A coyote that wandered into the Dat Dog restaurant in New Orleans last weekend wound up being “humanely” euthanized. On Tuesday, Bill DiPaola, President and COO of Dat Dog, released an official statement about the animal’s untimely demise:

“I am deeply saddened and very upset to report that our friend, the coyote that visited us on Frenchmen, was ordered put to sleep by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Dat Dog is an animal-friendly, animal-loving company. We celebrate pets and animals of all kind. When our coyote friend visited our Frenchmen location, we did everything in our power to have it released back into the wild or taken to safety. I am very disappointed to hear that was not the case. In response, we’ll be hosting a donation event at our Freret Street store with the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. It will be centered around legislation, rule-making and habitat conservation so that we can all learn more about the vital role that our wildlife and environment play in our present and future Louisiana. We’ll also continue to support our friends at Zeus’ Place in their animal adoption program.

Coyote put down

The coyote had startled employees when it ran into the establishment as the business was being closed. The animal was eventually corralled in one portion of the building until a trapper arrived to remove him. Dat Dog believed that a wildlife rescue group would be taking the coyote in, but the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries preempted the rescue attempt and the animal was put down on Monday night, reported NOLA.

  1. I’m from New Orleans and I am disgusted. Why did they insist on putting it down. It doesn’t look threatening and couldn’t they have released it back into the wild at least? Just seems there were other options; but our society is so quick to euthanize it’s ridiculous.

  2. Oh come on! What was their reasoning for this? Animals are trapped all the time and taken back to be released into the wild. Poor thing made a mistake and paid the ultimate price! Shame on them!

  3. RIP ,POOR coyote didn’t deserve to die! Should have been left back into the wild! I wished they would STOP THE KILLING OF INNOCENT ANIMALS! THAT COYOTE WAS SEARCHING FOR FOOD! IT’S NOT HIS FAULT THAT THE WOODS ARE GETTING SMALLER WHILE THE HOUSES KEEP GETTING BIGGER! WHERE DO WE EXPECT THEM TO GO???

  4. Believe me, they will come up with a reason shortly. Before you know it, they will post saying the coyote had rabies or recently killed someone’s house pet.

I always say it and will say it again right now.

All the people who work in this type of industry should have to show some type of documentation that proves they have cared for a cat and/or dog for a minimum of at least 5 years. Documentation such as vet bills in their name to show they care for animals. It isn’t foolproof but at least animals will have a 50/50 chance when dealing with them.

They should all have a high school diploma and also a degree in some type of animal welfare.

They should also have at least 3 references with clean records and be aged 25 or older that will sign and vouch for them. Stating that the person is nice to animals and that they have witnessed the person’s friendly behavior towards animals.

They themselves should have a clean record with absolutely no felonies. They should also have to allow their juvenile record to be viewed as well.

They should have to pass a physiological evaluation test before being hired and have to pass another evaluation every 3 to 5 years afterwards.

The person should not be allowed to work the same position for more than 10 years. They should either be demoted or promoted or be made to retire or resign.

LAST Requirement that should be an absolute must do. NO 1 PERSON should have the final say of the outcome of whatever the situation may be dealing with an animal.

This may seem like I am asking a lot from someone who needs and/or wants a job. BUT’ It actually is not much to ask from someone who is being paid by the taxpayer’s in the city/town they are working for. The taxpayer’s are also paying for the rent/mortgage of the facilities the animals are temporarily housed in and the office buildings these workers are working in as well. They are also paying for the vehicles being used for this type of work.

NOTE-REMEMBER: When and if you ever have to deal with an animal control officer, wildlife conservation officer or someone similar to these job functions above. Wouldn’t you like to know the person in front of you is in for the best interest of your animal and/or animals and know he/she does not have final say of the animals situation?

There is a lot of people who get into this type of work simply for the pay/benefits and just because they hate certain animals and/or all animals. NO ONE PERSON SHOULD HAVE THE FINAL SAY OF AN ANIMALS LIFE!

    🙂

    • ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
UPDATE! I sent a FB message to the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries and received this reply:

The coyote is no longer being euthanized and is being sent to LDWF licensed rehabilitation facility.

    • you need to run for a political office shawn. you can make some real changes for animal welfair. in what you are saying you can take money already alotted but misspent and trim agencys and instill the right people in these taxpayer positions. why shouldnt an educated and humain people be placed in the position of what lives what dies and how. You are basically demanding humans , corruptable humans to reconize that animals must be viewed as beings with rights. because we all know here to day that this coyotee was not a danger, nor was rabied, and was not a nusence. that some one just decided he was a danger and that same person who has such a clear predijest and hate for this creature also decided how and why he should be shown no mercy and killed. Inhumainly!
what you are saying in your post is what i and meny people believe,
Animals were supposed to have rights. We need to give rights to animals. Animals are worthy of having rights.
We hold these truths to be self evident that all creathers are created equal:
That they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights,
that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuite of hapiness. I believe you are the guy

  5. I agree that the animal trappers and the people responsible for this travesty at the LA Wildlife and Fisheries are heartless and cruel, and I also hope they all are punished somehow for their inhumanity! Did not one of you speak up for this beautiful, scared creature? Furthermore, I cannot believe a woman, that looks like a nice person, could be so heartless. Shame on all of you. If I were your mother, I would be so ashamed that a child of mine could be so incapable of empathy. I hope Karma comes back around for you all. If your lives start going badly, remember all the ill will you have created and know that you deserve it.

What a beautiful creature – there was no reason it could not have been driven to a remote area and re-released into the wild. Is there something we can do at this point to keep this from happening again?

      • I’m confused it says above in the article that the coyote was “humanely euthanized”. Also when I clicked on the address you provided it……page not found. I don’t know who to believe the author or the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife.

      • Penny, My gut reaction was he was killed and quickly and with out mercy. The game warden brags about killing 200 coyotees so why would he have not treated the cyotee with the same distain.
all you have to do is see the brutality of the trapper susan, who he trained you will see cruelty and know they lead a group of people chosen spacifically to see thiese creaturs as nothing but desease and Nusance. And they all do unspeacable things to these animals before they brutally INHUMAINLY butcher them, On sight as he says. This is a mind set by an elected official that presides over the unbridaled Breed spacific Brutality to a living creature in their realm.
So what are we going to do about it.
        Im Pissed!

      • Ellen..They lied to Kathryn. Such a shame you can’t trust what they say. I would have preferred the truth through their own mouth’s.

      • Linda,
I feel so sorry for Dat Dog.
        Because he didnt deserve it.

You would have thought a bunch of local restaurant knuckel heads could have kept their heads together and cut a poor dog a break and help him get out. But Noooo They had too much fun yelling and screaming and banging metal spoons on pot lids and locking him in a room and waiting for him to be snared and draged away .to his terriffying death

Now to decive and confuse and of corse the restaurant owner hinting at large sums of money to wildlife, bla blh blaaah. The whole thing makes me sick to my guts. This place .
You would Think New Orleans Would be a little more tolarant to one of Gods creatures.

    • How very nice of the discusting trapper susan, dragging a frightened young coyote by its neck by a stick with a rope.
dragging it violently as she stops to pose with the frghtened animal as she poses for her victory pic.. Smiling,….
no learing with victory removing such a dangerious animal.
Wait you mean this poor scared coyotee cowering in fear in the corner of the room? you called the kill police on that poor creature?
Then humainly put down ? Why?
Humainly euthanised!? dragged by its neck thrown in a cage almost breaking its neck?! By fat ass , hates animals, wild animals treated worse then rats, trapper fat ass susan?
dosnt look very humaine to me. You mean humainly euthanised!? as a favor to the scared coyotee?
I think i will be calling Dat Dog, CEO Mr Bill Dipalo Maybe he can explain what humainly euthinised means.
And why this looks like such a fail on the part of his restaurant and its stupid heartless employees.
      Solution,
Open the friggin door turn out the lights give him a chance to get the hell out of there before fat ass inhumain trapper susan drags him to his painful, INHUMAIN !!!!!! , Death by Gas chamber.
      Humainly euthinised!? Indeed.

    • the animal in the pic. is begging for mercy and fat ass fancy boots is still using a heavy hand.as it is now going to be humainly euthinised, By gas chamber. first uncontrolable urination than gas then heart racing and gasping for air, then vomiting, then convulsion than coma then death about 20-30 mins of fear, pain and torcher.what is the humain part?
This is what the NAZIS used to gas jews and sympathisers during world war2,
      Humain my ass.
      WHY!?

      • Such a horrific way to die. Could we build gas chambers for animal abusers? Shame on me for making such a remark.

  6. Why the F was he euthanized? He didn’t appear to be too used to humans and not able to re-acclimate to the wild. RIP little fox. I’m sorry your life was cut short by some imbeciles.

  7. this is the saddest thing ever that instead of releasing it back they put him to sleep and they say humanely??? the animal was probably starved and that’s why he came to us? They should have fed the poor thing instead of killing it???!!! the way humans treat animals or wildlife and the planet Earth or whatever is left of it is appalling and so so sad!!! I don’t even know why we’re called humans when we Act more like animals everyday towards each other or other beings..??

  8. Well, I don’t know if I even believe Wildlife and Fisheries. I thought they said he was ALREADY put down. Now, due to animal activist complaints, they are saving him. I don’t know if I trust them now.

  9. From the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Facebook site:

“The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is charged with the responsibility of managing and protecting Louisiana’s abundant natural resources.”

That’s SOME protection, that is… arrogant bureaucrats!

Can’t WAIT to witness the decimation of the EPA, USDA, Department of Education, etc… when Bannon/tRump’s GOP-approved nominees begin to dismantle ALL those hard-won protections that shield us from the avaricious ambitions of the billionaire-buffoonery-autocracy that presently inhabits the White House…

Rest-in-peace, precious coyote: You obviously came to the wrong place, if you were seeking “humane” help from “humanity”….
