The wild fires of Santa Rosa spread so quickly, there was barely anytime for the Weaver family to escape – the flames closed in and there was no choice but to evacuate. And from this once enchanted part of California’s beautiful wine country, families had no choice – it was life or death and time to just get into their vehicles and leave all of their personal possessions behind.

It wasn’t known why the family dog Izzy ran away the very moment Jack Weaver and his family were ready to leave. They desperately called out to her, but Izzy was gone. And so they left their home and their dog behind with tear-filled eyes and empty hearts. Becky Jean Widen posted the story on Facebook:

“Just a heartwarming story to share in the middle of all this devastation. My parents woke up with flames surrounding their house in Wikiup Bridgeway and had seconds to get out. In the chaos of trying to escape, my parent’s dog Izzy ran from them. My mom couldn’t chase after her without risking her own life.”

The dangers were all around them, but what would become of Izzy?

“They had to drive through walls of flames and across a burning bridge to get to Mark West Springs Road and to safety. They lost everything, but my mom was most devastated about leaving Izzy.  My brother and husband were determined to try to get back to my parents property to see if by some miracle Izzy survived. They were turned away by police officers, but if you know my brother Jack or husband Patrick…neither one likes to be told no. They ended up hiking just under 3 miles to my parent’s property. This video shows the last part of their hike up to my parent’s house. It’s a little long, but the ending is worth the watch.”

The video shows the burnt out trees as the men labor towards their family home. Calling Izzy, the men make it to the gate of the the property which was still standing although the entire structure of their house was gone – crackling ruins and just burnt out memories were all that remained. But all was not lost; it had to have been a miracle. There was Izzy! She bounced happily towards her family – tail wagging in pure delight.

“When she came running around – you can probably hear it in my voice – we were shocked and ecstatic,” stated Jack.

The video continues to garner shares from across the country and has been putting smiles on faces in spite of the losses suffered by so many people and their pets and livestock. Interestingly, there was not a burn on Izzy. And now she is back where she belongs.

  1. Citizens nearby–PLEASE take some dogs in from the burned area. If you have a little room in your home you would be saving lives.

  2. I only wish they had filmed more of the happy reunion, and her reunion with her mom. So glad Izzy made it. My heart is breaking for those who have lost so much.

  3. Someone in Heaven watched over Izzy. So happy she is safe and reunited with her family. My prayers go out to the victims of the deadly fire storm.
