It had been on Wednesday morning when Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs announced to their supporters a small beagle was in critical need of rescue after arriving at the New York City Animal Care Centers with a huge ulcerated tumor – one so large volunteers were taken aback and in shock.

“The tumor is one of the worst we have ever seen on a dog before. This poor animal suffered for a long long time, carrying around this huge tumor which is attached to his head. How can anyone look at a dog like this, and not do anything to help him? We are completely appalled and heartbroken that Kratos suffered for so long in this condition,” the organization posted on their Facebook page.

According to the shelter, the eight-year-old pooch now dubbed Kratos, was brought in as a stray, however it is suspected whoever brought him into the shelter knew far more than they claimed. How is it that this dog went unnoticed in New York City – so apparently neglected and abused for such a long period of time as this tumor was allowed to grow without giving this dog any medical attention? Surely he must have been outdoors on a walk or in a backyard with neighbors around; someone must have seen him.

Kratos was rushed to the rescue’s vet partner for immediate treatment. Medical experts stated the dog had been suffering for months; the tumor was festering with puss, blood and had a rancid odor. Fortunately, testing has determined the growth is not attached to either his ear nor has it impacted his eye. Over the weekend, Kratos was administered intravenous antibiotics and fluids to help build his immune system and thwart the fear of the dog becoming septic. He continues to be on pain and anti-inflammatory medication to make him comfortable and alleviate the pain.

Surgery is scheduled for Monday. Volunteers tell us he has been eating well and has been in good spirits.

“He will never be hurt or abused again!! The shelter is investigating this case, and we can not go into details at this time about the investigation, but we will certainly keep everyone posted when we can. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. No animal should ever suffer the way he has! There is no excuse for his condition.”

  1. OMG!!!! How could anyone not help this dog? How could anyone possibly live with themselves and not help?? Thank you for stepping up to the plate to help this baby. Please keep us updated. Prayers

  2. It’s amazing how people can turn a blind eye, allowing poor Krato to suffer with this large tumor attached to his head for so long without medical attention. I’m sure the POS owner abandoned Krato rather than dealing with the Vet expense.

  3. If there was a way to find this scum, he should be given beaten about his head with a baseball bat, and then left to suffer until he dies. I know I am being cruel, but is what this person allowed to happen to this sweet dog ok?

  4. How can anyone have ignored this sweet dog who obviously needed help?! People suck! Positive thoughts going out for Kratos’s speedy recovery.

  5. Kratos deserved MUCH better than to be treated like a disposable object and I hope his surgery is successful and he completely recovers – whoever neglected him deserves the remainder of their life be one of misery – they are among the many animal abusers who have no soul.

  6. Shame on you or whoever is the owner. Makes me sick the least you could do was bring him to a vet. You should never be allowed another animal as a pet!

  7. Please update!! He was scheduled for surgery yesterday….. Did he make it? Is he OK? Please update on this baby. I hope his owners can be located and HELD RESPONSIBLE for this abuse!!!!!!!
