Update 5/12/17: Adopted!

Curled up in a ball in a shelter cage, the tiny dog has no name; no one knows what her story may have been before she arrived at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday.  On Saturday, the one-year-old Chihuahua’s mandatory hold period for a stray pet was over; still no one came to adopt her.

And then talented amateur photographer John Hwang came by to help. Hwang lives close to the shelter and visits frequently to take photos of needy dogs; then he posts their pictures online hoping to help them find homes. As he has done so many times, the volunteer’s poignant photos capture a fleeting moment in time; perhaps bonding that ethereal relationship only he can see behind the camera lens. No doubt, Hwang carefully studies his subject before quietly approaching:

“She looked timid and withdrawn curled up in a ball inside the cold and lifeless cell. When she noticed me she came right up to the fence. I gently caressed her face, and she wagged her tail. She tried to squeeze her whole body through the fencing, but only managed to get her tiny head through. All she wanted was to be in loving arms,” John wrote under the little dog’s photos on his Facebook page.

You can also call the shelter at (626) 962-3577. Her animal ID number is A5056492

There are many dogs that need to be adopted. Why shop for your next best friend when you can adopt?

  1. Once again, these are not “shelters.” They are impound facilities, or pounds. I will share, with the photo of her curled up inside a cement block. If a person was being kept in such an environment, it would not be called a shelter. It would be called a concentration camp.

      • This is so heartbreaking…and all the while, greedy idiotic breeders and sadistic puppy millers keep on making more more more MORE puppies for sale to unscrupulous dealers or just anyone who can come up with a downpayment. Such treatment of these sensitive lives surely means those people have hell to pay, probably to be reborn as homeless puppies set for whatever fate comes along, to see what it’s like from the other side. No one should buy from breeders, only adopt and rescue, period. That little dog’s face says it ALL. She should not be in some godawful concentration/death camp. None of them should. Breeders and puppy millers should pay the price for all the “surplus” dogs, not the innocent animals!

  2. Who wouldn’t want this precious little girl patiently waiting for her family to come. If I lived close I would go save her precious life. There has to be a local hero that wants a loving companion. Please share her to give her a chance!

  3. OMG! HEARTBREAKING!! This special, sweet, beautiful girl is making me cry and shreadfing my heart and soul! It’s like nobody values or respects her little life! Most days I’m in such angst over the fact that society mostly views all these little souls as disposable. I do not understand and I will never understand and that’s because there is absolutely no desire by this country to sit down and try to implement solutions to this awful overwhelming problem of the dog over population! The fact that this country KILLS 4 million dogs every year literally makes me nauseous! God bless all the rescues and animal advocates out there that work tirednessly every single day to fight for change and to save as many lives as possible! In the mean time America stays in neutral with the lack of good laws and judicial system that has no desire to start taking a hard stance against the abuse, neglect, torture and killing of innocent dogs! Humans domesticated the dog and unfortunately for the dog it was the worse thing that could of ever happened to them!! The human race should of left the canine species in the wild where I think they would of had a better existance! I will not be able to get this beautiful, nameless, wonderful dog out of my mind! OH GOD SOMEONE PLEASE SAVE HER PLEASE! How I wish I could!!
