Leave it to the animal loving women of Drake University’s Rowing Team in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday morning who had been practicing on the Des Moines River when they spotted a pair of pit bulls running in the bushes nearby. Suddenly the dogs ran out onto the thin ice and broke through; falling into the freezing water.Drake University rowing team 2

That’s when the rowers took action. According to WhoTv, the team members were able to help the dogs to safety, and the women were prepared to jump in and render aid if needed. Once the dogs were out of the water, the women wrapped the shivering pooches in towels and temporarily brought them into the boathouse to warm them up. Next they contacted the Animal Rescue League.

Both dogs had microchips, but the listed phone numbers had been disconnected. Fortunately however, the Animal Rescue League has been able to find their families. On Sunday morning, the ARL posted the good news on their Facebook page:

“Huge kudos to the Drake University women’s rowing team for their quick thinking yesterday in saving 2 dogs after they fell through the ice on the Des Moines River. Thanks to them, the dogs are safe at the ARL, and we’re happy to say that we have been able to identify their owner!”drake university rowing team 3
