In West Palm Beach, Florida, officers from the West Palm Beach Fire Rescue found a two-year-old mixed breed dog chained to a tree as they arrived at a brush fire off of Australian Avenue in the West Palm Beach area earlier this week. According to the Palm Beach Post, Fire Rescue Captain Gregg Gordon and other firefighters heard a dog barking amid the bushes and thickets and subsequently found the small brown and white dog with burns all over his body.

“The little guy was burned up pretty good. Even when we grabbed him, he was very distressed. I was concerned whether he would live,” stated Captain Gordon.

Firefighter Marcos Orozca cut the dog’s chain to free him and picked him up gently in his arms. Now dubbed Smokey, the pooch is recovering at the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue and has suffered serious burns to his body and hind legs. It is not clear what further treatments Smokey will need. The good news however – is Captain Gordon has offered to foster Smokey until the dog can find a permanent home.

According to Animal Care and Control in West Palm Beach, Smokey was originally adopted from the shelter – his name was Bologna, but his family lost their home. The dog had been living in an area known where homeless people gathered. Smokey may have been used as a guard dog.

“We’re keeping out fingers crossed that he’s good with other dogs,” Captain Gordon stated.

Many thanks to our firemen – their service, their compassion and their love for our four legged friends.

  1. So who left Smokey tied to a tree to burn to death? The homeless owners? I’m so glad they saved their own worthless butts and left a little dog to die! Prayers for Smokey for a full recovery and a new loving home!
