Even in the middle of the summer; even with multiple news articles and television news stations reporting the news of dogs left in hot cars barely surviving and dying, pet owners continue to leave their best friends in parked cars with no air conditioning. This time a Chihuahua was rescued out of a hot car parked near the zoo.  How is it that people who claim to love their dogs so much continue with this alarming and dangerous behaviors?

On Tuesday came the scary story out of St. Louis, Missouri where a Chihuahua had to be rescued from a blue Ford Explorer after the dog in distress had been spotted by two girls. The vehicle had been parked near the St. Louis Zoo, and the girls notified a zoo official about the worrisome situation. Even though the windows were cracked a few inches, the temperature inside the car registered 132 degrees. When the Humane Society of Missouri arrived, a shelter representative broke one of the windows to free the Chihuahua, named Molly.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Molly was taken to the Humane Society, where she was examined by a veterinarian. Initially her body temperature had been very high, but there was no permanent damage. That afternoon Molly’s owner, who has not been identified to the public, arrived at the Humane Society to pick up their dog.  Because rescuers retrieved the dog before she was seriously hurt, no charges will be filed against the owner.

Maybe something more than a slap on the wrist when pets have to be rescued from hot cars would be a more effective deterrent?

  1. Actually the window was not broken free as the article indicates.. Why won’t the owner be charged for animal neglect. Laws must be different in Missouri. They need to change it.

  2. Why, why, why, are these animals given back to the people that have no brains in the first place with no consequences to the owner? They should receive at least a fine if they want their dog back but then again, they might not pay the fine because they don’t want their dog back and then more dogs would end up in the shelter system. I don’t know what the answer is, they probably think it won’t happen to me! Just sad!

  3. This is NOT right. The dog didn’t die so don’t charge this POS owner and give the dog back? They need to be taught a lesson somehow and how is this doing it? The heat in the car was 132, the dog WAS in distress and had to be taken to a Vet, don’t tell me these morons should get away with this without any consequences!

  4. Have any of these moron pet owners ever been in a closed car with just an inch or two crack in the window and see how really hot it gets inside where they can’t even breathe? That should be the initial punishment for this pet owner and for every pet owner who leaves their dog in their hot car.Unfortunately, no charges will be brought against this idiot owner because the dog is alive. By then it is too late for that pet. .Guess a pet has to die before any criminal charges are filed. Those laws should be changed now before any more pets die a horrible death in a car.

  5. With the continued lack of consequences for this and all cruel abuse of animals it will NEVER stop or improve! What is so hard about punishing people who break the law? Because it’s animals involved? Why in the hell do we even have animal cruelty laws if there are not going to be punishment? These are living creature not inanimated objects! Oh wait it’s because the citations(when given) generate money for the courts, guess it’s really not about doing right by the animals and giving a decent punishment as a deterrent! This dog should of NOT giving back!! SMH

  6. I can’t believe that they gave that poor dog back to its owner!!!! She needs to be charged with this or she will continue to do it!!!

  7. This “so called owner” should have been written a SERIOUS citation…. maybe they would figure taking their pets out to look them up in the heat is not such a great idea. When will the cities STOP slapping their hands and make them pay?!?!?!

  8. i LOVE MY DOG. I would never take her to the corner store in this heat. Where are your brains? You must be sitting on it.

  9. So this so called ‘owner’ was given the dog back so they can do it again – they learned NOTHING because NOTHING was done – apparently Missouri authorities have the brains of a rock – because the dog lived it was OK – I cannot believe the lack of humanity in some states.

  10. And why didn’t the animal aid people give that baby some water and give it a chance to go to the bathroom…..dag the poor pup went straight from hot car to shelter truck…..and who goes to a zoo, knowing you are gonna be there a long time & leave your pup in the hot car….not even a crack in the widow….I wouldn’t have tried to save their window….I would have busted it out.
