Dog died after bees attacked

A Florida family’s dog begged to get inside as an angry swarm of bees viciously attacked – tragically, the stings from hundreds of bees proved to be fatal to the 45-pound dog. According to WPTV News, the horrifying situation took place in the backyard of a Boca Raton family’s home last Wednesday.

The dog, Delilah, belonged to the Leonard family, whose children bore witness to the terrible scene. Rebecca, one of the children, described what she saw:

You wouldn’t even be able to tell what color she was. There were so many bees on her, they were relentless.”

She added,

She was jumping up at the door handle and chewing on it, trying to get us to open the door, and we couldn’t because there were just hundreds of bees swarming around her.

The dog who died in her family’s arms had a rough life – she had been abandoned in a dumpster when she was just two weeks old…her death last week was untimely and agonizing. Delilah’s family called a bee keeper after their dog died – they found out that their neighbors have bee hives and that a feral bee colony was living in a tree above those hives. It is unknown if the killer bees came from the neighbor’s hives or from the hive in the tree.

  1. I read about this earlier and I must say I would of been bit too because I would of been outside trying to help my dog,I would of grabbed the water hose and full force watered my dog down! I would NEVER been able to live with myself if I did nothing! My heart breaks for this family but my heart breaks more for this poor dog! For me it would of been instinctual to help my pet without taking the time to ponder my own well being! But that’s me,I can’t speak for anyone but myself! This makes me cry,the fact that this poor dog tried to get help and nobody could help her! RIP DELILAH

    • I would have done the same thing you said – grab the water hose and done SOMETHING. Even if I wasn’t successful in saving her life, I would have TRIED. I could not stand by and do nothing. I’m in tears as I’m typing this, knowing that this poor door tried to get inside the house. RIP Delilah.

      • Since it was a child who described what happened it is quite possible they were home alone when it happened. I would think a child might not know what to do or how to handle it and they were probably terrified, since they are children.

      • All that dog will ever know is he looked into their eyes desperate for help pleading and they held the door closed and said no.
        We cant get stung.
i hope their neighbors and friends sock it to em.

    • I was thinking the exact same thing! Get a hose, fill pans with water, spray insect spray…DO SOMETHING, DON”T JUST STAND THERE WHILE YOUR DOG DIES AN AGONIZING DEATH!!!!!!

    • Yes I would be in the hospital right now recovering from the bee stings (I swell up like a balloon from them) but I wouldn’t have been able to watch my poor dog trying to get into the house without doing something. How heartbreaking to lose your dog like this. SMH

    • Totally agree ! They are mine to protect .. if the kids were out I wonder if the first instinct is to leave them outside covered in bees !

    • I agree with you 100% !mtgats exactly what I thought wh n I read this…I would have grabbed the hose???? I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself just watching ???????? rip sweet delliah????????

    • Cynthia Como, I AGREE 100%! I just couldn’t luve with myself if I hadn’t done all in my power to help my pet. My pets ARE FAMILY TOO!!! That obviously was not the case here. Even though I’m allergic to bee stings and carry an Epi Pen I would still have tried tohelp my dog. I can’t imagi e just WATCHING this unfold before my eyes an not intervening. SO HORRIBLY SAD……. R.I.P. DELILAH.

    • Totally agree who just sits by and sees their pet going through hell. Id have thrown buckets of water got a sheet done something. I would of course made sute the children were safe in a room on own

  2. Hard to believe the next door neighbors would keep Africanized bees, but surely they knew they were there if they keep bees. I can’t imagine those children watching their dog being attacked like that and how powerless they must have felt. Why was Delilah out without someone anyway? This is horrible. RIP Delilah.

    • im with you. i am beginning to see maybe some balony sandwich. no one keeps killer beas especially a pro bee keeper. no proof they are killer bees. the scarry stories from decades ago have been way out of propottionthey were not as dangerous, as many and have mostly been bread with gental honey bees. even if it wasent a honey bee. Why attack a dog if it was in another yard and safe up in a tree. Im afraid the dog died some other way. when have you ever in your life heard of a dog being attacked by bees. balony sandwich. Its beginning to sound like a snow job and a cover up fron someother accident.
And why was the dog alone in a yard? When was the last time Killer bees were even descovered and was people or animals in the area attacked ?

  3. No excuse.
    And who said killer bees?
    They most likely were not.
The dogs first mistake and the mistake of most people is standing swatting or standing trying to get in a car or a door
I learned this the hard way.
    When bees attack you run.
    It’s that simple.
You run strait, you run fast.
I learned that with a bunch of kids at 6yrs old 6kids, they panic swatted I ran all the way home Never looked back sat down for dinner and not one bite.
none were st school for days and one kid went to the hospital.
Bees are slow anyone can out run them .that’s all they want is for you to leave the hive.
It’s a weird phonomon that people and animals stand and swat. And sometimes die.
What this family did is ,
    Well I’m stuck for words

  4. I would not have just stood there and done nothing I would have grabbed a plastic bag put a couple holes in it to breath , put it over my head and tied it. Then grab a winter coat and gloves and run like hell to help poor little Delilah. You would be surprised just how fast you would move. But to just stand there and not even try, shame on you the family…

  5. I can’t believe they didn’t do anything to help him. How sad. Please don’t let them get another dog. They don’t deserve to have another dog.

  6. What a POS fsmily!!!! That poor dog 🙁 how tragic, what a horrible death while they just sat there and watched!!! Animal cruelty

  7. If it was your child, wouldn’t you do whatever it takes to save the child? For me there’s no difference between a dog and child.. As far as I’m concern, your dog is part of your family and every effort should have been made to save this dog. RIP sweet girl……you’re free now.

  8. RIP doggy! Yr owner n family will not b happy in their life…, sorry to hear yr die cos they dnt help u! They should not get another pet!! ????

  9. ANOTHER BUNCH OF PISS ASS ANIMAL OWNERS. THEY COULD HAVE SAVED THIS DOG A BUNCH OF BASTARDS HOPE THEY DON’T GET ANOTHER DOG SCUMBAGS.

  10. I guess the damn kids should be glad it wasn’t one of them “Sorry honey, but you know bee stings make mommy look fat ” sorry POS!!!

  11. I am terrified of bees, but if they had swarmed my dog, I would have done anything I could have to save her life. Can’t believe that they didn’t think their dog was worth saving. Shame on them, they watched there dog die a horrible death because they couldn’t get over their own fear.

  12. effing asshole kids could of opened and closed door quick enough for dog to get in,instead the pieces of shit watch their dog die a slow agonizing death,I only hope Karma bites them real bad RIP Delilah ,Rot in hell to the rest

  13. I would have risked ANY and EVERY peril, to save my precious companion! I hope they live with this horrifying memory etched into their minds, daily – for the rest of their pathetic lives!

  14. I would had done the same thing use a water hose and put it on full force to try and help the dog. BUT!!!! Saying that what would had happened that some of the bees got inside of the house and started stinging the kids and other people who were in the house at the same time. What would you had done then. BUT!!!! saying that it must have been awful for the kids to have watched their dog getting stung to death. So sending thoughts and prayers to the family and may Delilah RIP sadly missed but never forgotten

  15. How do you stand there and watch your fur baby being stung by thousands of bees and FREAKING DO NOTHING?!?!? I would have run around the house and got a hose and hosed her off and called 911 for help! I hope this family is no longer allowed to have an anima.!

  16. I would have grabbed anything, hairspray, a hose, a blanket just anything to try and save her. How awful. I don’t know how the family just watched this happen. This was a very painful death for that poor dog.

  17. Okay, reading the original article (linked in this one), the kids – teenagers – were home, but the mother had left for a bit. Not sure where the father was, if there even is one. The kids let the dog out and it wasn’t long before this happened. I can understand, perhaps, the kids were teens, but not sure just how old. HOWEVER, now the family has a donation page up and is working on raising $5000. They claim is it to fight for stricter laws. Also, the vet bills and getting flyers printed up to spread around the town. Sounds a bit fishy to me. I could see perhaps asking for help covering the vet bill, but I’m sure it was nowhere near that much. https://www.gofundme.com/3yr622w

  18. RAID!! Even if the dog was let inside, it would have been easier to kill bees as they would be dispersed. Blankets, towels, Newspapers, magazines…all could have been implemented by all humans present. What a tragic story. I wonder if the children had allergies to bee stings which is why they wouldn’t let their poor dog inside?

  19. What a disquieting family. They stood and watched their dog be killed and did nothing. Suppose one of the kids was outside would they of just watched the child die? I hope none of them ever know the love of a dog. The dog deserved better that to have a family like that.

  20. Awful. Would not care what the risk. I could not stand there and watch my dog BEG me for help as I stood there and watched it tortured to death. AWFUL.

  21. My question is why didnt they let her in the house? This didnt need to happen, there is much here that doesnt make sense! Why did the bees attack this poor dog? Why were there bee hives next door when its apparent those people have no clue about keeping bees!

  22. I’m sorry but I’m not digging this family. I don’t give a damn how many bees where around, I could not sit back and watch my dog get attacked and just stay in the safety of my home. I can’t help but think they are cowards . They could have done something to help. How this dog must have felt as she begged her owners for help. May the after life be a much more peaceful and loving place for you, sweet dog, You were failed in this life. I just couldn’t live with myself if I did something so cold.

      • I CANNOT get this horror off my mind! I tried to be nice when I commented on this previously…….BUT THESE PEOPLE WERE WRONG,THESE PEOPLE WERE SELFISH,AND MOST OF ALL THESE SO CALLED OWNERS WERE EXTREMELY CRUEL!!!!! For me it is pure unadulterated INSTINCT to make every attempt to save my beloved pet,I would NOT of taken even a micro second to ponder my safety because it would take less than a micro second for me to come to my beloved dogs rescue!! I sure hope that anyone with any working brain cells DO NOT give these asinine jerks any money, for what they did was immoral and so very shameful! Talk about COLD HEARTED!!!! I’m having such a hard time putting this post out of my mind, mostly because this poor poor dog tried to get inside to save itself! SO SO VERY UPSETTING!! SMH

      • Cynthia Como, this one is haunting me too, I couldn’t have just stood there and watched my poor dog trying to get into the house and done nothing either. Now to find out they are seeking $5,000 for what, I have no idea, makes this even worse. They want money sue the neighbors who were harboring the bees, don’t be asking for donations when you stood there and watched you pet die and did nothing until it was too late!

  23. Thought the DAM Kids and Mother and Farther out and Lack the Door on them and Let The BEES Kill all of that Family and Let them Burn in HELL.

  24. Why would anyone donate money to a family that stood by and watched their baby die a horrible death??? I’m allergic to bees and would still go save my babies!!!!!

  25. Made me cry, the suffering that poor baby had to go thru….couldn’t they have sprayed something at the bees to deter them…and I blame the neighbors for obviously not letting their neighbors know they had beehives….everything about this story is so wrong….I could not have watched my furbaby get stung like that without doing something….poor water out the door, spray windex on them….surely something could have been done…..she was begging to get in & all the family did was watch….

  26. What an uncaring “family” to stand and watch their dog pleading to get in. She already had a rough start in life and in my opinion, they murdered her. They are pathetic people.

  27. I would have been stung…..why didn’t they throw water out the door, go out & get the water hose……this family is sooooo wrong……..karma will get them…….you just stand there and look at your fur baby being stung……I could not have done nothing……..Run Free sweet baby…….your life was ended too soon& your family betrayed you.

  28. FUCK that family!!! They don’t have the right to cry! Water hose or anything of the sort could of remotely helped! But them bitch made people are the types to look your family in the face tell them sorry and watch them burn when they could’ve saved them. I hope this cultish family get stung to death themselves FUCK you die slow!…Poor Dog???? the abuse can be in any form.
