The Toledo Area Humane Society has launched an investigation into the heartbreaking death of a dog earlier this week, found on a porch in central Toledo “frozen solid.”
According to the Toledo Blade, the female dog had curled up on the porch trying to stay warm in front of a home located in the 1000 block of King Street. Outdoor temperatures have remained bitter cold in the low teens – light snow falling as the fierce winds howled.
Animal cruelty investigator Megan Brown does not know how long the dog had been left outdoors, but the future for another dog found inside of the home appears more promising. The underweight male dog could be seen through a window visibly shivering. After authorities spotted the dog, they obtained a search warrant and were able to rescue him. Both dogs are American bulldog breeds – the three-year-old female who died was named Nanas and the four-year-old male – Haze
Victor Vallejo Sr., 40, is the owner of the dogs and stated he had been unaware of any problems and had left both dogs inside of the home a few days prior. The utilities in the house had recently been shut off. Admitting to have fallen on bad times, Vallejo stated the dogs had food and water, although he had not been staying at the house.
Officer Brown, however had a different story as to the welfare of the dogs. According to the officer neither dog had any food or water. Although the porch had a roof and there had been a blanket left for her, there was no shelter from the bitter cold.
Haze is now in the care of the shelter and is expected to make a full recovery. It is likely Vallejo will be charged with animal cruelty.
Rest in peace Nanas.
