personally, I think the same thing should be done to them as they did to the dog, but….. Glad he’s doing better. The photo from after surgery is amazing. I honestly didn’t think they’d be able to save as much of his face as they have. Sending healing prayers.

  2. This just brings me to tears for more than one reason, that poor boy …those morons that hurt him…yet still he has a heart of love and hope. Thank you to all who did the right thing. .shelter, rescue and the doctor and staff and the foster family..thank you for showing Champ not all people are disgusting. …and some of us people have nothing but love and compassion. Thank you thank you thank you. You are a CHAMP though and through.

  3. He is absolutely precious!!! I’ve been following his story since they rescued him. I cry for this baby every time I read an update on him. I pray that he has a great recovery an experiences nothing but the best that life has to offer,he deserves to be pampered and loved like all dogs do. The depravity inflicted on animals never ceases to shock and stun me.

  4. This is terribly sad, but I am glad one of my hero groups Dallas Dogs RRR stepped up to help them. I already donated and I hope many other followers do to! So pleased he is recovering in a foster home and I hope this love bug gets a forever home.

  5. Wishing Chance a good recovery and a life of love and care forever. Wishing who ever did this to him a life of nightmares for the rest of their miserable low evil life.. Karma will follow this person, and I really hope someone would do the same to them.

    • its even worse than you think John. one person restrained him from behind while the other held his mouth shut with his bare hands, fire cracker ignited so The champ could not spit it out.
knowing his hands would be protected from the boxer/pitt bull facial muscular muscle mass.
Laughing as the dog strugled in fear..
This dog was born into a back wood dog fighting community. the lingo of that relm , he is refered to as a “cur” It is a dog that will not fight and will desperatly try to get out of the ring.
They hate an animal who will not blood sport. its an insult to them. it is what makes up 100% of the pit bull bait dogs. they punish them . they are actally the blood lines who can save pit bulls as a breed and make them
sociable and make them functional to society as companion and service animals.
The fight for the breeds salvation is this. agression training is underground and hidden and the sport is profected if not stopped.
all pitt farms must be discovered and seized each dog tried individually for agression those who pass givin to loving families. Those who do not pass unfortanally must be put down. agression was unnaturally beaten into the blood line at can be bread out in 2- generations.
then they will be the most healthy new dog breed and ready to join society in aiding the elderly, para military, serch and rescue etc.I do believe this dog is a work aholic who does not have a job. Yet.

  6. Bless this poor babies heart. Thank goodness he was tough, survived and rescued by RDR…. they are the best! Thank you RDR for helping this baby. I hope the useless excuse for humans who did this are located and thrown in jail FOREVER!!!

  7. These backwoods rednecks should ALL be dragged thru town tied to the back of a truck, then nailed to a tree and used as target practice – useless wastes of flesh and bone. Thank God Champ has been rescued and will recover – these damn dogfighters should be treated as poorly as they treat these dogs – THEY ARE THE MAIN REASON PIT BULLS ARE TREATED LIKE MONSTERS – IT IS THE HUMANS WHO ARE THE MONSTERS NOT THE DOGS.
