A Texas man who headed to the Houston area to do his part to rescue families stranded in flood waters stemming from Hurricane Harvey wound up losing his beloved dog. According to Fox Houston, David Scherff and his bulldog “Frank,” went to Katy to do what he could to help the residents who were in trouble.

Scherff told Fox Houston about the surreal situation he encountered upon his arrival:

“We met up with a friend of mine, got the boat, went to Houston. We started doing what we could. It was unreal. Everything was underwater, raining real hard. Time was of the essence when we got there. It really was.”

In the midst of helping, the boat that Scherff and Frank was on stopped with a sudden jolt after hitting something in the water – Frank was thrown overboard and disappeared. The worst was confirmed when Frank’s body was found, after extensive searching, days later in the same area where he was thrown out of the boat.

A memorial fundraiser has been created in memory of Frank – click here to read more.

  1. My heart grieves for your loss of precious Frank, but I have to ask: What were you possibly thinking???

Enough companions were jeopardized already, without adding Frank – a species and specific animal NOT trained nor physically equipped to handle such dire conditions – to that list!

In addition, restraint precautions were not implemented, all but assuring disastrous results…

“The road to hell is paved with good intentions”: Your particular hell will be in knowing you could have prevented Frank’s unfortunate and unnecessary death…

Personally, I don’t know how I could live with that…

You are both in my thoughts and prayers…

  2. My sincere condolences to David Scherff for his loss of Frank. It breaks my heart that they were trying to help and he loses his best friend. Rest in peace Frank, you were loved and will be missed.

  3. RIP Frank. I’m truly sorry for David’s loss. However, David should have known bulldogs are no swimmers, they can’t even float. Frank should have worn a life jacket. My Lab is a natural swimmer and she wears a life jacket, when we’re on a boat.

  4. I posted the same thing as you did Stephen first thing this morning. ONLY MY post was not posted on this site… I must be on the bad boy list since I said I was disappointed over the bringing of dogs into the USA when we euthanized them daily. I was on this site with Penny and Cheryl prior to them switching here… apparently I appear to controversial for them… will be surprised if I see this posted!!! At least I will now than not to waste my time…

  5. RIP Frank. I’m so sorry for the loss of David’s best friend. I can’t & won’t chastise him for his decision to bring Frank with him. Things sometimes don’t work out the way it was intended. I don’t think anyone thought the situation would take the turn it did. Mistakes seem to have a way of taking over. This poor man has to live with this sad episode in his life & the loss of his 4 legged friend. May God Bless him during this sad time.

    • Thanks. I so agee. Who are we to judge in such a time. He has to live with that for the rest of his life. No one here on earth is perfect. RIP Frank

  6. Thoughts and prayers for your loss…..did he have on a life vest? Was he strapped in at all? Thank you for your efforts…but maybe your pet would have been safer at home.

  7. I don’t understand how he brought the dog without a life jacket, and thinking that he’ll be okay in this condition that it’s flood and chaos the worst thing you can do is bring your dog without a life jacket. It’s a mistake, and he should have thought about their safety too first to include his dog. It’s sad, but this is a lesson of before you save someone else, make sure you are also taking all precautions and protection first such as a simple life jacket!

  8. Such a heartbreaking story. Everyone on the water should have life jackets on. Dogs too. Honestly, did Frank need to go to Katy TX? RIP big guy.

  9. RIP Frank, why did you human take you there, and if it was important to him to have you there, he should have given you a life jacket. Prayers.

  10. RIP Frank. Your death was such an unnecessary tragedy. There were so many animals and people who lived there who needed rescuing. Why bring you along into a dangerous situation? You should have been at home, safe, where you belonged and you would still be alive today. Many humans are good and mean well, but lack good judgment.

  11. David, we are all thinking of you and Frank. You were two soul mates and Frank was happy to be with you. Tragic what happened, but instead of some saying why was he there or why no life jacket, learn from David’s loss. That would be a tribute to a dog who loved his daddy.
