An abandoned dog, left to die after someone tied her to a tree in a remote area of Pitt County, North Carolina, was found by two children who heard her cries. According to WITN News, the kids, ages 10 and 14, heard whining on Sunday night and they went to investigate.

The curious children made their way through tall weeds and over a brook before finding the young dog, near death, tethered to a tree without any access to food. The dog, dubbed “Tanzie,” is skin and bones – she weighs a mere 28 pounds and a veterinarian who examined her believes that she was without food for upwards of two months.

Pitt County Animal Services has acknowledged the kids who took the time to investigate likely saved this starved dog’s life.

Tanzie is being fostered by Jennifer Matterly, with Friends of the Pitt County Animal Shelter. Tanzie has a long road to recovery, but she is finally receiving the care that she so desperately needed.

OMG! This breaks my heart into a million pieces! Starvation is such a slow, painful torturous way to die! And there are so,so,so many dogs in this country that are suppose to be pets that are intentionally tortured in this way! It TRUELY enrageous me,to the point that I want to exterminate the monster responsible for inflicting this horror upon a innocent, helpless animal! PLEASE,PLEASE GET WELL SOON BEAUTIFUL TANZIE❤️ THANK U GOD FOR THE CHILDREN WHO FOUND AND RESCUED THIS ADORABLE DOG NAMED TANZIE❤️

Tanzie was saved by 2 of the most wonderful young people with a brain. Those two wonderful young people have ethics and compassion. They will go far and be blessed. Tanzie is going to be fine and she too will be blessed. Abandoned dogs always are so grateful to those that care. Hugs to all three of them.
