A California family’s dog is presumed to be dead after a mountain lion ventured into their residence during the night and made off with the pet. According to Monday’s CBS San Francisco News, the frightening incident took place early Monday morning at a residence in Pescadero.

The wild animal apparently made its way into the home through a bedroom’s french door which had been left ajar to allow for a cool night breeze. The dog, a 15-pound Portuguese Podengo named Lenora, was in the bedroom, sleeping with the family’s child.

The homeowner, Victoria Fought, has stated that she heard her dog barking around 3 a.m. and when she went to investigate, she saw the mountain lion’s shadow as it entered the room and grab Lenora from the bed.

The local authorities were contacted and tracks, believed to be from a mountain lion, were found – there has been no sign of Lenora, just a few spots of blood found near the home’s door.

Area game wardens have stated that they do not intend to set traps for the mountain lion, and residents in the area have been advised to be aware of the potential danger the big cats may pose.

  1. I don’t know how anyone goes to bed at night with their doors ajar. Mine are locked tight! I wouldn’t even be thinking about a mountain lion sneaking in my house I would be worried about the 2 legged human POS’s. They are lucky their child wasn’t hurt. Poor little dog never had a chance.

  2. Absolutely frightening! If not the dog, it would undoubtedly have been their child. If you live in mountain lion country, why would you even think of leaving your doors open for any reason?

  3. This is so so sad that poor dog never stood a chance.I agree I would never go to bed without locking all doors and windows.Someone I work with recently had her dogs in her back yard and woke up to find they had been ripped apart by a mountain lion.Dogs should be kept inside in areas where there are mountain lions.I just hope the poor dogs died instantly and didn’t suffer. This made so sad that I cried and I don’t even know these dogs. How heartbreaking That dog saved that childs life by being there.People please don’t leave your dogs in your yards and make sure that you keep all doors and windows closed.

  4. I can’t believe the door was kept open when you know there are wild animals around. I have such pity for the poor dog it could have been their child. Hey leave the door open, maybe the cat will strike again. Some people just don’t have brains.

  5. How stupid can you be to leave your door ajar?! I don’t care where you live that was just plain stupidity!!!! And now your poor dog paid with his life. Please don’t get another dog or cat.

  6. OMG! That is horrifying! I wish I didn’t read this story,it’s so scary and tragic! Why the heck would someone go to bed and not close and lock all their door! So sad

  7. How awful! But, I agree with you guys. Why are doors left open period especially if there are mountain lions nearby! If you want a cool breeze, buy a fan! Poor Lenora, RIP.

  8. No need to say, “why would they have?” Their lesson is clearly learned in a very hard way that will surely haunt the owners with guilt over it for a long time. It’s a tragic, freak occurance. My sympathies to the family for their loss of their dog. Everybody makes mistakes, and sometimes there’s no way to know the danger. Let’s not add insult to their injury anymore.

  9. RIP Lenora. Your humans failed you. They did not watch over you and keep you safe from large predators as they were supposed to…………..

Where I live, in a suburban area, it’s not just coyotes or mountain lions that attack small pets, it’s also large birds of prey. My neighbors lost their cat to a large hawk (I found her remains in my yard ? & wish I could “unsee” it)……. we have 2 raptor migrations each year, so vigilance is essential…….

If you have small pets, YOU MUST keep them safe from predators (animal AND avian)…… it’s YOUR JOB as a pet parent………

You MUST keep all doors and windows closed so an opportunist predator can’t harm a furbaby or human…..
