A matador with a seemingly aggressive penchant for getting even, returned to the ring to kill the bull who gored him repeatedly in the neck on Saturday. Bullfighter Arturo Macias was seriously injured during a charity event to raise money for the recent earthquake victims in Mexico. The bullfight took place at the Plaza de Toros Monumental de Aguarscalientes.

During the fight, Macias also received two additional injuries and had been carried out of the ring to receive medical treatment. Video later posted online showed Macias returning to the ring and killing the bull.

As the atmosphere and old traditions of bullfighting have been steadily declining, and animal advocates have become more sympathetic to the horrific animal cruelty suffered by the bulls, people online expressed their anger:

“Couldn’t care less about the bull slaughtering coward, all my sympathies is with the bull,” stated one reader as posted by the Independent.

“If they are gonna do these fights it should be to the death for the fighter as well,” stated another observer.

And still a third person expressed her deep anger for the disturbing public display of such animal torture:

“Gruesome moments the bull is tortured to death by a bullfighter and enjoyed by a heartless audience.”

And then Macias continued and killed a second bull in another brutal fight where a different bull never stood  a fair chance. According  to his Facebook page, surgeons were able to repair the damage; Macias will remain in the hospital for the next three or four days.

Not so for the bull … he never stood a chance. He’s dead!

Bullfighting remains a legal sport in Mexico. Some Mexican states have animal protection laws, but the laws do not apply to the protection of bulls. In Mexico, bullfighting has been deemed illegal twice in history, but for now it’s legal. Even children are allowed to witness the bloody and painful spectacles as long as they are accompanied by their parents.

Fortunately bullfighting is decreasing in popularity, and similar to the citizens of Spain, bullfighting is an outdated tradition which has no place in a progressive society.
