It had been  a few horrible days for Honey – the frightened dog stuck in the bottom of a Charlotte area septic tank filled with raw sewage. Honey had been clinging to a pipe trying desperately to stay afloat while entangled in black cables. On Monday, the dog was rescued.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control first responders rescued the dog after she was found 12 feet down clinging to the pipe barely four feet above raw sewage. She had been “shaking and crying.”

“We had a call for service for what was initially said was a dog in a well,” CMPD Animal Care and Control spokesperson Melissa Knicely stated. “They heard barking. Once everybody got involved it certainly became a little bit more, it was actually a septic tank.”

Witnesses told police the dog had fallen through the top of the septic tank, and she had likely been struggling for days. Good Samaritans were able to get a rope around the dog to help her stay afloat. Once electricity was turned off to the pump, the Midland Fire Department used a pole to remove the wires from Honey and were then able to carefully hoist her up.

“As soon as she got out, she just kind of leaped into our officer’s arms Melissa said. “It’s almost like she was reaching out to be saved.”

Honey was taken to Animal Care and decontaminated and treated with antibiotics. She suffered from bruises on her abdomen where the cables had been, but despite her minor injuries, she has been described as shy but very sweet. Honey will be spending time on stray hold, but if her owner doesn’t come forward, the one-year-old pit bull mix will be ready for a new home.

Anyone interested in adopting Honey is asked to contact CMPD Animal Care and Control.

  1. PLEASE some kind person step up and adopt Honey – she has suffered enough being stuck in a septic tank – these contraptions are obviously dangerous and need to be covered. Honey is a beautiful do who will enrich someone’s life and be a faithful and loving companion. Give her the forever home she so well deserves.

  2. Honey has “Spirt” and the will to live a full and happy life::: I hope a rescue will step up and get her the Hell out of the South!!!

  3. Thanks for those who initially found her and helped keep her afloat and thanks to the rescue team of officers who finally got her out. What a sweet girl and she will make a wonderful member of someones family.

  4. Why is a septic system left open like this in the first place? I hope this poor pup will find a good home and someone who will keep her away from harm.
