Hardly a day goes by without a 911 emergency for the volunteers at Rescue Dogs Rock NYC.  Thursday afternoon was no different; Rupert’s near death story was told, and had it not been for some quick intervention, the one-year-old puppy’s life would have been over.

Rupert had been one of the lucky ones, or so he thought when he was adopted by a family from the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) in November. The energetic, six-month-old puppy happily frolicked into his new owners’ arms – positive his young life would be one of love and care by his new family. Sadly, that was all too short-lived. Just days ago, Rupert was returned to BARCS as a skeleton; he could not stand or walk and was thought to have been close to death. According to the adopter, their puppy would eat, but he just didn’t gain weight. When adopted, Rupert weighed 33 pounds; when brought back to the shelter, the emaciated puppy weighed 22 pounds.

Upon arrival, BARCS rushed the dog to their veterinarian, and there he remained until Thursday because his condition had not been stable. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC stepped forward for this emergency, and Rupert has been transferred to the organization’s emergency care veterinarian partner.

“This is beyond upsetting but we are happy to report there is an investigation,” Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC posted on their Facebook under the disturbing photos of the severely emaciated puppy.  “Now let’s hope something comes of it!”

Rupert has a long road ahead of him and he is not out of the woods.

    • MEGHAN,ARE U FOR REAL????? This puppy is from Maryland, this AMAZING rescue group is in NYC!! Are u new to the world of animal cruelty???? This happens in EVERY CITY,EVERY SINGLE DAY IN EVERY STATE IN AMERICA!!! Tho animal cruelty is suppose to be crime when these abusers are caught THEY ARE NEVER EVER PUNISHED!!!! Once again……THANK YOU, THANK YOU RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC YOU ARE AMAZING AND COMPASSIONATE AND ALWAYS GO ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR THE MOST HORRIFING CASE OF ANIMAL CRUELTY OUT THERE!!!!

  1. So he wouldn’t eat? I’ve never seen a puppy who wouldn’t eat unless he wasn’t being fed! Even my finicky eater, whose food I have to change once in awhile because he gets tired of it, eats when he’s hungry after refusing to eat very much, but he DOES eat enough to keep himself going!

Lock this scum up for as long as possible, WITHOUT the benefit of food……..

  2. Disgusting!! I hope these people feel the pain of social media. Where are their photos and names. Let social media be their punishment, as well. God bless this dog. I donate monthly to this organization. Even one donation helps puppies like Rupert. Please keep us informed. I would adopt him in a minute.

  3. I do not believe for a minute that this puppy wouldn’t eat this person has starved this poor baby and should never be allowed to own another animal despicable scum please keep updated

  4. So they had him 6 months & wouldn’t eat? I say BULL…..if that was the case why didn’t you bring him in sooner…..there’s something ver wrong with this picture…..I pray they don’t have any other animals.

  5. They said he WOULD eat but that he just didn’t put any weight on. Well, even if that is true you take the pup to the vets long before he gets into this state. Despicable people.

  6. Apparently these so called ‘owners’ never heard of a veterinarian – since they did nothing but dump him back into a shelter – another example of people who should NEVER be allowed to own an animal. And, again, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC came thru – I hope this little guy recovers and gets the safe loving home he obviously never had.

  7. First off! 1) the people that took this dog in: Adopted under who’s supervision? ARE CHARGES being brought up on them 2) whos flipping this Bill? 3) why are people having to plegde at your mistake? 3) CONDITION OF THIS DOG AN UP-DATE? 5/19/18

  8. If he truly wouldn’t eat or did eat but didn’t gain weight, then you take him to the VETERINARIAN, and NOT a shelter. WTF? His owner should be charged with something.

  9. If Rupert was eating and not gaining weight why didn’t the fuckers bring him to the vets! Unbelievable! They paid the money to adopt him, but, the responsibilities of owning him stopped after he became sick? Such asshole owners!!!!

  10. There is nothing wrong with Rupert, the people who adopted him starved him and who knows what else! Its dumb luck Rupert found his way back to this wonderful rescue! I have said ot time and time again the person who is looking to adopt must be put thru a very rigorous approval process, but those living in the house must also be looked at! Surprise visits must be made periodically to make sure pet and family are getting along right! This is the only way to prevent such things!

  11. This is HORRIBLE. I hope you are planning on putti g those so called owners i Prison. They dont even deserve to be fed. Poor baby.

  12. Poor sweet beautiful dog. He’s beautiful. No doubt owner is not underweight. People can be mean but we are all human, but this is not humane or being human. This is a deliberate action to starve and take pleasure in making him suffer, no doubt they tortured him while they ate, most likely teased him with food, but not giving a bite, obviously. MAY THEY FEEL PAIN ONE DAY. And they will look back and wish they had never hurt a soul.

  13. If the dog was eating and wasting away like this, then did they take him to the vet to find out why? Of course not because they are lying, they starved this poor puppy and they need to be charged for it!

  14. Rescue came across again. This poor innocent was saved thanks to good people. Would hope there be a prosecution.
