Owners went shopping, dog died in parked car

Two days ago, a dog was left to suffer inside of a car which was parked outside of an outlet mall in Vacaville, California. Conditions outside were warm – in fact, the San Francisco Gate has reported that it was 90 degrees when the French bulldog’s owners went inside the air-conditioned building to go shopping – the dog left inside of the vehicle was unable to survive the sweltering heat and died before help arrived.

Though most people realize that the interior temperature in a parked car climbs quickly, the Vacaville Police Department used the tragic situation on June 6 as a reminder of the devastating consequences which can happen if someone chooses to ignore and/or disregard the risk:

While its owners shopped in nearby stores, a French bulldog succumbed to the stress of being in a hot car for an extended period of time. The owner stated she’d parked the vehicle in the shade and left the windows partially down.

Temperatures inside a vehicle can skyrocket to well over 120 degrees, in just 30 mins, when it is only 90 degrees, like today. Many of our days are far hotter than that! Parking near a tree and cracking a window is simply not enough. The owner was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

The police department’s post includes the consequences which people will face for bad decisions as well:

The owner was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

The police department outlined the manner in which a citizen can take matters into his/her own hands if a dog is discovered inside of a hot car:

California citizens may now receive legal immunity in certain situations, but must comply with the following requirements:

1. Determine the car is locked or there is no other reasonable method to remove the animal from the vehicle.
2. Have a reasonable and good faith belief that the animal is in imminent danger if not immediately removed.
3. Contact law enforcement prior to entering the vehicle.
4. Use no more force than necessary to enter the vehicle.
5. If the person does enter the vehicle, they must remain nearby with the animal in a safe location until law enforcement arrives. The person may not leave the scene.

Naturally, certain protections also exist for individuals who rescue children suffering in hot cars, but they are never a free pass to break windows in all situations. If you see a child or animal suffering in a hot car, please call dispatch at (707) 449-5200 and provide specific information, such as the location, vehicle description, and license plate.

  1. Another summer and another rash of idiots that don’t know enough to leave their pets home when they want to shop! Inexcusable! This poor dog didn’t need to die!

  2. How many people saw that dog inside the car and did nothing? Did police issue the scumbags any kind of citation for animal cruelty? ANYONE who does this should be locked inside a hot car while dressed in nothing but wool from head to toe for as long as they forced their dog to do so, and while the windows are up as well.

  3. The “owners” should be locked up in the car just as they did the dog. The only way this is going to stop is if HUMANS feel the same things that animals do. They only get a slap on the wrists when they are charged. This will never change unless the sentences are made MORE SEVERE.

  4. This ignorant woman should NEVER have another animal again – her lack of concern for her dog being stuck in a car while she casually shopped and left her dog to die only shows she has the common sense of a rock – this pisses me off so much and I hope the judge gives her a severe tongue lashing and some jail time – it is ALL her fault this innocent dog died a horrible death. LEAVE YOUR ANIMALS AT HOME WHEN YOU GO SHOPPING – you dimwit.

  5. I CERTAINLY hope these Moronic People Enjoyed their Shopping trip… My Vet states that short nosed dogs, Pugs, French Bull’s , Boxer’s have and even harder time than normal length dogs in the heat breathing… BY this DAY and AGE People Should know this is NOT RIGHT!!!! I HOPE they are FINED enough that it HURTS their pockets & the monies are donated to EDUCATIONAL SERVICE MESSAGES on LEAVING ANIMAL”S ALONE IN VEHICLES!!!

  6. Excellent!! If they would start arresting all of these uncaring, idiot people, maybe they would stop leaving their pets locked in hot cars. It makes absolutely no sense why this happens. You are out with your pet, and you just decide…..hey, lets go shopping!! TAKE YOUR PETS HOME before the shopping bug bites you. This is such a wasted, careless, uncaring death of a fur baby.

  7. How many times do we have to say….NEVER EVER LEAVE A PET IN A CAR IN WARM/HOT WEATHER??? What is it going to take to get it thru the many assholes heads??? I mean it’s COMMON SENSE!! The brain dead owner will most likely only be fined,I hope and pray the owner SUFFERS IMMENSE PAINFUL GUILT FOR KILLING AN INNOCENT TRAPPED DOG!!! OMG! This pisses me off!!!

  8. Every year, in the summer, the idiots leave their dog’s in a hot car has to be reminded NOT to do that, how stupid can they be???

  9. PEOPLE CAN BE IDIOTS ABOUT LEAVING THEIR DOGS IN A HOT CAR!!!! This woman’s photo should be hitting social media. Rest in peace little dog.

  10. How horrible evil ugly people these are I hope they die in a hot car ???? & suffer poor doggie why did not someone call the police & they could have rescued the animal why evil creeps bg

  11. Why did these evil people let doggie suffer I hope they die in a car & suffer a horrible death poor doggie why did not anyone call police @ report this doggie why what is wrong with evil people bg

  12. Flat nosed breeds, like the French Bull Dogs have difficulty breathing in normal circumstances. I guess that very expensive dog means nothing to it’s owner. I want to know where an idiot like this has enough money to pay for a a french bulldog. She is too stupid to live. Poor dog.

  13. Those rotten assholes need to be sat in a car and left there for however long they left their poor baby!!!

  14. No-one is this stupid! It’s 90% outside and much higher in a parked vehicle. This poor animal left to suffer while she what, hunt down a new pair of heels. I have no sympathy for her.. This is neglect and glad she was charged with cruelty. If you have your head out of your ass you have heard of these stories and it always on the news or billboards about protecting our animals in record heat. So she can’t say she didn’t know, but if she didn’t hear, couldn’t she feel the heat outside. NO EXCUSE. Tired of the lame excuses.
